Lode Quarry, Latvia - Gauja Formation - Upper Devonian
The fossils of the Lode Quarry are not uniformly distributed in the formation; on the
contrary, they have been concentrated in lenticular strata. Only three strata rich in fishes have been
identified in the Lode Quarry (Kurss 1992). The actinopterygians as well as the coelacanths are
absent). The six species of agnathans all belong to the group of heterostracans. The placoderms
are not highly diversified, while the sarcopterygians are relatively more diversified.
Some thirty complete specimens of adults and juveniles of the placoderm Asterolepis have
been discovered. The remains of Strunius are rare and were only quite recently described
(Luckevic 1995). Grossipterus and Glyptolepis balthica are known from only a few isolated
bones. A few rare subcomplete specimens and several isolated components (mainly scales and
teeth) of the porolepiform Laccognathus have been collected. Approximately ten specimens of
Panderichthys represent the most important discovery made at the Lode Quarry. Until postcranial
remains of Elpistostege are to be discovered at Miguasha, the axial and appendicular skeleton of
elpistostegids are known only for Panderichthys.
Most of the specimens of Asterolepis, Laccognathus and Panderichthys found are
complete specimens preserved three dimensionally. Ontogenetic series of Asterolepis and several
articulated juvenile specimens of acanthodians and sarcopterygians have been collected (Upeniece
and Upenieks 1992).
Palynological remains (spores) are present but not very abundant, while well-preserved
fragments of plants have been assigned to the genera Archaeopteris, Svalbardia and Platyphyllum
(Upeniece and Upenieks 1992). Conchostracans and ostracods (arthropods) have been discovered,
associated with the vertebrates.
