Je m’appelle Diane Gariépy. J’ai 57 ans et
je suis célibataire. J’ai un fils, Jonathan,
qui a 21 ans : il est tout pour moi. La
journée où je suis née, le 15 juillet 1955,
on enterrait mon père. Je suis la dernière de
10 enfants. J’ai toujours senti que ma mère
m’avait rejetée, préférant un de mes frères.
C’est donc une de mes soeurs qui m’a
élevée. J’aimais l’école : j’aurais voulu être
infirmière. J’ai dû toutefois laisser l’école
pour aller travailler afin d’aider ma mère.
Aujourd’hui, je garde contact avec certains
membres de ma famille. On s’appelle, mais
on ne se voit pas.
Little things
that Make
Me Happy

It’s the little things in life that make me
happy. Like when I leave my apartment
in the morning, I like going to the coffee
shop. I order a double espresso or a large
regular coffee. With the little money I
make selling my magazine, the happiness
goes towards this coffee. Once in a while, I
will have a muffin. Also, another pleasure
I have is to buy a cappuccino at the market
near where I live. It only costs a dollar, and
I usually have a cigarette with it. I like
talking with Joe who works at the market.
He works everyday from 7 am to 1 am in
the morning. He’s been working like that
Jusqu’en 2004, j’ai travaillé au restaurant
Pinocchio sur la rue Saint-Charles à
Longueuil. J’ai perdu mon emploi parce
qu’ils ont fermé les portes. J’ai vécu dans la
rue de 2004 à 2009. Pendant cette période,
j’ai fréquenté les refuges pour pouvoir me
nourrir, me vêtir et dormir. Ça a été très
dur de vivre ainsi.
J’ai aussi fait un séjour de 45 jours en
prison, à Tanguay. À cette même période,
j’ai rencontré Christiane, qui est devenue
une très bonne amie et qui m’a beaucoup
aidée. Je suis à l’aise de parler avec elle et
elle m’a fait comprendre bien des choses.
J’ai une chambre chez elle : c’est tout un
changement dans ma vie.
L’an passé, j’ai fait une thérapie pour
m’aider à m’en sortir et depuis le 10 mars
2012, je suis avec L’Itinéraire. Je tiens
à remercier Gaétan qui m’a permis de
connaître le journal.

magazine.
Another thing that makes me happy is
watching TV; it’s interesting to watch all
the different shows, and I get informed
about what’s happening in our world.
We have to have knowledge and better
understanding to cope with everyday life.
I feel accomplished after I finish work, and
a coffee helps me relax and end my day
on positive note. When I sip my coffee, I
think back to the people I talked to while
I was working. I remember the good
conversations. It’s like a little reward. I
don’t think I could live without these little
pleasures in my life. I only ask for a little,
not a lot. But maybe someday I’ll have
more than a little. And maybe by praying,
Jesus will answer my prayers.
