3.3. Committee Work
During Committee Work from November 12 th to 15 th , the
delegates discussed their specific committee topics that had
been drafted by the European Youth Parliament and suggested
amongst others by the European Parliament and the Council of
Europe. Topics focussed for instance on how the EU can better
listen to its citizens and increase its democratic legitimacy, what
action the EU can take to ensure that sustainable adequate
sanitary water is available around the world or how the EU
should meet its growing energy needs whilst ensuring reduced carbon emissions. Each committee
was moderated by an experienced chairperson. Expert hearings were organised on Tuesday
afternoon with experts from numerous universities, NGOs and companies. After two and a half
days, each committee had drafted a resolution on their topic.
3.4. General Assembly (Dàil Èireann, Irish National Parliament)
General Assembly (GA) was held in the Irish
National Parliament from Friday, 16 th to
Saturday 17 th of November. At the official
opening of GA, the young delegates were
addressed by the President of Ireland, Mary
McAleese, who stated: “(…)Participating in
the European Youth Parliament gives you a
flavour of what it is like to be a Member of
Parliament having to reconcile various
opinions. Working to achieve a majority.
When to compromise. (...)".
Following the procedures of the European Parliament, each committee proposed their resolution
to the Assembly during the two days of GA. Attack and defence speeches were followed by lively
and intense open debates and, ultimately, voting. Passed resolutions are presented to the Council
of Europe, the European Parliament, the European Commission, national governments, the
European Youth Forum and the media. Please find the resolution booklet as well as a few
examples of the coverage in print enclosed to this report, or follow these links to TV reports:
3.5. Cultural and Social Programme
The official agenda was enriched by an additional varied cultural and social programme. On
November 10 th , the Eurovillage took place, presenting traditional food and drink of each
participating country in a market-place atmosphere. This event was hailed enthusiastically and
helped the participants to get to know each other better and find out about each other’s cuisine
and customs.
