YADONG GUAN - BIOGRAPHIE
L’élégante virtuose Yadong Guan révèle les sonorités exotiques du pipa chinois.
Originaire de Beijing, Yadong Guan est une véritable ambassadrice musicale qui maîtrise le pipa
à la perfection, cet instrument traditionnel chinois ayant plus de 2000 ans d’histoire et qui est
certes l’un des trésors les plus méconnus du pays du Milieu. Maniant en authentique virtuose cet
instrument aux cordes de métal et de nylon, Yadong Guan offre au public une expérience
musicale pour le moins exotique. Tous les spectateurs ayant eu l’inestimable chance de
l’entendre ont été subjugués par les sonorités du pipa, tantôt délicates, tantôt puissantes, sans
parler de la profonde sensibilité émanant de cette diablesse à la crinière noire.
Depuis 1997, année de son arrivée au Canada (elle réside maintenant à Ottawa), celle qui a fait
ses classes pendant sept ans auprès du maître Lin Shi Cheng attise la curiosité et l’admiration,
se présentant en récital solo, au sein de petits ensembles divers ou en tant que soliste avec
orchestre (notamment pour interpréter Les petites sœurs héroïnes de Mongolie, œuvre pour pipa
et orchestre). En plus d’offrir différents concerts consacrés à la musique traditionnelle chinoise,
Yadong Guan a adapté à son instrument une impressionnante variété d’œuvres occidentales,
revisitant entre autres le répertoire classique (Bartók, Debussy, Vivaldi) et… la chanson
québécoise (Gilles Vigneault, Claude Léveillée)!
Douée pour la composition, elle explore également, à travers certaines pièces de son cru, les
subtiles complexités techniques de son instrument. L’élégante virtuose a par ailleurs effectué
plusieurs tournées au Canada (appuyées par le Conseil des arts du Canada), et ses
éblouissantes interprétations ont été immortalisées sur deux enregistrements. Enfin, notons que
sa contribution exceptionnelle au rayonnement de la culture chinoise lui a valu de prestigieux
honneurs, dont un grand prix ministériel remis lors de la Conférence mondiale des femmes de
l’ONU, en 1995, de même que le titre de « Miss » de la capitale, accordé par l’Association des
femmes de Beijing et par la télévision de Beijing, en 1993. Plus récemment au Festival du film de
Moncton 2010, elle s’est vu remettre le prix « The best original scores » pour la musique du film
« They killed my cat», ainsi que le prix « Outstanding artist 2010 » remis par le Toronto Fairchild
TV and Talentvision TV.
Si l’aspect plutôt inusité de son instrument suscite la fascination du grand public, Yadong Guan
souhaiterait ardemment que le pipa jouisse un jour de la même popularité que la guitare. À votre

LE PIPA
Mentionné dans des textes chinois remontant à plus de 2000 ans, le pipa s’avère l’un des plus
anciens instruments encore en usage de nos jours. Pendant la dynastie Tang, de 618 à 907 de
notre ère, le pipa est devenu l’instrument le plus apprécié en Chine. Depuis, sa popularité n’a
jamais diminué au cours des siècles, son répertoire et sa technique se transmettant et se
développant de génération en génération.
Monté de quatre cordes métalliques, le pipa moderne bénéficie d’un registre de plus de trois
octaves grâce à ses trente frettes disposées jusqu’au milieu de sa caisse de résonnance. Sauf en
ce qui concerne l’utilisation des cinq doigts de la main droite auxquels on fixe des ongles
artificiels à l’occasion de chaque prestation, le pipa partage avec la guitare classique certaines
techniques de jeu comme le trémolo et les arpèges, tandis que sa silhouette en forme de poire
évoque le luth européen.
De nombreuses années de formation et de pratique sont nécessaires à l’artiste voulant exploiter
le mieux possible toutes les ressources expressives de l’instrument, tant à cause des exigences
techniques qu’il impose que des multiples subtilités que comporte l’interprétation de son
répertoire.

Jamais de ma vie je n’avais entendu le pipa, cet instrument plus sensible que la harpe,
certainement aussi apaisant que le violoncelle et dont les cordes sont plus sonores que celles de
la guitare. Si j’avais connu cet instrument auparavant, j’aurais appris à en jouer. Il est
magnifique. […] Guan effectuait adroitement et simultanément les changements de timbre, de
hauteur, de volume et de ton. Son toucher et les textures qu’elle créaient lui permettaient de

LA CHINE ÉMERVEILLE NOTRE NATURE; FESTIVAL CLASSIQUE DES HAUTES-
LAURENTIDES
Le 8 août dernier, au cap Lafontaine à Ferme-Neuve, le paysage sonore qui s’est déployé sous
les yeux des amoureux de la nature leur a laissé un magnifique souvenir coloré par des pièces
musicales traditionnelles et classiques de la Chine. Dans l’ambiance conviviale d’une dégustation
chinoise en plein-air, Yadong Guan et Sandie Yip ont fait corps avec le pipa et la cithare zheng
pour le plus grand plaisir des mélomanes de cette magnifique journée.
Devant le splendide panorama flanqué de cette majestueuse Montagne du Diable, Yadong Guan
et Sandie Yip, parées de leurs costumes traditionnels, accordent le pipa et le guzheng. Yadong
Guan et Sandie Yip ont fait don de leur incomparable virtuosité. Transporté dans l’exotisme du
paysage musical, le public s’est laissé distraire par la fraîcheur des effets sonores rimant avec
une brise légère de saison. Architecture de silences, de nuances subtiles dessinées par la
dextérité des doigts. Là où la nature se contemple dans les rimes d’un poème cantonnais, au
cœur d’un folklore ou d’un air classique de ces lointains, nous pouvions voir cette chère
montagne du Diable se travestir au gré de notre plus vaste imagination. Le pipa et le guzheng de
Yadong Guan et de Sandie Yip séduisent jusqu’à l’euphorie. Comblé par l’authenticité de la mise
en scène, on revient de ce festin riche en légèreté.

« Le samedi 21 mars 2009, l’Orillia Concert Association a présenté le concert de Yadong Guan
au pipa, accompagnée de Peter Rapson au violoncelle et de Gerry Elliott à la guitare. LE
SPECTACLE FUT UN ÉVÉNEMENT MUSICAL EXTRAORDINAIRE. Le pipa, instrument chinois
ancien, était peu ou pas du tout connu de nos membres avant le concert. LA SALLE ÉTAIT
DONC REMPLIE DE PLUS DE 550 SPECTATEURS qui faisaient tous un saut dans l’inconnu.
[…] J’ai constaté l’effet extraordinaire qu’elle avait sur son public à ce moment-là; à mon
soulagement, mais non à ma surprise, elle n’a pas déçu les gens d’Orillia. […] Lorsqu’elle a
chanté et joué une magnifique chanson folklorique chinoise, La lune exprime mon cœur,
beaucoup de personnes ont été émues aux larmes. Je n’ai jamais rien vécu de tel lors d’un
concert. La guitare et le violoncelle accompagnaient le pipa à merveille et apportaient des
contrastes forts efficaces au son dans son ensemble. Les trois instruments possèdent leur son
distinctif et se complétaient parfaitement. Contrairement à beaucoup de nos productions, ce
spectacle n’était pas flamboyant, mais la musique procurait une satisfaction sublime. Pour cette

YADONG GUAN – ÉLÉGANCE ET BEAUTÉ
« Récemment, une des soirées plus exotiques mettait en vedette Yadong Guan, virtuose du pipa
et compositrice renommée originaire de Beijing. Le pipa est un des instruments chinois les plus
anciens qui soit encore joué. Lauréate de plusieurs prix, Yadong Guan a largement exploré le
répertoire occidental pouvant être joué sur cet instrument à quatre cordes. Cette artiste
talentueuse et élégante était accompagnée de deux musiciens eux-mêmes réputés : David
Jacques à la guitare et Christophe Lobel au violoncelle. Le trio offrait ainsi une fusion attrayante
des musiques de l’occident et de l’orient. Le répertoire comprenait plusieurs pièces chinoises
classiques ainsi que des œuvres de compositeurs occidentaux tels que Bartók et Claude
Gagnon. À la fin du concert, les musiciens ont REÇU UNE OVATION DEBOUT BIEN MÉRITÉE

Discover the pipa, discover Yadong Guan: a mesmerizing musical encounter with one of
China’s hidden treasures
Hailing from Beijing, Yadong Guan is a true musical ambassador who brilliantly masters the pipa,
a traditional Chinese instrument that is over 2,000 years old. Handling the metal and nylon-
stringed instrument with impressive virtuosity, Guan uncovers one of her country’s hidden
treasures, offering audiences a truly exotic experience. Those who have been privileged to watch
her perform have been enraptured by her profound artistic sensitivity and by the sounds of the
pipa, which range from delicate and gentle to brisk and powerful.
Since her arrival in Canada in 1997 (she now resides in Ottawa), the pipa virtuoso, who studied
under master Lin Shi Cheng for seven years, has been sparking much curiosity and admiration,
whether she presents herself in solo recitals, as a soloist with orchestras (performing works such
as Little Sisters of the Grassland, a piece composed for pipa and orchestra) or with various small
ensembles. In addition to giving concerts dedicated to traditional Chinese music, Yadong Guan
has adapted a wide variety of Western music to her instrument, from classical works (Bartók,
Debussy, Vivaldi) to selections from the Quebec song repertoire (Gilles Vigneault, Claude
Léveillée).
A gifted composer, Yadong Guan also explores the many technical subtleties of her instrument
through her own works. Moreover, the elegant virtuoso has toured Canada on several occasions
(with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts), and her brilliant playing is immortalized on
two recordings. What’s more, her exceptional contribution to the development of Chinese culture
has won her several prestigious accolades, including a ministerial prize, awarded at the UN World
Women’s Conference in 1995, and in 1993, she was elected “Miss Capital” by the Women’s
Association of Beijing and by the television of Beijing. At the Moncton Film Festival 2010 she
recently received the award of « The best original scores » for the music of the movie « They
killed my cat », and also received the award « Outstanding artist 2010 » given by the Toronto
Fairchild TV and Talentvision TV.
Although the uncommon aspect of her instrument arouses the fascination of the general public,
Yadong Guan sincerely wishes the pipa could one day enjoy the same popularity as the guitar.

A BOUT PIPA
Mentioned in Chinese passages which date back to over more than 2000 years, the pipa is one of
the most ancient instruments still played in present times. During the Tang dynasty, between 618
to 907 A.D., pipa became the most appreciated instrument in China. Since then, its popularity has
never decreased over the centuries, while its repertoire and technique have been transmitted and
developed from generation to generation.
Stringed with four metal strings, the modern pipa benefits from a range of more than three
octaves due to its thirty frets, which are placed up to the center of it resonance chamber. Except
when using five fingers on which artificial nails are placed for each performance, pipa shares
some play techniques with classic guitar such as tremolo and arpeggios while its pear shape
recalls the European lute.
Many years of training and practice are essential for the artist who wants to make the most of all
the expressive resources this instrument offers. This is so because of its imposed technical
requirements as well as the multiple subtleties that interpreting its repertoire represent.

THE WONDERS OF CHINA ENHANCE OUR NATURAL LANDSCAPE; FESTIVAL

On August 8 th , nature lovers were delighted by the colourful musical landscape that unfolded at
Cap Lafontaine, in Ferme-Neuve. In the welcoming atmosphere of an open-air Chinese tasting,
Yadong Guan and Sandie Yip fused with their instruments—the pipa and gu-zheng—offering
music lovers a performance of traditional and classical Chinese pieces. A rare treat on a
magnificent day.
Donning traditional Chinese costumes, the duo performed before the splendid panorama of the
majestic Montagne du Diable and showcased their unparalleled virtuosity. The audience was
carried away to an exotic musical landscape, distracted by sounds as refreshing as a light
seasonal breeze. An architecture of rests and subtle nuances shaped by the artists’ skilled
fingers. When nature may be contemplated through the verses of a Cantonese poem or through
exotic folklore, the mighty Montagne du Diable may transform itself at the whim of the spectator’s
limitless imagination. The sounds of Yadong Guan and Sandie Yip’s instruments brought the
audience to a state of euphoria. With its authentic staging, the event proved to be an uplifting
feast.

«One of the more exotic evenings recently featured the distinguished Pipa virtuoso and
composer, Yadong Guan, originally from Beijing. The Pipa, a four-stringed traditional Chinese
instrument is one of the oldest instruments still in use and this award winning player has done
much to explore the occidental repertoire that can be played on this instrument. This gifted and
elegant player was accompanied by two renowned musicians in their own right - David Jacques

«The Orillia Concert Association presented Yadong Guan, pipa, accompanied by Peter Rapson,
cello and Gerry Elliott, guitar on Saturday, March 21 st 2009. It proved to be an extraordinary
musical event.Few, if any of our subscribers had ever heard of this ancient Chinese instrument
called the pipa. Therefore it was a leap of faith for the 550 + people who came to the Orillia Opera
House not knowing what they were going to experience. […] I witnessed the amazing effect that
she had on her audience then and to my relief but not surprise she did not disappoint the
audience in Orillia. […] When she sang and played a lovely Chinese folk song, "The moon
expresses my heart" many people were moved to tears. I have never witnessed this in a concert
before. The use of guitar and cello to accompany the pipa was an excellent addition and brought
some valuable contrast to the overall sound. All three instruments have their own unique sound
and these complimented each other perfectly.
The program was not flashy as so many of our programs tend to be now. Rather it was sublimely
satisfying from a musical point of view and for this reason I have had far more positive feedback
than I can remember for any other concert that we have presented. They positively loved it! »
