The collective proposal of artists Amélie Weirich and Federico Fierro wants in this exhibition
illustrate the constant ambiguity of a feeling of emptiness and loss of respect of overproduction
and information overload in our contemporary postindustrial and globalized world. This form of
computer “loneliness” or of “stacking” of chaos in the minds of new generations of consumers/
observers, seems to be consolidated by a saturation of sources, brands, products, images
and words where at the end remains only one and immaculate plate image without singularities.
The reality of this screen which allows us to explore our contemporary world looks like a
juxtaposition of images until the infinite. The trail through the streets of any cosmopolitan citiy,
crowded advertising, digital screens, techno-logical gadgets, distinct possibilities and forms
of happiness, leaves an impression of emptiness or dirt on the understanding of this reality.
There are so much, that there is lacking. The proposals paintings and photographs of this
exhibition pressentent a kind of reflective mirror of saturated gaze of image manufacturers in
the current era. The images are here saturations or piles. As in photography too much light or
exposure time “bleache” a picture, an excess of images, sources and even art itself, produces
unreadability. “All that” what our world is become this discursive “anything”, this vacuum which
is the enjoyment of future generations. These chaotic saturations replace the clear, defined,
dense and understandable shapes. The contradiction and paradox are the desire of an art
which replaces the aesthetic “readable” by dusty ghosts.
Lack / saturation
The paradox “all / nothing” is perfectly well enrol in the digital and photographic Amélie Weirich’s
work.
Amélie Weirich construct forms of “saturation”, of default presences, of absences. Whether
produced by light, the words, sound or time, these art forms remind us deletions, vague ghosts,
or even suggestions or other more dense visual universes. In the Description de la chambre
de Guillaume (Guillaume’s room description) the research of the capture of a descriptive and
objective “all” leads to the creation of a insatiable lack, who is also the raison of this research.
Fill-empty-fill, create-destroy-create, here are the paradoxes which generate the need. The
following work, the Minime Minimum et L’Imminimisable Minime Minimum, offers screenshots
which bring us back to the visual univers of computer software Microsoft Word. In the Zapping
series, the vague, saturated and vertiginous phenomenon s’allége of television mix creating
ghosts of liquid crystals, a bit like Baconien’s characters, portraits of anti-humans assaulted
by the televised “noise”.
If Amélie seeks to dissolve the images that she produces such as those offered by the world
community, they continue to intrude into the intimate and tactile universe taking the shape
of Crèmes de mots (creams or words) of Spams. At the same time, the organic and intimate
universe blow up into constellations of coloured Petits Bonbons (small candy), like skins of
scented chewing gum, “tattooed” by the epidermal wear-out.
9
Painting is like sweeping
As he used to call them, the ramassages de légèretés (pickups of lightness) of Federico
Fierro are paintings and two-dimensional images which are formed by piles. Its pictorial forms
are “pickups” of these light elements spreaded out in the domestic and intimate universe,
which are the product of usure of things that inhabit it. Dust, hair or ashes seem to order, to
reconfigure on the canvas, on paper or on the walls, creating aesthetical forms or ornaments.
The painting by Federico Fierro feeds with a distant banal, with an emotional and critic relationship
with the matter of things in the home concept. Works where the artist retains preciously
dust bunnies providing them false scientific names, or boxes to keep immaculate stringent
drawings of dust or hair from the the last cut, are some examples.
His Colombian origins learned him to think tangible things, manufacture or land, however,
his work develop an ambiguous and critical arrangement using aesthetic forms that recall the
ubiquity of graphic design or contemporary western popular culture. The poetic weight on
using dust takes us in paradoxically “clean” spaces, ordered by a entropique breath : the time.
The world of home decoration, of design, of the cultural “beauty” is a network of infinite possibilities,
a huge market of “beautiful things” to consume at home. A form of chaos of beauty.
Federico Fierro is proposing us a “cleansing”, a brush stroke that does not even despise dust.
The dust of itself, of home and even of the exhibition.
Enregistrement / Recording
F. - Much of ours works (created as a collaboration of a groupe of artists) is designed as a
dialogue inside the intimate space which explores and questions the various aspects of the
relationship, not just inside the couple but also of men and women concerned by the contemporary
leisure society.
A. - These are comments about sexuality, about the woman-object place, about vanity, about
the domestic space. They are formed as the record (photographic, plastic, sound, etc.) of our
daily actions staged. As a theatricality of the emotional and relational behaviour.
F. - Although in all works, we are the protagonists, we are not the object.
A. - Yes, but the works are constructed primarily with our bodies. The separate use of our
hair, the recurring presentation of diptych works, but also the fact that we are not represented
together, suggest the aspects of our differences (of origin, gender).
F. - And our resemblances. The dust drawings on the one hand, are the link between the
geography of men and women and the domestic space, and on the other hand, they are the
evidence of household and the time passage. So they become representations of vanity. The
constant research of pleasure, the eternal adolescence, the saturation of leisure bids, the
banality, the stupidity and the childishness blend themselves in a kind of artistic couple game,
which shows our vulnerability in front of the others, “the all-power” of the commercial contemporary
image and the fun and entertainment society.
___, It, there.
- What is this thing? What is it?
- “It” is a “dust - text”.
I wanted to start this introduction by this messy and seemingly chaotic text, built from rubbles
- graphics, poetic and conceptual fragments - which arise from the study of the dust that I will
try to develop here as a new reconfiguration, an objectification of my artistic thought. I suggest
building this “dust - text” in the same way as I make my artworks, following a kind of “atomist
method” or “dusty method” that reorders and reconstitute the rubbles, the fragments, the particles,
the “dusts” of my personal universe, searching an authenticity of the situation of thing
of things and the artpiece as a thing. Like a research of mixture and reconstruction of a “dust”
whole : the logic of dust or the logic of my practice.
But what is exactly this logic of dust? I look closely this dust piled up everywhere in my room
and first I notice that it is formed by an indefinite number of particles of myself and the things
that inhabit this home area. It is therefore a gray, light and disordered unity of dead cells, of
residues of matter, of elementary particles from an ordered, visible and weighty “whole”. The
dust has its own logic. It is the dismemberment of the matter, the displacement, isolation and
reconstitution of the seemingly immutable elements of visible things. Its lightness it’s also the
detachement from weight of things.
In pre-socratic materialism the ancient atomist philosophers explained the construction
of all things, “the intuition of the essential” (as Jean Salem said in his introduction about
atomist), 1 as a composition of elementary bricks, atoms or atomets, or as in modern quantum
physics, a composition of quarks and bosons. Democritus even called the atoms ideas (ideai),
paradoxically close to the Platonic thought, he imagined the universe as “a whirlwind of all
sorts of ideas”. 2 Democritus and his students also illustrated the idea of the world as a kind of
atomist alphabet : They conjectured that the relations between the composed corps (things)
differentiate between them by the constitution of the atoms that build them, “by the shape (as
N
the letter A is different from the letter N), by the order (as NA from NA) and position (as from
N)”. 3
It is interesting to think the world with the example of Democritus, with this infinite alphabet of
particles. Granulated particles that as dust reconstitute perpetually themselves helped by time,
helped by this “entropy breath” to make the world. This “cosmos” which gives the existence to
things. A sort of “dusty alphabet” which compose a tragedy, a comedy or a picture - like pixels
or html codes on the “contemporary language” of the image -. A sort of “atomist alphabet”
which builds the dust bunny of everything.
37
38
Marcel Duchamp was one of the artists interested in this idea of “atomist” and “dusty” construction
of the world and art. In his collection notes book, Duchamp show us an amount of
poetic and ridiculous examples of what he calls the infra-thin: “A ray of light (sun) reduced
to infra-thin [...] Smoke or another gas sliced [is] infra-thin” or “the warmth of a seat that has
been left is infra-thin”. 4 Duchamp sees in the infra-thin the tiny part of reality recovered from
all of the concrete real circumstances. He designed some of his artworks as very thin “slices”
of reality. The “Essential situations of possible”, 5 of the elementary light parties of all things.
The famous Duchamp’s Large glass could be a “slice” of the world, a two-dimensional particle
of reality trapped between two glasses where the piled dust was “caught” and after “fixed” on
photography by Man Ray on his also famous Dust Breeding.
The dust is then the “chaotic” light thing, made itself from particles of “cosmic” heavier things.
But what are the relations that we have with these things? What is the relevance of these
things in our everyday context? The relations between men and things follows the “atomist”
logic of the dust phenomenon, of chaos and entropy: “all come from dust, and to dust all
return”. 6 tell us the sacred texts. We all constantly become dust and in this state we mix with
things, with the dust of things and with the dust of the other.
My practice has long time interested in the domestic space, in the mundane, in the banal, in
all the relationships with those things that are familiar to us, in the thing of painting, the thing
of dust, the thing of things. But I note that in a post-industrial world this relation “man-thing”
(in a sensitive, banal, intimate, utilitarian, ornamental, intellectual or aesthetic relation way)
appears to be well understood, measured and controlled by traders, creators and consumers
of all kinds of industrial products. We seem to live an era of “objectification” and in the same
time “standardization” of all these relations. This standardization extends it self as an infinite
surface without singularities, penetrating and piling up in the intimate space, both domestic
(lieu) and informatics (non-lieu). These beautiful things are everywhere, such as dust, or like
Yves Michaux said: such as steam “covering everything as a mist”. 7
As an artist, sensible to relations between men and things, I find myself faced with the standardization
of the thing and its aesthetic value. Although in the contemporary “immaterial” art
scene this standardization is less obvious, it is not less relevant. The Georges Perec’s novel,
The things, talk to us about a materialistic situation in the hedonistic existence of men in the
seventys. In this novel the scrolling of concepts of desire and human existentialism objectification
- in the history he listed rigorously all the “things” inhabiting the domestic space - continues
to be highly contemporary. 8 Then, in a well after essay he invites us to question these things,
to reflect, to think about its condition: “to ask the usual [...] the infra-ordinary”. 9
Our artistic contemporarity shows us galleries filled with “situations”, “events” or “experiences”.
Aesthetic strategies, very often intangible and virtual, where the art-thing is replaced
by the experience of any volatil and very precise feeling. The challenges of contemporary art
seem to meet the expectations of the speech of conceptual artists of the seventies. These
artists researching the dematerialization of the art object, Researching an invisible in which
“a blind man could make art”. 10 In a world where the review of power of the thing and its standardization
extends as an infinite surface without singularities, the most contemporary artists
looking for “the pursuit of art in a gaseous state”, are also included in this issue - and without
realizing it - notices Yves Michaux. “[...] Artworks disappear not by steaming and volatilization
ut rather by excess [...] by overproduction”. 11
Art is not a thing in a “objectificated” post-industrial reality. In the contemporary artistic
context the the most widespread artwork dimension is built by its conceptual strength, by its
“maden thing” or “manipulated thing” character. It is more often an artifact or a fiction. Very
seldom the artwork dimension is buit by the strength of his pure state “thing” character. the
dust state. Dust is here, in my room, waiting to be questioned. Dust: this light thing that I try
to pick up in order to understand the relevance of the mundane, to reveal the powers of its
material constitution, the secrets behind the things which made it. Speaking about the Claudio
Parmiggiani’s work - another artist to have treated the problem of dust - Didi-Huberman says:
“Dust allows to think the world”, 12 I will ask the dust to seek a way to think art, think the thing
and think the banal.
In her reflections on the “extreme” contemporary photography, Dominique Baqué gives a
particular importance to the fiction of banal constructions. “The intimate fictions” as an attempt
to re-enchant the day-to-day, “to transcend the pitiful mediocricy of the ordinary,” without sublime
it, because “that is no longer the issue”. 13 I will not talk about the “debanalization” of the
daily gesture or the restitution of the authenticity of banal, I will try a revaluation, a supremacy
of the status of art as just a thing. One thing that does not weight. A kind of “plastic atomism”
built with the nearest universe of the human condition. His things. His thing. His “it”. His dust.
“[...] I say what the others said to me,
I feel the same things at the same hour
I am the exhaustion of a motionless mirror
Or a museum dust. [...] “ 14
Whatever the medium (painting, installation, photography) or materials (clay, dust, hair, milk
or coffee powder, pigments) that lay out my artistic approach, my art-work is a highly pictorial
research, out of any plastic or conceptual claim. It is the result of a “pilling up” of information built
inside my intimate and domestic universe.
Home, the intimate space seems to become an undefined space, vague, where boundaries
are erased and it is hard to identify where the world starts, where my personal universe stops.
Through the computer screen, TV, I-pod, design, graphics, paper publications, a chaotic flow
of information inexorably fulfill my room, my place, my kitchen, piling and mixing with dust,
with memory and with my body. Naturally, this is only a symbolic image, however I have a well
real feeling of saturation, of semantic disorder, where Mickey Mouse merges with Bataille or
Madonna and the FARC buy IKEA’s chairs at the United Nations. I like to compare the act of
painting with the futile act of sweeping the floor. The act of painting could be the daily act to
represent this disorder, to seek (in vain perhaps) to make sense of this “crowding” of chaotic
information. In order to seek a personal, of course, a subjective sense. Painting do not seek to
“order” or “clean” but rather to illustrate this phenomenon.
I love watching the dust piles on the walls of appliances, on the dining table, rid myself it and
seeing it reappear again. That seems to me replicates the relationship we have with this contemporary
“saturation” of image. My first contacts with painting look like this innocuous experience
of drawing with the fingers on the dusty surfaces.
During these observations, the dust has served as a model to reflect this “domestic crowding”,
this paradox of intimacy. As dust is constituted by debris of things, by debris of ourselves, by
dead cells, dust travels and mixes with other dusts and finish by deposit its entropy at home. At
the same time my paintings want to collect the ordinary, and particularly (as it is intangible) to
give it a shape. I want to offer it a place in the banal as a “plastic thing” with all the ornamental
characteristics well appreciated in the intimate and domestic universe. The social aesthetics
and moral values which attach items to people is not an idea that bothers me, on the contrary, it
places again the painting in the banal and domestic space, removing any aura, any arrogance,
becoming the matter, simply dust.
More of nothing
During the years of art history at the university I was particularly interested in Mediterranean
iconography at the late antiquity. It seems that during a wide period of the fourth century, under
a very rich influence of sources (early Christian, pagan, barbaric, roman sources, etc...), the
images are in someway blurred of sense and form, until they lose their primary utility (conveying
magical, historical or religious intentions) to become a complex and meaningless ornament.
It is relatively widespread that that epoch was full of greats semantics saturations which
partly prevents us saturation the interpretation of these images.
I think to conseive our contemporary western iconography as a historic replica of this semantics
and formal saturation. Today as in the late antiquity our visual structures contain that relationship
saturation/vacuum which seem to illustrate a chaotic evolution of language, changing
the meaning of these structures that finaly build our language and our univers.
In my early works at the Fine-Arts school, influenced by the conceptually legacy, I sought to
build forms of visual or audio saturation, forms of absence or vacuum built by this overloading.
I produced texts, which by their overwhelming extension, became images. Some of these
images represented gray and empty monochromes while some others could be as abstract
paintings. Meanwhile, I made an important series of overexposed photographs which, by saturation
(light in this case), made white and illegible images.
No matter what they are made of (words, light, sound, time) these forms remind deletions.
In the Guillaume’s apartment description artpiece (which is actually the written description of
a friend’s room with all the elements that composed it), the saturation of words in search of
an objectif narrative whole leads to a visual and semantic lack creation which is the purpose
of this research. At the same period, my overexposed photographs based on the same paradoxes.
