4 ... CMAG _ AVRIL/APRIL 2011
A
CROSSING SWORDS
A spectacular feature on the Citroën
expressed in the shark’s fi n on the
Citroën DS3 then in the sword-shaped
side moulding on the Citroën DS4.
distinction. À se distinguer, autant
qu’à être distingué.
After the DS3 and the DS4, the revelation of
the Citroën DS5 heralds a major stage in the
development of the DS line. While it eschews
the codes of the GT to return to the
quintessence of automotive desire, the Citroën
DS5 represents a full fl owering, and an even
more radical affi rmation of the spirit of the DS
6 ... CMAG _ AVRIL/APRIL 2011
AN INVITATION TO TRAVEL
Inspired by the aerospace industry, the interior of the Citroën
DS5 features an original roof in three parts – three light wells –
just like an aircraft cockpit. The main controls are grouped
centrally, with one low console and another console near the
roof. Like in an aircraft, the controls rely on pushbuttons, knobs
and toggle switches. When the driver gets into the car, an LED
function gradually lights up the cabin. The driver can then push
the hands-free start-up button to start the show: the ambient
lighting is interspersed with red and white, the digital pads and
instrument cluster needle come to life, and the head-up display
appears in the driver’s fi eld of vision. You’re ready to move.

ÉVÉNEMENT EVENT
10 ... CMAG _ AVRIL/APRIL 2011
With its rectangular cut-out at the summit, the Shanghai
World Financial Center looks rather like a giant bottle opener. Standing
almost 500 metres high, its bevelled form has become part of the Shanghai
skyline since its inauguration in 2008. Today, it is one of the symbols of
China’s economic power. This was where, on 18 April, Citroën set up a temporary
structure to host one of the two White Pearl Citroën DS5s, unveiled
for the fi rst time in China. The other vehicle was on the Marque’s stand in
the aisles of the Shanghai Motor Show. The Citroën DS5 too is quite a
performer in terms of architecture. Particularly with reference to the sword
design, which sums up the spirit of this car. Extending from the front window
to the tip of the headlamp, the sword of the Citroën DS5 is a jewel of
design. A talisman. It is the stamp of a car of sophisticated elegance, taut
and fl owing, with clean lines that loosen or tense depending on the angle.
The sculpted fl anks play on shadow and light. A provocative expression
completes a form that verges on hypnosis, all the way to the shooting
brake-style rear. The strong, unique personality of the Citroën DS5 is also
refl ected in its cabin, which is a continuation of the vehicle’s exterior cabin.
Focused on the driver, the cockpit combines the driving position of a coupé
with grand touring design: a vertical steering wheel with a wide fl at section,
a raised fl oor and wide central console, with the gear controls positioned as
a natural extension of the driver’s forearm. Inside and out, the Citroën DS5
is a unique creation, with that “ je ne sais quoi” that can summon the
higher power of the imagination. The power from which children’s dreams
are woven. A kind of magic that defi nes French excellence. An expertise in
luxury, which invests embodied objects with senses and emotion. A particular
awareness of the power that circulates in living beings. Surprise,
excitement, attraction: it is this interplay of reminiscence and suggestion that
is consecrated in the Citroën DS5.
For its world preview in Shanghai, the Citroën DS5 was presented in
an exceptional livery. In pearlescent silver with chrome detailing, treated in
shades of grey or lacquered in black. The DS5 White Pearl has a burning
intensity. A spellbinding power. On its sword, the hand-carved mark of the
DS melts away as the hilt tapers into the blade, revealing the chrome of the
blade. Like the sap that fl ows under the bark, the mark of the DS is also
visible on the central sections of the DS5 White Pearl, which have been
handworked to resemble watchbands. The ebony full-grain leather upholstery
on the seats, pillars and dashboard creates a soft, dark interior, as
plush and inviting as a lounge room. The leather seats are fi nished like
luxury leather accessories. Like the sleeves of a kimono, two folds of leather
form the map pockets on the back of the front seats. The rectangular clasp
is in genuine ebony, encrusted with the DS badge. Ebony, with its striking
banding, graces the instrument panel, the roof console and the door handle
escutcheons. The DS5 White Pearl harks back to Art Nouveau and Art
Deco in the use of noble materials entrusted to craftsmen. In terms of
embroidery, pins and basting were used to create the charcoal grey pleated
silk satin on the door panels, with glints of silver overstitching to offset the
tone-on-tone stitch. The fl oor mats are made of silk fi bre. Regarding lacquer
work, several coats of varnish were applied to the technical parts, to
bring out a subtle metallic sheen. These lacquered surfaces on the central
and roof consoles – and on the rims and fog vents on the exterior – evoke
a fountain pen. With the Citroën DS5 White Pearl, the occupants enjoy a
secret complicity. It is like putting on a tailor-made suit in the fi nest material.
An accessory with a magical quality. A lucky charm.

DS4, OU LE
REFUS DES CODES
THE DS4, REJECTING
CODES
contemporaine.
Codes are defi ning but also limiting. That means compromises.
Agile, lively, luxurious and contemporary, the Citröen DS4
slaloms between codes.
Conventions are often an admission of a limit that we don’t
know how or don’t dare to cross. To surpass a limit, you need to dare
to be different. Like the day in 1920 when Suzanne Lenglen, then
absolute women’s tennis champion, appeared on the court in a
dress above the knee. The spectators were stunned: impossible!
How could she reject the codes that required a sports outfi t to
reveal no more than the ankles? Pestered with questions, the champion
said simply and unselfconsciously, “because I play better like
this”. And went on to win her match hands down. No one ever questioned
her choice again, or her extreme elegance for that matter.
Although they are many decades apart, there is an affi nity between
Suzanne Lenglen and the DS4: it’s the desire to be stronger and go
further, without giving up anything in return. As soon as they were
released, the fi rst images of the DS4 travelled all over the Internet,
forwarded by fans. Which is not surprising. From the fi rst glance,
the DS4’s allure and line put it outside any of the conventional categories,
which are too simple and too restrictive. With the line of a
high-riding coupé, four doors and surprising dimensions (4.27 m
long, 1.81 m wide and 1.52 m high), the DS4 is both energetic
and exclusive, effi cient and refi ned. That paradoxical alliance of
racy and harmonious echoes the words of Marc Pinson, the
designer in charge of the project, “The DS4 is a coupé with
extended powers”. And powers evocative enough for its images to
spread across the Internet and encourage 60,000 Internet users
from 62 countries to vote the DS4 the “most beautiful car of the
year” in January.
Even glimpsed fl eetingly from afar, the DS4 promises to deliver.
But it is close up and in action that it reveals all its assets. That you
realise that there’s a reason behind every choice that went into it.
Because it plays better like this. When you enter the cabin, the fi rst
surprise are the rear doors, which you don’t even notice from the
outside. They offer exceptional access to a world that also offers
much more, because it does not seek to conform, but is simply
itself. Itself in the cabin space, which is impressively generous. Itself
in the light from the panoramic windshield. Itself in the refi nement
caressed by that light, with leather, aluminium and chrome outlining
a new driving universe where, at every instant, pleasure is
something for all the senses.
The intensity of that pleasure is felt from the fi rst turns of the wheel:
the engine range of the DS4 culminates in the THP 200. A powerful,
refi ned piece of machinery that effortlessly delivers intense,
positive feelings, with the elegance of an accomplished athlete who
does not need to show off her strength for it to be felt. When project
leader, Jérémie Maestracci, unveiled the DS4, he said, “We strove
to develop unique roadholding. We wanted the driver to feel the
wheels at his fi ngertips”. Mile after mile, the DS4’s behaviour
proves that the research paid off. There is a constant interplay of
comfort and vivacity, ease and driving pleasure. Not to mention
elegant coherence and an impressive range of features. Suzanne
Lenglen was admired as much when she appeared on the court as
when she bounded towards the ball. The DS4 is a car that people
turn to look at again after they’ve just stepped out of it. And are
already thinking about when they’ll be behind the wheel again.

With cars as with other objects, colour is never trivial. It functions
systematically as a cultural phenomenon and carries with it a certain
amount mystery. Colour historians for example have a littleknown
quest: to fi nd the recipe for true purple. Known in antiquity,
the secret is thought to have been lost during the Middle Ages.
Only one certitude remains: the word “purple” – derived from porphyry,
a dark red rock mixed with white crystals – refers less to a
colour than to a quality of matter and the way it plays with light. In
Old French, to specify the real colour of purple, the noun was
accompanied by an adjective, giving “pourpre verte” (green purple)
and “pourpre vermeille” (vermilion purple). Because all thought is
infl ected by symbolism, as the Western mindset formed purple
came to represent dignity, distinction and sophistication. In a dark,
heraldic tone, it is this historical lineage – semantic and graphic
alike – that the DS4 Park Purple revisits. “We set out to create a
masculine feel, confi dent, elegant and precious,” explains Thomas
Leret, Colours and Materials stylist at Citroën. “Inspired by the natural
personality of the vehicle, we explored a ‘contemporary
baroque’ concept. The Dark Purple satin-like hue expresses both
hypermodern reality and the imaginative power of the vehicle.”
A precision-worked, precious object, the DS4 in this guise reaches a
zenith of sophistication, subtly heightened by brushed metal components
set in the grille and surrounding the smoked glass windows
and by hand-worked parts in a “pink gold” colour. The DS4 Dark
Purple features a subcutaneous DS screen that surfaces on the rearview
mirror housings. Its sculptural profi le is emphasised by a
brushed texture and the brilliance of the side mouldings, which
resemble aristocratically wrought sabres. These sabres will remain
wisely sheathed. The Citroën DS4 proposes a new knightly order,
based on unbridled desire.
C5 ET C6
AU RÉVÉLATEUR
A NEW LIGHT ON THE C5 AND C6
Starting from a shape, the designers of the Colours & Materials department know how to bring out new
expressions in brand models. In this article we take a closer look at their work with Citroën’s executive models.
With the development of sound design for vehicles, taste is the
only one of the fi ve senses that continues to escape the designers of
the Colours & Materials department. For they are stylists with a difference.
On a fi lm set, they would be both the director of photography
and the costume manager. In other words, they are specialists in visual
aspects, the way in which the light plays on a surface or fabric, the
way in which a colour or texture can create a specifi c mood. “But the
star of the fi lm is the car! Our role is to fi nd the right adjectives, the
ones that express the intrinsic qualities of a car,” explains Olivier
Daillance, head of Citroën’s Colours & Materials department. Finding
the right adjectives is indeed important since the fi rst stage in a
project is always to collect the pictures and words that express the
ambience or mood required. The actual graphic work, such as developing
new surface aspects or innovative colours, or carrying out tests
on parts, will only come afterwards. For the Citroën C5 Série Noire
limited edition, even before making the decision to use matt black
paint, a clear objective took shape: to create something different, with
the focus on sophistication. “These matt paints come from the vehicle
tuning industry, particularly in the US. But you can see this same
satin-like fi nish appearing in sectors such as furnishing and electronics,”
explains Olivier Daillance. It is true that as leader in its segment
in France since its launch in spring 2008, the Citroën C5 had the
morphology required for this new form of expression.
Actually, rather than talking about matt paint, we should be talking
about satin paint. Because the deep black Perla Nera base is
treated with a varnish containing grains of silica that add a sparkle to
the fi nish of the C5 Série Noire. The paintwork is no longer solid, but
with subtle variations. “It adds a bold, surprising touch against a backdrop
of reliability and refi nement,” says Marc Chatrieux, head of special
series. At the same time, the chrome trim on the lower part of the
door mirror housings gleams like a brooch on a haute couture dress.
But fi rst and foremost, the objective for Citroën was to make its offer
accessible to the greatest number. The paint process, top of the door
mirror housings and wheels – costs one-third as much as the individual
paint booth personalisation options marketed by competitors on
the executive market. Citroën’s paint process is industrial. Standard.
On the French market, this matt black pack is part of the “Série
Noire”, special series, with 19-inch matt grey wheels and integral
leather on the seats, door panels, dashboard and central console. The
cabin roof is lined with seamless microfi bre fabric, another technological
feat. With the Série Noire limited edition the C5 is revealing
another aspect of its character, just as it did with the pearlescent white
bodywork launched at end-2009, which now accounts for no less
than 10% of sales. The C5 is restating its strength and sporty character,
while remaining true to itself.
This brings us back to the game of qualifying adjectives. And
when the game concerns Citroën’s fl agship vehicle, the C6, the result
is equally surprising. An option in black and white. After an initial alli-
ance of an ink blue body with an onyx black roof and arches, acclaimed by
visitors at the last Paris Motor Show, Citroën again opted for a two-tone
approach. “We have credibility in this area, with the DS3 and C4 Picasso
today and, going back in time, the CX with its incredible vinyl roof,” points
out Olivier Desserprit, C5 and C6 product manager. This new version of
the C6, sitting on diamond-tipped aluminium wheels, features a pearlescent
white body with a matt – or to be more precise – satin effect, and a black
lacquer roof. The roof design includes a surprise, dreamed up by the stylists
from Colours & Materials. The paintwork covers a pattern in relief, affi xed
using a technique known as maroufl age, as if the metal had sprung up in
places, creating a freehand contemporary work of art! With this feature,
Citroën shifts the perception of the C6 and pokes fun at its image, but with
fi nesse and elegance. Maybe that’s what you call the French touch. A touch
of humour in the intellectual discussions of an 18th century literary salon.
And the “drawing room” references do not stop there. The cabin of this version
features a club leather that apparently can only be obtained on order
from the most renowned luxury manufacturers. The two-tone interior continues
the dialogue between black and white. The black of the seats, insets
and roof lining, for example, with the white on some of the overstitching,
trim parts, mouldings and console. These pearl white parts are actually
chrome-plated, then covered with a thin coat of paint and a varnish. They
are multi-layered, just like oyster shells. Taste may be the only sense escaping
vehicle designers but they have mastered another: beauty.
The interior of the C6 Noir et Blanc is upholstered in black club leather
on the seats and on the door panel insets, offset by white club leather
on the “horse shoe” and pearlescent white lacquer trims.
The woodwork is covered in a microfi ber fabric with a soft “peachskin” feel.
the middle of a video conference with the London subsidiary when a
message lights up on his iPhone: “Chinese customers visiting our
is going to last until 5.30 pm. So what to do? He opens several windows
on his computer, trying to fi gure out how long it will take to drive to
Lodève in a car and checking out train times and hotel reservations. He
become so absorbed in these tasks that he completely loses the plot of
his meeting. He will be in Lodève in the morning, but only after a 300km
drive through the night following a stressful day – and sleeping in
his car because no hotel rooms were available along the way. This kind
of nightmare will very soon be a thing a past. Thanks to a website that
Citroën Multicity is a brand in its own
MOBILITÉ : UN HÉRITAGE
sa création, Citroën a proposé des
solutions de mobilité. Avec la
technologie de l’époque…
MOBILITY AS HERITAGE
Citroën has devised a number of
mobility solutions since creation,
including road signals in 1922 and
a bus line in 1924. With the
technology of the day…
The next day he will be as fresh as a daisy and ready for his Chinese
customers. He also won’t have lost track of his video conference. The
name of this new site is Citroën Multicity. In a Citroën innovation, for
the fi rst time ever all the services associated with mobility and travel are
grouped in a single area to instantly offer the best possible mobility
solution. Citroën Multicity (at www.citroen.multicity.fr) comprises an
extremely powerful and innovative route search engine (including
planes, trains, boats, cars, undergrounds, buses, bike sharing and walking!),
with car hire (featuring express reservations in three hours and the
Call Car service, see box p. 25, launched in September 2010) and
plane, train and hotel room reservations. “Citroën Multicity is both a
growing necessity and a very recent technological possibility,” say
Sylvie Lefebvre, Citroën mobility project manager, and Marie Lagisquet,
marketing manager for the project. “Mobility has never been so
necessary, at a time when it is increasingly complicated,” says Marie
Lagisquet. “People want to get around as smoothly as possible, with
less preparation time and at a better cost. But up until now you had to
do extensive research on the web to fi nd these solutions, and there
weren’t really any points of comparison between transport modes.”
This is one of the major innovations of Citroën Multicity. Its route
search engine compares transport modes on time and cost, and also on
carbon emissions. “People are aspiring more and more to sustainable
mobility,” says Sylvie Lefebvre. “This is refl ected in new behaviour, with
consumers choosing between different transport modes and looking for
new alternatives. Citroën is offering automotive products, with hybrids
and electric vehicles, but we also need to go further by including these
innovations in a broader approach. Citroën also has to be a brand of
mobility that makes journeys easier for everyone.”
Citroën had already made a strong statement in this direction with the
Call Car service, but Citroën Multicity is a new dimension, particularly on
a technical level, as Sylie Lefebvre says: “All these resources exist. But
having simultaneous access to them is quite a feat.” And development
has only just begun. Citroën Multicity is to be gradually extended across
Europe and the range of services will be expanded, working together
with the numerous partners of the service – and with the support of the
entire brand. “Citroën Multicity is also an entry point for selling dedicated
services to Citroën vehicle customers, using e-payment facilities for
mapping and maintenance contracts, among others. It’s new and it’s
100% Créative Technologie!”

TEMPÉRAMENT
SURVOLTÉ
ELECTRIC PERSONALITY
Un jaillissement de
roses, de jaunes et
d’oranges étincelants :
Citroën a confi é Survolt
à Françoise Nielly.
Une artiste haute
en couleurs.
An eruption of dazzling
yellows, oranges and
roses. Citroën called on
fl amboyant artist Françoise
Nielly to reinterpret the
Survolt concept car.
SIGNATURE - SIGNATURE
Question d’attirance.
28 ... CMAG _ AVRIL/APRIL 2011
Like a child told she is allowed to paint on the walls. That’s
how Françoise Nielly, speaking to us in her studio in northern Paris,
says she felt when Citroën asked her to work on Survolt. “By asking
me to add my touch to Survolt, Citroën gave me access to a very
beautiful object. The concept car is already a work of art in itself.
And there I was, with carte blanche to express myself in total liberty.
Survolt has a strong identity, which was certainly not to be broken. To
respect its spirit, all I had to do was follow its lines, the movement
underscored by the touches of fuchsia used by the designers to lend
rhythm to the charcoal grey body.”
In collaboration with Citroën designers, including Bertrand Dantec,
head of the Survolt project, and Vincent Lobry, Colours and
Materials specialist, Françoise Nielly’s work was extremely selective.
The transposition of one of her paintings, chosen by Citroën,
only concerns the front end and a part of the sides and roof. The artist’s
fl amboyant fl uorescent palette creates new contrasts, with Survolt
capturing the light in a different way and revealing other facets
of its personality. The “high-voltage” approach perfectly expresses
what is going on under the car’s bonnet, as Survolt is an entirely
electric racing car. And Françoise Nielly was far from indifferent
about the car’s drivetrain. She smiles as she talks about the cars
her dad had – sports cars and an “ultra technical” Citroën DS – her
grandfather’s Traction Avant and her teenage adventures in a 2CV.
At the time she was a team member in car racing, taking part in the
Paris-Saint Raphaël race, forerunner of the Rallye des Gazelles. A
wide-open-spaces approach to life.
Françoise Nielly inherited this taste for space from her architecture
father, who designed a number of contemporary houses on the Côte
d’Azur, which are now listed. Not so much the space that you imagine
as the space that you take, by making a clean sweep. Her great leap
came in 1998. After graduating from Ecole des Beaux Arts, teaching
drawing for a few years and working for 15 years as a freelance illustrator
and photographer in advertising, “I decided to devote myself to
painting. I guess I needed to be a bit crazy to do that, but something
vital was playing out.” She earned a living by giving adult painting
classes and went to live in Vancouver for two years. But most importantly,
she quickly found her own personal style. Earlier on she had a
phase doing pastel pictures from life, producing 19th century style
sketches of Paris scenes. But now she had found another motif, more
human and physical. She changed her technique, format and subject.
At fi rst she photographed models, to use for portraits and male
nudes. “Despite requests from collectors, I am incapable of painting
a female nude,” she laughs. If necessary, she reframes her photos
on a computer, especially for large format works (up to three metres
wide or high). Then she begins the work of transferring the image to
canvas – quite literally a knife fi ght, spreading, streaking and striving
to tame her material, namely fl uorescent-tinged oil paint. The process
is almost like a street fi ght, in which she liberates an unsuspected,
violent and instinctual energy. “A mingling of pleasure and unquenchable
desire,” the artist sums up succinctly, emphatically nipping the
psychoanalytic line in the bud. The rest of the story is about the viewer’s
gaze. Nose to the canvas, her paintings are practically abstract. Three
steps back and the faces and bodies are incredibly real. When asked
about artists she identifi es with, the virtuoso of colour and tonal elective
affi nities sees just one family: graffi ti artists. Those big kids that say
to themselves, “Yes, I can paint on the walls!”.
SIGNATURE - SIGNATURE
AUTO MUSE
Artcars have recently been created by the biggest names in contemporary
art, with Damien Hirst doing an Audi and Jeff Koons an Aston Martin
and a BMW. But the concept – along with that of “cartist” – is nothing
new. In the famously hot summer of 1976, Jean-Pierre Lihou designed
the “GS with arrows”, painting a Citroën GS X2 in a chromatic gradation
of 73 colours, fi tting one in to the next in the form of arrows. Motoring
history buffs are exploring a lead on an earlier example, dating back
to 1925. In the creative effervescence between the wars, painter and
decorative artist Sonia Delaunay is supposed to have painted a car
– a Citroën 5CV? – in a Mondrian-inspired design with geometric
shapes and vibrant colours.
A year after launch in Europe, the Citroën DS3 has become a market benchmark,
boasting strong sales and an extremely positive image.
30 ... CMAG _ AVRIL/APRIL 2011
passion », commente Michel Costa.
Some 80,000 DS3 cars have been ordered in Europe since launch
in March 2010. This is an impressive performance, certainly considering
the model’s premium positioning, and one that puts it on level
pegging with the Mini in Europe. The DS3 has actually overtaken the
Mini in France, Belux, Denmark and Norway. With its multi-faceted
personality and its ability to catch the eye and stimulate conversation,
the DS3 is one of today’s biggest motoring phenomena. The car’s success
is attracting new customers to the brand, which is a source of satisfaction
for Michel Costa, head of customer studies at the Products and
Markets department: “Nearly 40% of buyers are new customers. The
DS3 is clearly winning over a new clientele for Citroën.”
These customers want to show their difference and have motoring
fun, considering that nearly one in three models sold so far has been
the Sport Chic trim version featuring the most powerful engines, with
the THP 150 accounting for 20% of sales. Also, a full 80% of sales
are two-tone models. “We are pleased about this enthusiasm since
colour isn’t usually a decisive customer criterion,” says Michel Costa.
The result justifi es today’s broad offering of eleven body colours and
four roof colours, for a total 38 possible combinations. On top of that
come a range of personalisation options, with a selection of seven roof
decals, 12 wheel rim designs and almost as many colours for rearview
mirror housings and so on. Here again, almost all the customers share
the “tailor-made” spirit. “The DS3 perfectly refl ects a growing trend in
personalisation and emotional buys,” says Michel Costa. “Customers
pay a great deal of attention to all the premium details like the glossy
surfaces and LED daytime running lights. The idea is saying ‘My car
isn’t like other peoples’ cars, I have a DS3. By increasing the prestige of
an object that belongs to me, I increase my own prestige.’”
Another distinctive characteristic of DS3 owners is their age – on
average the youngest for any Citroën car. Also, in a fairly rare occurrence,
as many women as men buy the DS3. “They don’t buy the DS3
for the same reasons – the men focus on road behaviour, the women
on aesthetics – but the fact that we are appealing to both sexes with different
identity traits confi rms that the car has been properly developed
and is very complete,” Michel Costa observes. The DS3’s strength lies
as much in its coherence as in its originality. It is a compact fi ve-seater
car with a real boot and the highest levels in driving performance, style,
fi nish quality and comfort alike. “It is as pleasant to look at as it is to
drive, boasting impressive performance with no compromises on quality,”
says Thierry Blanchard, product manager at Products and Markets.
The DS3 is the very embodiment of “Créative Technologie”.
The appeal of the DS3 extends beyond its natural customers to refl ect
on the brand as a whole. “We’ve got people coming to the dealer network
who we wouldn’t have seen before. It’s an opportunity to show
them the rest of the Citroën range,” says Michel Costa. “The DS3 is
driving growth and excellence at all levels,” adds Thierry Blanchard.
“We are acquiring major expertise in this specifi c segment. This is
obviously the case in manufacturing, where we had to reinvent everything
to develop a car that is personalised on leaving the production
line. It’s a real sign of quality.” All that needs to be done now is
maintain this impressive success. “It is up to us to gain loyalty with
this type of car. How? By injecting it with even more new content and
appeal,” explains Michel Costa. Projects are certainly not scarce, with
new colour combinations, all-new decorative items and even more
prestigious fi ttings on the way.
“We are going to keep up the DS3 dynamic by playing on the interest
it is attracting, especially with the Internet, as refl ected in the ‘Créative
Award’, a competition in which the public submits ideas for vehicle customisation
on line. This is how we will achieve success – by examining in
depth the more specifi c needs of men and women and by fulfi lling the
needs of different markets that expect a lot from the Citroën DS3 and
want to appropriate it themselves.” A passionate future lies ahead.
UNE JEUNESSE
ÉLECTRIQUE
ELECTRIC YOUTH
Citroën works with students from the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London to give visibility
to its research into electric vehicle design.
et à New York.
« Who killed the electric car?
the electric car ».
Heikki Juvonen can’t wait to start his six-month contract in France at
Citroën’s Style Centre. He hopes the experience working in one of the
top places for automotive design will be an opportunity to test his belief
that when design is innovative, it can reinvent the world, and to strike a
balance with ideas he might not like because of a lack of imagination,
such as market and environmental constraints. Born in Finland, Heikki
is at home in the globalised community: he has studied in Finland, Germany,
the United States and China and has work experience in Austria
and New York. Like the other 15 students in their second year of the MA
in Vehicle Design at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London, Heikki
found out about Citroën’s future- oriented “Double Challenge” last
October. “With Stéphane Schwarz, who teaches at the RCA, we asked
the students to work on an innovative electric vehicle concept, but in a
formal style that matches Citroën vocabulary. If design is a language,
Citroën is a specifi c dialect of that language,” explains Philippe Holland,
Head of Citroën Designers. Himself the son of an English father
and a French mother, who trained at the Art Center College of Design in
Switzerland, Philippe handles relations with schools and oversees
internships. Citroën hosts four to six interns each year, to bring a fresh
eye to aspects of design, but mainly to spot new talent.
The electric vehicle is more of a revival than an invention. During the
design phase of their personal projects – that intellectual effervescence
which is one of the strengths of the RCA –, the students in London found
out that the fi rst electric car was built in… 1835! And that, in the early
twentieth century, there were more electric than fuel engines on America’s
roads! In the 1990s, a fully electric vehicle was almost launched in
California. The decision to scrap electric vehicles inspired conspiracy
theories… In a similar vein to Michael Moore, American fi lmmaker
Chris Paine made a documentary in 2006 called Who Killed the Electric
Car?, but has just detailed the electric car’s major comeback in a
sequel, to be released in 2011, Revenge of the Electric Car. What if,
less dramatically than a conspiracy, mentalities had changed simply?
“By subsidising ‘Double Challenge’, we want to compare our
vision with that of tomorrow’s designers. To see young people, for
whom electric cars will be a reality, give these vehicles an identity that
does not imitate existing vehicles but explores completely new
ground,” explains Philippe Holland. This is applied research: during
the Computer-Assisted Design (CAD) phase, the students regularly
submitted their work to Citroën’s partner in the operation, EXA
France, which has developed software to adjust the styles to aerodynamic
requirements. To use the industry jargon, the designs were
“frozen” in January 2011. And submitted to the panel of judges.
“Whatever the ups and downs of the three months of the challenge,
the students have produced some truly exceptional ideas for
the future design of electric Citroën vehicles,” comments Philippe
Holland. There were fl ashes of genius across a broad creative spectrum.
At the two extremes were the glamorous, unapologetic sedan
by Ian Kettle of England, and the ultra-simple three-wheel two-seater
by Scot Murray Westwater of Scotland designed for ordinary people
in China and India. The winners, chosen in two rounds by industry
designers and the whole panel, were announced on 4 February
2011, at the RCA’s traditional mid-year show. The jury consisted of
the Chairman of EXA France, representatives of PSA Peugeot Citroën,
heads of the Group’s electric vehicle programme and, of course,
Thierry Métroz, head of Citroën styling, with his teams. The people
who – in under 10 years – have made Citroën one of the most exciting
brands in the automotive industry. The ceremony must have
reminded them of their student days. The dreams that can be trained.
The opportunity that a competition like Double Challenge represents.
The winner of the evening took all of this in. Despite the high emotion.
“I’m thrilled they selected my design. Citroën innovates, creates a
style and gives a chance to young designers. There’s a mindset, an
attitude and a creativity specifi c to Citroën,” enthused Heikki Juvonen.
To say he’s excited about the six months he’ll be spending at
Citroën’s Style Centre is an understatement.
CREATING THE TRIGGER
Outside the “Double Challenge”, the interns at
the Style Centre continued to work on their
vision of future Citroën electric vehicles. Victor
Diemer, who graduated from Strate Collège
can create that trigger with a groundbreaking
innovation in the product’s design, the way
Dyson did with household appliances and
Apple did with computers,” suggests
Citroën
in the colours
of Brazil
Year after year, Citroën is strengthening its
positions in the world’s fourth-largest automotive
market. This achievement notably results from
the hard work of the teams at Citroën do Brasil.
it is also a combined result of the brand’s topquality
image, attractive range – as illustrated
in the recent C3 aircross launch – and
high-performance sales positioning
amid a booming economy.
le monde citroën - CiTroën’s worlD
L’an dernier,
On parle de « carros do desejo »,
Unlike Europe or the USA, Latin America’s number-one economy is
facing not a crisis but a boom, with 7.5% growth reported in 2010. The
well in a country where only one in seven inhabitants owns a car. The
country’s hosting of the Soccer World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic
Games in 2016 adds another heady dimension to this growth.
Against this background, Citroën do Brasil is doing more than simply
ride the wave; its growth is outstripping the market’s. Citroën sales last
year rose 21.29% on 2009 in a car and LCV market that increased
10.5%. The Marque sold 84,000 vehicles, 10,000 of which in
December alone, setting a subsidiary record. And so sights are being
set higher. “We achieved a 2.7% share of the car and LCV market in
2010. Our objective for 2011 is 3.3%, while boosting implementation
of the new brand image in the country,” says subsidiary director
Ivan Ségal. To do so, Citroën do Brasil can count on a broad and attractive
range, exemplifi ed by the C3 Aircross, which has scored promising
results since launch in September 2010. Citroën can also rely on
other locally-produced models such as the C3 and C4, whose success
continues undiminished. C3 sales rose 20% year on year to 39,939 in
2010 while those for the C4 totalled 25,493 in 2010 (13,550 for
the Hatch and 11,943 for the Pallas model). Also selling strongly are
the Xsara Picasso, produced in Brazil, and the imported C4 Picasso
and Grand C4 Picasso MPVs, to the tune of 11,397 units in 2010.
Another sign of Citroën’s excellent health in Brazil is the expansion
of its distribution network. “In 2011,” says Domingos Boragina Neto,
sales director of the subsidiary, “we are opening 15 new dealerships
with a focus on outlying areas in the country, while strengthening
our presence in the major urban centres.” The objective is to increase
the number of points of sale from 150 to 165 by year’s end. And the
new brand image will fi t the network like a glove. “The construction of
Citroën’s brand image in Brazil, starting in the early 90s, was focused
from the word go on a premium target through the attributes of technology
and creativity. This is why the ‘Créative Technologie’ concept
is a natural part of our DNA,” explains subsidiary marketing director
Nivea Ferradosa. Citroën do Brasil is using resonant and inventive
communication to increase recognition, which is still insuffi cient, and
to fi rmly instil the high-end image in the minds of motorists – especially
since Brazilians see Citroën as embodying the famous “French
touch”, both stylish and distinctive. “In Brazil,” says Ivan Ségal, “we
have an expression for the prestigious vehicles to which all motorists
aspire. We call them ‘carros do desejo’, which literally means ‘cars of
desire’. It is up to us to make the huge Brazilian population, whose
living standards are constantly on the rise, continue dreaming about
Citroëns up until the moment they can fulfi l that desire.” The highlyawaited
launch of the C3 Picasso in spring and the DS line in 2012 will
no doubt heighten Brazilians’ desire to drive a Citroën. The future can
be approached with peace of mind through healthy growth founded
on solid bases. “I don’t see an explosion in our market share in the
short term,” says Ivan Ségal. “Nor do I see the possibility of opening
70 points of sale in a year. Our growth will be achieved steadily and
surely if we succeed in developing brand recognition and improving
some glitches in our image such as the perception of our after-sales
prices and residual values. We also have to make considerable progress
in product quality and service quality.” The subsidiary has a clearly
stated aim of 112,500 sales in 2011. Which would take Citroën into
the big league of carmakers selling more than 100,000 units a year
in the country. “My conviction is that the Marque has a great future
in Brazil,” says Ivan Ségal. “The way we have built ourselves here,
the way things are organised and the way the market is growing and
segments developing all make us optimistic. We have the right products,
responsive and hyper-motivated teams and a well-structured and
ambitious network. And we have the right image positioning, which is
key to our development in the country. For me, all of this means a winning
equation for Citroën in Brazil.”
THE ADVENTURER
Citroën is continuing its development in Latin America with
the launch in Brazil of the Citroën C3 Aircross,
tailor made for this strategic market.
The Citroën C3 Aircross, launched in late September 2010, is a
pivotal step in Citroën’s development in Brazil and in Mercosur as a
whole. One of the strengths and originalities of the Aircross project
initiated in 2007 is that it was coordinated by local teams. “It’s the
fi rst concrete example of a vehicle project created, developed and
manufactured in Brazil, on the base of the C3 Picasso,” says Ivan
Ségal, director of the Brazilian subsidiary. The result is a compact
SUV perfectly suited to the wide-open spaces of South America and
the tastes of its inhabitants. And Brazilians in particular: Citroën sold
1,670 units there in December 2010, taking the total for the last few
months of the year to 4,250 and the C3 Aircross into the top three in
the segment. “We have a 16% share of the segment in February
The fi rst two photos of the
C3 Aircross were unveiled on
Twitter, generating buzz and
stimulating interest in the car.
still too early to make conclusions but I think we are on track to meet
our ambitious objective.”
The styling of the Citroën C3 Aircross is unequivocally inspired by the
world of off-road vehicles, evidenced in the raised ground clearance,
high-set headlamps, beefed up body protection and tailgate-mounted
spare wheel. In a vast country where road surfaces are often rudimentary,
drivers like slightly raised vehicles, as comfortable as they are
robust and equally at ease in cities or out on the open road. Fully
inhabiting its role of “civilised adventurer”, the C3 Aircross combines
go-anywhere spirit with plenty of style.
Appeal is underlined by special design details like the longitudinal
roof bars in aluminium, extending from the windscreen back to the rear
of the car, along with particularly well styled “Buggy Diamond” wheel
rims – a real advantage in a country where such accessories are a big
priority. The feel inside is a combination of innovation and refi nement,
with multiple signs of quality and technology new to this segment,
including the panoramic acoustic windscreen. The adventuresome newcomer
is available in three versions and fi tted with a 113 bhp 1.6 16V
fl ex-fuel engine running on petrol and/or ethanol. These features will
help to boost sales of the C3 Aircross and fi rmly anchor it in the range.
Success is largely about image, too, as Ivan Ségal reminds us: “With its
adventurer spirit, the C3 Aircross cultivates an edge to Citroën that we
haven’t worked on before. We are developing an interesting new angle
of attack in the Créative Technologie image in Brazil.”
Si l’État du Mato Grosso do
“After a long and meticulous preparation, the expedition departure
has fi nally been green-lighted. For 30 days, ten adventuresome
contestants escorted by three specialists are to show and
After an intimate kick-off reception at the PSA Peugeot Citroën
d’Amérique latine.
TAILOR-MADE
The Citroën C3 Aircross,
a compact SUV developed in
Mercosur, was built specially to
address the needs of the different
markets in Latin America.
accompanied by a trio of experts, Dalton (an anthropologist),
Valéria (musician) and Gabriel (head chef). Their mission was to
enliven the adventure by bringing viewers an alternative look at the
countless, still little-known riches and marvels of Brazil. The convoy
was rounded out by technical assistants, a photographer, a production
team and a team of cameramen, these last tasked with fi lming
images to be broadcast every day on the web and TV during and
after the expedition.
Every Tuesday evening for three months, TV viewers got to watch
the events in “Outros Lugares”, a reality show aired on Brazilian TV
channel Multishow. The event showcased the Citroën C3 Aircross
while focusing on the human aspect of the project. The adventurers
formed a close-knit and vivacious team, keen to learn, help others
and do good. Even through seemingly trivial acts. As demonstrated
by Matheus Croco, one of the highest-profi le contestants, who
appealed to viewers’ emotions with his epic rescue of a lizard in the
middle of the road. The audience’s emotions were also stirred by the
beauty of the 16 regions crossed by the expedition.
Mato Grosso do Sul was one of the states that impressed the contestants
the most – especially the town of Bonito – while the Mambaí
region in north-east Goiás marked them by the hospitality of the
inhabitants and the extreme sports (mountain climbing and rafting)
practiced there. Meanwhile, 41% of web users, who were able to
vote for their favourite places and journeys, voted for Pantanal, a
tropical wetland in the heart of Amazonia with one of the highest
concentrations of plant and animal life in the world. Further highlights
included a vertiginous crossing of the Funil waterfall in northeast
Goiás and the ascent of Pico da Bandeira, the third-highest
mountain in Brazil at 2,891 m, which marked the end of this magnifi
cent journey.
LE MONDE CITROËN - CITROËN’S WORLD
REAL-LIFE TEST
The C3 Aircross came out of this long journey with
barely a trace, demonstrating its robustness and
reliability. The only things to report were two fl at
tyres and slight damage to the windscreen and
bullbar. As was hoped, the SUV’s raised body made
off-road clearance easier, and even with only two
drive wheels the C3 Aircross proved particularly
easy to handle on muddy ground. A glowing report,
then, both for the vehicle and the contestants, who
had a riot, including those like Lika who had never
driven on dirt tracks before. The obstacle-packed
300 km between Mambaí and São Francisco were
the most athletic of the journey.
commente Anthony Esnouf, responsable projets Couleurs
perspective », sourit Anthony Esnouf.
carrosserie. C3 au comble du raffi nement.
A major detonation or just a few sparks? After the baroque style of
US artist Jeff Koons in 2008 and before the Japanese exuberance of
Takashi Murakami in 2010, France’s Xavier Veilhan placed the
emphasis on sophistication when he was invited to create an exhibition
for the domain of Versailles. The huge sculptures of this visual
artist took up temporary residence around the château and royal gardens
in 2009: here, an ultra-violet carriage made of welded steel
sheeting; there, a gallery of architects, huge aluminium giants
painted in dark grey. In appearance, these statues of illustrious men
are smooth, modelled, even monolithic. But a closer look reveals surprising
details in their design. In reality, they are like origami: cleverly
assembled geometric forms with folds, angles and facets. “Irrespective
of whether it comes from art, design or architecture, this is exactly
the type of creation that can inspire vehicle stylists. For us too, the
objective is to play with visual aspects, the shift between the overall
perceptions we have of a car and our surprise when we step closer and
walk round it,” says Anthony Esnouf, head of Colours & Materials
projects at Citroën. As a graduate in design and marketing, option
luxury, and somebody who has worked in both the furnishings and
cosmetics industries, he knows that cross-fertilisation from one sector
to another can be highly productive. The prisms used by Xavier Veilhan,
already seen on the airy façade of C42, Citroën’s showcase on
the Champs-Elysées in Paris, is also echoed in… the C3 Red Block concept.
The rearview mirror housings, tailgate strip and dashboard fascia
feature 3D faceted parts in glossy black, immediately bringing to
mind the world of high-tech electronics. “This was one of the challenges:
to bring out the dynamic personality of the C3 through
sophisticated detailing,” continues Anthony Esnouf. With its lower
stance and new running gear, this C3 concept is not feigning sporting
talent. It is simply giving full rein to its athletic qualities.
The matt thorium grey bodywork of the C3 Red Block resembles a
pebble thrown up by the ocean. The body is underlined in a satin-like
red, on the diamond-tipped wheels and as a narrow border along the
side-window weather strips. A minimal signature. Almost a calligraphic
symbol, since the red adopted for the concept, developed by
Citroën stylists, is clearly inspired by Japanese art. This exterior line
lends immediate legibility to the taut but full profi le of the C3. Everything
appears to contribute to this impression of subtle, agile power.
Most of the features that are in matt chrome on the basic model are
now in glossy onyx black such as, for example, the windscreen surround,
the sides of the front bumper, and the air intake trim on the
grille. The revelatory efforts continue on the headlamps, with their
alternating matt and shiny effects, the dark housing and the sparkle
of the chrome around the bulbs. “For the interior, we wanted to
reverse the perspective,” smiles Anthony Esnouf. In front of the front
passenger, the soaring facets of the dashboard, similar to those on
the rearview mirror housings, provide a link between inside and outside.
But the rest is based on the principle of reverse copying. The
C3 Red Block shows that is a car with real temperament. Both front
and rear seats are upholstered in red leather, in exactly the same
shade as the discreet exterior signature. The same shade but with very
different tones: on the body, it symbolises a fresh, wakefulness; in the
cabin, it becomes a dominant expression of force, vitality, and
strength in movement. For the topstitching of the upholstery, Citroën
chose grey thread in a shade identical to the thorium grey of the bodywork.
The C3 reaches the heights of sophistication.
+++
Block. C’est en effet la teinte de la
sellerie en cuir, un rouge
nacré aux refl ets orangés.
PENDULUM EFFECT
On the outside, red is just part of
the exterior signature. On the inside,
however, it dominates the C3 Red Block.
It is the colour chosen for the leather
upholstery, pearlescent red with
orangey refl ections.
AN EMANCIPATED CITIZEN
The C3 has changed while remaining true to its identity.
Presented in 2009, the second-generation 2003 maintained
the non-conformist spirit of its predecessor, launched seven years
earlier. Citroën’s hallmark. Although the body style maintains
the same rounded curves, making it stand out from the crowd,
the new C3 appears to have greater visual impact and fi ner features.
Above all, this compact urban vehicle claims a quality of fi nish
worthy of vehicles in the next segment up. Through its architecture,
space and choice of materials, the C3 is seeking to move beyond
the traditional limits of the market. In order to conquer
it more effectively.
ADN.
génétique a réussi.
UFO. L’art, en ses métamorphoses.
To subtilise is to slyly appropriate rather than to steal. And of
course, the word also means to render subtle. It is by subtilising
objects and taking them out of their context that French designer Oraïto,
born in 1977, made his high-profi le arrival on the interna-tional
scene. In the late 90s he delved into the identity of universal brands
including Ap-ple, Nike and Vuitton, appropriating their DNA to produce
all-new, truer-than-life prod-ucts in 3D on his computer screen.
The public loved his work, lining up to buy his “prod-ucts”. Rather
than crying “Thief!”, the brands in question were wise enough to
appreciate the subtlety of the designer’s approach. And a design star
was born. Ora-ïto’s Parisian studio has since moved on to creating real
objects in architecture and design, including silverware, jewellery,
cosmetics, furniture and lamps, but the designer hasn’t fi nished with
the question of genetics. The theme inhabits all of his formal work,
which strives to attain the essential core of things.
Firmly eschewing fashion and trends, Ora-ïto ques-tions his work continuously
and is building his own vocabulary. For example, his work on
giving objects with complex functions a simple appearance he calls “simplexity”,
which is immediately understandable. People talk about the
weight of evidence. But actually this evidence has to be crafted in order to
get to the root source: mental images. The faculty of imagination. All of
Ora-ïto’s energy is focused on just that: making the imagination visible.
The artist’s imagination knows no chronological borders. He rifl es
through history at will. As when his memory of the free-standing chassis
promoted by André Citroën in the in-terwar period led him to design his
fi rst, signifi cant artistic project. For the world of art and design, Citroën is
a living source of inspiration with its “historical” classics such as the Traction
Avant, the 2CV and the DS. After working with Citroën for several
years on architectural projects, notably motor show stands, Ora-ïto
turned his attention to the brand’s heritage, faithful to his reputation as
a DNA explorer. And so what can the phi-losophy of a designer bring to
the automotive world? Perhaps nothing less than the reali-sation of a
childhood dream. The materialisation of an ideal mental image, a playful,
re-assuring object that projects itself environmentally and joyfully
into the future. At any rate, far from received ideas. Once again, Ora-ïto
is dealing with genetics. And in this case, genetic transformation. For scientists,
genetic mutations are accidents, “mistakes” that occur during
embryonic division. But when they result from human intervention, from
the desire to splice typology of the past with the automobile of today,
then chance becomes necessity and an irreversible organic fusion gives
rise to a new DNA. An all-new species with an alternative heredity, to
which Ora-ïto gave the understated name of “EVO”.
In the evolutionary process – what biologists call “speciation” – EVO is
a monotype, the sole representative of its species. A life capsule with long
appendages, tapering stalks that reinterpret André Citroën’s famous
self-standing chassis, EVO is a singular and as-tonishing contemporary
sculpture. And yet a certain familiarity is at play. With its organic profi le,
drawn with impressive economy, the vehicle seems to leave a visual
wake, as if creating a furrow. Whether primordial gamete or cell nucleus,
EVO lends itself to combi-nations, to fertilisation. Drawing on this same
genetic heritage, Ora-ïto created a series of complementary modules.
Serving as options for the basic vehicle – “wheels” and “roll cages” if
these workaday names have much sense here – these artistic designs
connect to the vehicle and extend EVO’s realm of exploration. They turn
EVO into a fi gurehead, the fi rst in a line of future-looking concepts, demonstrating
that the genetic transforma-tion has succeeded and opening
up previously unexplored automotive prospects. What we have here is
not one but several genetic transformations. The pages of Citroën’s
90-year history contain striking images, like the poster showing the
sophisticated hy-dropneumatic suspension of the DS. The vehicle was
depicted wheel-less, like a space-ship buoyed by four balloons, themselves
fl oating on the water. Pictures like this form a memory trail that led
Ora-ïto onward to dream up another possible transformation: this time
into a fl ying saucer, a UFO. Art in metamorphosis.

IL Y A 50 ANS :
L’AMI 6
AMI 6 CELEBRATES 50TH
People are still mad about the Citroën Ami 6, 50 years after launch. No doubt due to its body styling
– one of the most original in French automotive history.
Citroën’s passenger car range in the late 50’s was split between
working-class 2CV and bourgeois DS. So the directors at Quai de
Javel decided to produce a model in the middle, for families who
found the 2CV too small and the DS too expensive. Development of
the new mid-range model was headed by Flaminio Bertoni, the genius
behind the styling of the Traction, 2CV and DS. His remit was to
design a roomy car measuring under four metres long with a large
boot. Studies for the M project began in 1957. With the choice of a
three-volume body dictated by budget restrictions, the engineers
were obliged to use the 2CV chassis and a powertrain closely related
to the famous air-cooled fl at two-cylinder, with capacity up from
425 cc to 602 cc, for a French fi scal rating of 3 CV.
Initial power, originally intended to be used constantly at high engine
speeds, was gradually increased from 22 bhp to 35 bhp, with no detriment
to the unit’s legendary reliability. The Ami 6 boasted irreproachable
roadholding and excellent economy in use, but the standout
feature was its boldly styled body. When it was presented to the
press on 24 April 1961, reactions were strong and contrasted. What
surprised – and sometimes shocked – people was the reverse-raked
rear window, a design employed by Bertoni to ensure ample headroom
for passengers and a suffi ciently capacious boot in a compact
vehicle. With the serpentine forms of its front end, studded with oversized
personality and, as some said at the time, “baroque style”. But it also
had other, non-aesthetic surprises up its sleeve, accomplishing a marketing
innovation with advertisements that read “the ideal second car
Inside, the Ami 6 took its inspiration from the DS, a benchmark in
cabin design. The Ami 6 borrowed its big sister’s single-spoke steering
wheel, door handles, switchgear and seats. It was widely lauded
for its road manners and comfortable ride, inherited from the 2CV.
Very few modifi cations would be made to the original model, apart
from the addition of more luxurious equipment. Fans have a particular
weakness for the conical indicator lights adopted in 1965 and
also prefer the “holly leaf” fabric of the fi rst models. A painted roof
was presented as an option a year after launch. But the key event
came in late 1964 with the arrival of the estate version boasting a
320-kg payload. Designed by Henri Dargent, Bertoni’s assistant,
and then by Robert Opron, Bertoni’s successor, the estate boosted
which also provided considerable load volume for a car in this segment,
could be used by families for comfortable long-distance trips and
also by travelling salespeople and the self-employed. The Ami 6
went on to become France’s favourite car. Production of the saloon
ended in March 1969, followed two years later by the estate,
replaced by the less unusual Ami 8 and its “properly” raked rear
LES QUATRE
ENNEMIS DU PILOTE
A DRIVER’S FOUR
WORST ENEMIES
Adapting to all kinds of situations is a rally driver’s job. But some external factors are particularly
unwelcome. Seven-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb told us about them.
LES PIERRES
Dans un championnat du monde composé
essentiellement d’épreuves sur terre, un
pilote allergique aux pierres aurait du
souci à se faire… Heureusement, toutes
SAFETY
The FIA has introduced strict criteria
on safety. Specials are approved only
after an inspector has checked the
course to ensure that the public is
safely positioned.
STONES
With the World Rally Championship mainly contested on
gravel, an allergy to stones would obviously be a serious
handicap for a driver. But fortunately not all stones present the same
risk for the team and its car. Some are more dangerous than others.
Nestled discreetly on the inside of a bend or on a verge, drivers don’t
see them before they hit! Depending on their shape, damage can
range from a simple fl at to a broken suspension or an off-road tumble.
“Since we stopped using our own course-opening cars for gravel
events, we don’t get updates on information between recces and our
turn in the special,” Sébastien Loeb explains. “If stones appear on
the track, no-one tells us about them. And they have become more
dangerous since puncture-proof foam inside tyres was banned a few
seasons ago.” But the winner of seven championships is not overly
concerned. “The risk of getting a fl at is higher, but the tyres we use
are extremely resistant with practically unbreakable sidewalls and we
really haven’t had many punctures to worry about.” While large and
sharp stones are a real danger, others, that may seem more anodyne,
are a true nightmare for drivers. In certain gravel rallies, specials are
covered with a fi ne layer of pebbles that disappear as each successive
car goes by. So the driver that goes fi rst is condemned in a way to
“clearing” the way for those that follow, which is quite a handicap! For
the fi rst stage of an event, this punishment is reserved for the leader
of the championship. Being fi rst out at rallies such as Greece, Sardinia
and New Zealand is a source of great apprehension for the drivers.
REDUCED VISIBILITY
The system of notes used by Sébastien Loeb describes the
route so precisely and objectively that he could drive
the special blindfolded. However, the seven-time world champion
ill appreciates reduced visibility. “When there’s fog or you’re driving
through dust, you obviously don’t go as fast!” If in theory fog is more
or less identical for all drivers, the same does not apply to dust. In
some rallies the dust stirred up by competitors remains suspended
in the air and forms an opaque cloud – a situation that can lead to
considerable gaps between teams. “It can get to be a big problem,”
says Sébastien, “because the person that goes fi rst sometimes has an
advantage. They can open up a minute’s lead purely because those
behind can’t keep up the same rhythm in the dust. I have terrible
memories of Sardinia at the start of a special on a plain. There was
no air and no wind but a huge, thick and static cloud formed above
the plain with the passage of each successive car. We were on the
start line and when we set off we couldn’t even see the fi rst bend!”
This phenomenon usually occurs at dry rallies but it also depends on
atmospheric pressure and the humidity rate. As a whole, it remains
unpredictable.
HEAT
“The rally I dread the most in terms of heat is Greece,”
Sébastien admits. “I remember a 45-km special where
even before the start, we were standing under a tree and the heat was
killing us. So you can imagine how epic it was when we were in the
cabin and in full action! There’s not much you can do in situations like
that. Personally I’ve never used anything in particular to combat the
heat.” The only thing you can do to avoid taking ill is drink as much
as possible. Teams can drink as much as seven litres a day. When it
is extremely hot outside, the temperature for the driver and co-driver
can rise up to 50°C in the cabin. And driving in a T-shirt is out of
the question! On top of that, most of these rallies (Greece, Jordan,
Cyprus, Sardinia) are held on very dry ground that sends up copious
amounts of dust, which means no cabin ventilation. And for reasons
of weight, WRC cars can’t be fi tted with air conditioning. But engi-
neers are not entirely insensitive to the plight of the teams. For the
DS3 WRC, Citroën’s design offi ce concocted a seat shell fi tted with an
air circulation system to improve the comfort of drivers and co-drivers
during suffocatingly hot specials.
SURPRISE GUESTS
For a long time, the mass presence of discipline-challenged
spectators gave some rallies a wild sort of bullfi ght
air. Happily, these dangerous situations, highly stressful for rally
teams, are now a thing of the past. “Apart from Monte Carlo, which
isn’t even on the WRC calendar any more, dangerous spectator behaviour
has really become marginal,” says Sébastien. Fans know now
that if they aren’t in the right place the organisers will cancel the start
of the race. And yet there are still a reckless few who venture out into
the road just as the cars go by. Everyone still remembers the gendarme
strolling leisure-like along the road at Monte Carlo as Sébastien
Loeb bore down on him at high speed. “I didn’t make much of it at
the time,” says Sébastien. “I didn’t even speak to Daniel about it. He
found out about it later on YouTube. I spotted the man 200 metres
away and not for a second did I think I’d hit him. I had no doubts at
all and I timed it so that I’d pass just behind him.” Sébastien demonstrated
the same cool head at the latest Rally de Portugal, when he
came face to face with a biker – in the middle of a special! Fortunately
these events are few and far between. But if the FIA has been able
to tame the enthusiasm of spectators, animals are another kettle of
fi sh! Not particularly concerned about specials getting cancelled, they
sometimes appear where least expected. “I remember an encounter
with a bull at Rally Argentina. I saw it as I came out of a bend. I braked
as hard as I could but straightaway I knew it was in vain. I tried to steer
round it but I touched it and the stones on the left-hand verge. I didn’t
get a fl at and I didn’t break anything but it could have resulted in withdrawal.”
Sébastien eventually went on to win the rally. But other drivers
haven’t been so lucky. Take Tommi Mäkinen. Doing 150 km/h
on a narrow road in the Tour de Corse rally he hit a wandering cow and
ended up in a ravine 40 metres below, with a completely totalled car.
In Australia in 2005 Petter Solberg lost any chance of winning a race
that he led at one point when he ran into a kangaroo. Unfortunate
incidents like these are part and parcel of rally racing but nevertheless
a source of anxiety for all the competitors.
CLIMATISATION
La performance passant souvent
avant le confort, les ingénieurs
écartent systématiquement l’option
les voitures de course… sauf
quand le règlement l’impose !
Ce fut notamment le cas en sport
AIR CONDITIONING
Because performance takes precedence
rule out air conditioning onboard rally
