Chers lecteurs
Je me suis rendu les 22 et 23 mai à Hargeisa, au Somaliland,
région du nord de la Somalie revendiquant son indépendance
bien qu’elle ne soit pas reconnue par la communauté
internationale. J’y ai notamment rencontré le Président Ahmed
Mahamoud Silanyo et trois de ses ministres, en charge des
affaires présidentielles, des affaires étrangères et de la justice,
ainsi que Mme Edna Adan, personalité remarquable, ancienne
ministre, directrice de l’hôpital universitaire qui porte son nom
(et que la France a soutenu à hauteur de 100
000 €) et excellente francophone.
Le Somaliland offre la démonstration que
l’instabilité et la guerre ne sont pas une fatalité
en Somalie. Depuis 22 ans, la région vit une
expérience, certes fragile mais positive, de
démocratisation et de développement. Des
élections pluralistes y ont été menées, et une
alternance politique s’y est même produite en
2010.
Petit à petit, le Somaliland se développe,
attire des investissements et garantit certains
services de base à sa population, dans une
relative stabilité. A bien des égards, cette
expérience peut servir de modèle au reste
de la Somalie, et j’ai encouragé le président
Silanyo à poursuivre le dialogue ouvert
avec le gouvernement fédéral en vue d’une
coopération plus étroite à tous les niveaux,
et afin que le Somaliland participe à la
stabilisation du pays dans son ensemble.
Les enjeux communs sont en effet
considérables, en particulier la lutte contre
le terrorisme d’Al Shabaab, la piraterie et les
trafics des êtres humains, mais également la sécurité alimentaire
et le développement économique.
La France et l’Union européenne sont attachés à l’unité et à la
pleine souveraineté de la Somalie. Ceci n’empêche pas que nous
continuerons à soutenir les évolutions positives du Somaliland
et à apporter notre aide dans les domaines de la gouvernance,
de la démocratisation, du développement économique et de
la sécurité. L’Union européenne est d’ores et déjà le premier
partenaire du Somaliland. A titre bilatéral, le renforcement de
notre présence est attendu, que ce soit en matière culturelle,
notamment d’enseignement du français, ou économique. C’est
pourquoi j’ai transmis au président Silanyo l’invitation du
gouvernement français à se rendre prochainement à Paris,
afin de discuter ensemble tous ces sujets. Nous attendons
beaucoup d’un nouveau développement de nos relations avec le
Somaliland.

On the 22 and 23 May I was in Hargeisa, Somaliland, a region of
northern Somalia claiming its independence although it is not
recognized by the international community. I met with President
Ahmed Mahamoud Silanyo and three of his ministers in charge
of presidential affairs, foreign affairs and justice, and as well as
Mrs. Edna Adan, a remarkable personality, former minister and
the director of the university hospital that bears her name (and
which France supported to the tune of € 100,000) and an excellent
French speaker.
Somaliland has demonstrated that instability
and war are not fatalities in Somalia. For 22
years, the region has undergone a democratization
and development experience, certainly
fragile but positive. Multiparty elections have
been held, and political change has even been
witnessed there in 2010.
Gradually, Somaliland keeps growing, attracting
investment and guaranteeing certain basic
services to its population, within the context
of a relative stability. In many ways, this
experience can serve as an example to the
rest of Somalia, in that regard, I encouraged
President Silanyo to continue discussions with
the federal government for closer cooperation
at all levels of dialogue, so that Somaliland
participates in the stabilization of the country
as a whole.
Common stakes are indeed high, especially
in the fight against the Al Shabaab extremists,
piracy and human trafficking, but also food
security and economic development.
France and the European Union are committed
to the unity and full sovereignty of Somalia. This does not
mean that we will not continue to support the positive developments
in Somaliland and to offer our assistance in the areas
of governance, democratization, economic development and
security. The EU is already the leading partner of Somaliland.
On bilateral basis, strengthening our presence is expected, be
it in cultural matters, including teaching French, or economic.
That is why I sent the invitation from the French government to
President Silanyo to go to Paris soon to discuss all these issues.
We expect a lot of a new development of our relations with
Somaliland.

Les efforts soutenus de la Kenya Film Comission -guidée par la France depuis 3 ans- , dans le développement de sa mission de soutien à l’industrie du cinéma, et la
mobilisation d’un grand nombre de professionnels français et internationaux, ont permis cette année, de donner une visibilité jusque là jamais atteinte, à l’ensemble des
participants kenyans, et de leur faciliter l’accès aux coproducteurs qu’ils recherchent. The efforts by the Kenya Film commission - guided by France for 3 years - in its
mission in development and support to the film industry, and the commitment of a large number of french and international professionals, has given exposure never
witnessed before, to all kenyan participants, facilitating their access to coproducers they have been in search of.

NAIROBI
L’exposition photo-texte «Lest We Forget
- Triomphe sur l’esclavage», présentée par
l’Alliance Française de Nairobi, en partenariat
avec le Bureau régional de l’UNESCO pour
l’Afrique de l’Est, a eu lieu du 8 au 31 mai
à l’Alliance Française. L’exposition était
présentée à l’occasion du 13e anniversaire
de la fête nationale française du souvenir
de la traite négrière, de l’esclavage et de son
abolition.
The photo-text exhibition “Lest We Forget
– The Triumph Over Slavery”, presented by
Alliance Française of Nairobi in partnership
with the UNESCO Regional Office for
Eastern Africa, took place from the 8th
to the 31st of May at Alliance Française.
The exhibition was being presented to
mark the 13th anniversary of the French
National Day in Remembrance of the
Slave Trade, Slavery and its Abolition.

Wanuri Kahiu ‘Jambula tree’, avait

réalisateurs étrangers de développer
leur scénario, entourés de professionnels
internationaux. Initiative de l’Institut
Français, l’opération qui fêtait ses 5
ans, était parrainée cette année par le
réalisateur haïtien Raoul Peck.

audiovisual attaché. ‘Jambula tree’,
the second long feature film project of
Wanuri Kahiu, had also been selected
this year for La Fabrique des Cinémas
du Monde which allows each year,
up to 8 foreign filmmakers to develop
their scenario with international
professionals. An initiative of the
Institut Français, which celebrating
its 5th anniversary, was sponsored this
year by the Haitian filmmaker Raoul
Peck.

Urban planning
The last Governing Council of UN-Habitat highlighted
the importance of urban planning in the context of rapid
growth of developing cities. Some regions, including Africa,
will see their population double in the next twenty years.
Inclusive urban planning is one of the tools which will allow
a positive development of cities: by
better involving all stakeholders,
it will prevent the development of
urban social divide by fighting against
slums proliferation and favour access
to basic services for all. Furthermore,
by encouraging the development of
more compact cities, it will better
protect the environment. To support
this concept, the responsibility to
develop international guidelines on
urban and territorial planning has
been given to UN-Habitat during
its Governing Council. The creation
of these guidelines will rely on a
dialogue with all the partners of the agenda (local authorities,
civil society, etc.). The guidelines will be a very useful tool
which will help developing cities and facilitate a multi-level,
coordinated and inter-sectoral action. France, which sponsored
the resolution with India, and has been given a European lead
on the guidelines, will fully engage in this process.

La planification urbaine
Le dernier Conseil d’administration d’ONU-Habitat a souligné
le rôle majeur de la planification urbaine dans un contexte
de très forte croissance des villes en développement.
Certaines régions, notamment l’Afrique, verront en effet leur
population doubler dans les vingt prochaines années. La
planification urbaine inclusive fait
partie des outils qui permettront
un développement positif des villes
: en incluant mieux les acteurs, elle
permettra de prévenir la formation
de fracture urbaine en luttant contre
la formation de bidonvilles et en favorisant
l’accès aux services de base
pour le plus grand nombre. Par ailleurs,
en favorisant la formation de
villes plus compactes, elle préservera
mieux l’environnement. Pour appuyer
ce concept, la définition de lignes directrices
internationales sur la planification
urbaine et territoriale a été confiée
à ONU-Habitat à l’occasion de son Conseil d’administration.
La création de ces lignes directrices s’appuiera sur une concertation
avec l’ensemble des partenaires de l’agenda (autorités locales,
société civile, etc.) et sera un outil très utile qui viendra
soutenir les villes en développement et facilitera une action inclusive,
coordonnée et multisectorielle. La France, qui a parrainé
la résolution avec l’Inde et s’est vu confier un rôle de chef de file
européen, saura s’impliquer pleinement dans leur élaboration.

Le prix des VI
Le 23 mai, sous les auspices de l’Ambassadeur de France M.
Etienne de PONCINS, la section Kenya des Conseillers du
Commerce Extérieur de la France a remis leurs récompenses
aux lauréats du Grand Prix 2013 des VI (Volontaires
internationaux) d’Afrique de l’Est. C’est la troisième année
consécutive que se tenait cette compétition.
Le prix Or a été décerné à Laura LEFEVRE, VIE chez
Orange-Ouganda. Chef de projet
marketing, elle a conçu, mis en œuvre
et lancé avec succès plusieurs actions
clés, qui ont permis à son entreprise
d’améliorer sa performance en termes
de fidélisation et d’innovation.
Amine Adimi, qui a reçu le prix Argent,
est Ingénieur chez Total-Ethiopie, et
est chargé d’améliorer et de dynamiser
le processus de construction des
stations-services dans le pays. Il est en
poste depuis un an.
Aurélien Pugeaux est pour sa part
lauréat du prix Bronze. Il travaille pour
Technisem, une entreprise française
qui commercialise des semences
potagères pour les zones tropicales. Technisem n’est pas installée
au Kenya mais bien présente néanmoins grâce à un partenariat
avec une entreprise locale, SavanaSeeds. Aurélien a été envoyé
comme VIE au sein de cette structure pour l’accompagner dans
son développement commercial et sa gestion financière.
Ce Grand Prix Afrique de l’Est permet de récompenser à la fois
les jeunes VIA et VIE mais aussi leurs tuteurs qui les guident et
les forment durant leur séjour.

VI Awards
On the 23rd of May, under the auspices of the Ambassador
of France Mr. Etienne de PONCINS, the Kenyan section of
French Foreign Trade Advisors presented their awards to
the winners of the Grand Prix2013 des VI (International
Volunteers Awards) for the East African region. This is the
third consecutive year that the competition was held.
The Gold Award was awarded to Laura LEFEVRE, VIE
(International Volunteer for a private
company) at Orange Uganda. Heading
a marketing programme, she designed,
implemented and successfully
launched several key actions that
led her company to improve its
performance in terms of customer
fidelisation and innovation.
Amine Adimi who received the
Silver Award is an engineer at Total
Ethiopia, responsible for improving
and boosting the process of building
service stations in the country. He has
been there for one year.
Aurélien Pugeaux is the winner of
the Bronze award. He works for Technisem, a French company
that sells vegetable seeds for tropical regions. Technisemis
not established in Kenya but it is well represented through
a partnership with a local company, Savana Seeds. Aurelian
was sent as VIE within this structure to support its business
development and financial management.
This Grand Prix East Africa to reward both the young VIA and
VIE as well as their superiors who guide and train them during
their stay.

L’université Catholique d’Afrique de l’Est, l’université
d’Eldoret et l’université Joseph Fourier (Grenoble I) ont
organisé avec le soutien de l’Ambassade de France au Kenya
une semaine de conférences scientifiques à Eldoret dans le
cadre du projet de recherche ELEPHOX (ELEctrochemical
and PHOto Properties of Some
Remarkable Ruthenium and Iron
CompleXes). Le projet répond
à la volonté commune, initiée
en 2007, de valoriser la recherche
franco-kenyane en chimie quantique,
discipline assez peu développée à
ce jour dans le pays, notamment en
formant de jeunes chercheurs kenyans
(co-encadrement de doctorats).
Le Professeur de chimie théorique
Mark E. Casida de Grenoble I s’est
rendu à Eldoret du 3 au 12 mai 2013
afin de participer à cet évènement qui
s’adressait à une trentaine d’étudiants
de niveau licence, master et doctorat.
Après avoir co-dirigé de 2008 à 2012, la thèse du Dr Cleophas
Muhavini Wahire, enseignant à l’université Catholique d’Afrique
de l’Est, le Pr Casida s’est dit enchanté de revenir à Eldoret et de
mesurer l’engouement suscité par le projet de recherche auprès
des étudiants et des collègues enseignants. Ce projet s’inscrit
pleinement dans la politique menée par le Gouvernement
kenyan en faveur de la recherche et de l’enseignement supérieur
puisque ce dernier a lancé, début 2013, un programme de
soutien à la formation des maîtres de conférences (niveau
Masters et doctorat) en sciences appliquées et ingénierie.

The Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA), the University
of Eldoret and Joseph Fourier University (Grenoble I), with
the sponsorship of the Embassy of France to Kenya, organised
a one week scientific seminar in Eldoret, in the framework
of the ELEPHOX research project (ELEctrochemical and
PHOto Properties of Some
Remarkable Ruthenium and
Iron CompleXes). This project
symbolizes the partners’ desire to
promote and strengthen French-
Kenyan research in Quantum
Chemistry, a field which has not been
deeply developed in the country,
especially by training young Kenyan
lecturers (PhD co-supervision).
Professor of Quantum Chemistry
Mark E. Casida from Grenoble I was
in Eldoret from May 3rd to May 12th
2013 to participate in this seminar
aimed at an audience of about thirty
students at the undergraduate, Masters
and PhD levels. After having co-supervised from 2008 to 2012 the
PhD work of Dr. Cleophas Muhavini Wawire, lecturer at CUEA,
Prof. Casida expressed his delight at being back in Eldoret and
to see how motivated and committed the students and lecturers
were to make ELEPHOX a success. This project completely fits
within the objectives set by the Government of Kenya in favour
of higher education and research, as the Ministry of Higher
Education, Science and Technology launched in early 2013 a
training programme for universities teaching staff in engineering
and applied sciences (Masters and Doctorate levels).

Le 24 avril, 2013, le département du portefeuille de Proparco
à Paris, a effectué une mission de supervision du projet Rabai
Power, à Mombasa. Proparco, la filiale dédiée au secteur privé
du groupe AFD, participe, aux côtés du FMO, de la DEG et
d’EAIF, à hauteur de 22,6 M€ à un financement global de
84,6 M€ destiné à la construction
d’une centrale électrique au fuel
lourd à cycle combiné d’une
capacité de 90 MW située à Rabai, au
Kenya.Cette mission conjointe entre
Proparco et la DEG a permis aux
préteurs de confirmer les excellentes
données opérationnelles fournies
régulièrement par le client.La centrale
de Rabai Power bénéficie du meilleur
indice calorifique parmi les centrales
thermiques au Kenya, et d’un prix
du fuel /Kwh inférieur notamment
grâce à sa turbine à vapeur. Ainsi
Rabai Power est, depuis début 2013,
numéro 1 dans l’ordre de mérite de
KPLC parmi les centrales thermiques du pays. Depuis sa mise
en service en 2009, la production générée par ce quatrième
producteur indépendant d’électricité au Kenya, permet de
couvrir près de 8% de la demande du pays à un coût compétitif
par rapport notamment aux groupes thermiques d’urgence, et
de diminuer la dépendance de KPLC (l’offtaker) aux sources
hydroélectriques moins prévisibles. En combinaison avec les
autres producteurs indépendants d’électricité déjà opérationnels
ou en cours d’extension, Rabai Power a contribué à la prévention
d’ une crise énergétique au Kenya.
AFD
On April 24th, 2013, the portfolio department of Proparco
in Paris carried out a supervision mission of the Rabai Power
project in Mombasa. Proparco, the subsidiary of the AFD
dedicated to the private sector, is financing in collaboration
with FMO, DEG and EAIF, to an amount of 22,6M euros
in a global financing of 84,6M euros,
intended for the construction of
a power plant in the heavy fuel oil
cycle, combined by a capacity of 90MW
situated in Rabai, Kenya. This joint
mission between Proparco and DEG
provided the donors with an opportunity
to confirm the excellent operational data
supplied regularly by the client. The
Rabai power plant benefits from the best
calorific index (heat rate) as compared to
the other thermal power plants in Kenya,
and notably of a lower price of fuel oil
per kWh thanks to its steam turbine.
Rabai plant, since the beginning of 2013,
is therefore number 1 in the order of
merit of KPLC among the other thermal power plants in the
country. Since its inception in 2009, the production generated
by this fourth independent producer of electricity in Kenya,
covers about 8% of the demand of the country at a competitive
cost particularly in relation to the cost of the other thermal
groups, as well as decreasing the dependence of KPLC (the off
taker) to hydroelectric sources, which are less predictable. In
combination with the other independent electricity producers
already operational or in the process of extension, Rabai Power
has contributed to the prevention of an energy crisis in Kenya.

Un accord de coopération, Kenyatta University et UPPA
L’Université Kenyatta et l’UPPA ont signé, le 21 mai 2013,un
accord de coopération visant à renforcer leur collaboration.
L’accord prévoit des activités en faveur du développement
de la recherche scientifique et une mutualisation des
moyens dans les domaines de l’enseignement supérieur, de
la recherche et du renforcement
des capacités, dans des domaines
tels que l’agriculture, la biodiversité,
le patrimoine culturel, les politiques
de l’enseignement supérieur et les processus
de démocratisation en Afrique
de l’Est, la littérature et les langues
étrangères, l’éducation spécialisée.
Le Professeur David Bessières, Vice-
Président de l’UPPA, s’est rendu à Nairobi
pour la cérémonie de signature à
l’Université Kenyatta en présence de
SE l’Ambassadeur de France au Kenya,
Etienne de Poncins. Cette cérémonie a
été suivie d’un déjeuner à la Résidence
de France. La collaboration entre les
deux universités est ancienne. Des maîtres de conférences de
l’université Kenyatta ont bénéficié des bourses doctorales en
alternance du gouvernement français pour obtenir un double
diplôme de doctorat (Kenyatta/Pau) et ont développé de nombreux
partenariats scientifiques avec leurs pairs palois, aboutissant
à l’organisation de séminaires, conférences et à la production
de publications scientifiques communes.
MOU between Kenyatta University and UPPA
Kenyatta University and the University of Pau et des Pays de
l’Adour (UPPA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding
on May 21st 2013, aimed at strengthening their cooperation.
The MoU provides for the development of academic research
cooperation, the reinforcement of collaboration, mutual
assistance and capacity building in
diverse fields such as agriculture,
biodiversity, cultural heritage, higher
education policies and democratization
processes in East Africa, literature and
languages, special education. Professor
David Bessières, Vice-President of
UPPA, travelled from Pau to attend
the signing ceremony at Kenyatta
University in the presence of H.E
Etienne de Poncins, the Ambassador
of France to Kenya. This event was
marked by lunch at the Ambassador’s
residence. The collaboration between
Kenyatta University and UPPA started
many years ago. Lecturers from
Kenyatta University have benefitted from the joint scholarship
program run by the French government to obtain their PhD
diplomas at UPPA, and collaborated with lecturers, professors
and students from UPPA to organise joint seminars and
conferences and to produce collective scientific publications.

Mathemathic modelling for conservation
The 2009 scientific cooperation between the then Ministry
of Higher Education Science and Technology (MOHEST)
and the Institute of Research and Development (IRD)
identified applied-mathematics as an area of interest.
Victor Nyaliki Mose (photo ci-dessous) successfully
presented his PhD defense on 21st May 2013 at the Ecology
Lab, University of Pierre and Marie
Curie (UPMC) in Paris. Both Universities
supervised his PhD program. Dr. Pierre
Auger, Dr. Tri Nguyen Huu, and Prof.
Charles Nyandwi. The thesis was supported
by a scholarship from UPMC and IRD, in

The thesis was on mathematical modelling
on the dynamics of migration of large
herbivore populations in National Parks. The
effect of isolating the park from surrounding
ecosystems as a result of pressures such as
the spread of human activity, settlement and
land fragmentation are also tested.
Despite recent progress in the development
of mathematical models of migration,
few applications have been made for
conservation planning.
Most models also lack calibration and validation on data from
migration. Understanding the distribution and movements of
animals as resources is one of the biggest challenges in basic and
applied ecology. The uptake of such a model by conservation
managers could formulate conservation policies based on
the integrated knowledge to build scenarios to protect large
mammals, their environment and the activities of the locals.

Modélisation mathématique pour la préversation
SCAC
Depuis 2009, le MOHEST et l’IRD ont amorcé une
coopération scientifique qui a développé un programme de
mathématique appliquée entre les équipes des deux pays.
Victor Nyaliki Mose (picture below), a soutenu avec succès sa
thèse de doctorat, le 21 mai 2013, au Laboratoire d’Écologie,
Université de Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) à Paris. Son
programme de doctorat a été supervisé
par les deux Universités, le Dr. Pierre Auger,
le Dr. Tri Nguyen Huu et le Prof. Charles
Nyandwi. L’étude a été soutenue par une
bourse de l’UPMC et IRD, en collaboration
avec l’ACC (Dr. David Western) qui a permis
l’accès à 40 années de données d’observation.
La thèse portait sur la modélisation
mathématique de la dynamique des
migrations des populations de grands
herbivores dans les parcs nationaux. L’effet
d’isolation des parcs des écosystèmes
environnants, de pressions telles que la
croissance de la population humaine, la
sédentarisation et la fragmentation des
terres sont également testés. En dépit de
progrès récents dans le développement
de modèles mathématiques de migration,
peu d’applications ont été réalisées pour la
planification de la conservation. La plupart
des modèles manquent également de calibration et de validation
à partir des données de migration. Comprendre la distribution
et les déplacements des animaux en fonction des ressources est
l’un des plus grands défis en matière d’écologie fondamentale et
appliquée. Par l’assimilation des modèles développés, les acteurs
de la conservation pourraient formuler des politiques basées
sur ces connaissance intégrées, pour construire des scénario
destinés à protéger les grands mammifères, leur environnement
et les activités des populations locales.

NYROBI in Pictures: From a swamp to a capital city
Alliance Française of Nairobi will be presenting the
exhibition Nyrobi in Pictures: From a swamp to a capital city
from 5th June to 7th July. The exhibition retraces the history
of the city of Nairobi through historical
photographs from private collections
and the National Museums of Kenya as
well as recent photographs by Yasuyoshi
Chiba and Lydia W. Muthuma.
The exhibition will highlight the growth of
Nairobi from a papyrus swamp to present
day modern skyscraper city giving historical
and architectural information on the city’s
built heritage.
Put together by Lydia Muthuma, art
historian and Evelyne Wanjiku, historian, in
partnership with the Godown Art Centre.
the exhibition will be part of the ‘Nai ni Who’
Festival (10th may – 11th August 2013), a
three month festival taking place throughout
the city whereby different neighbourhood
zones will be celebrating and sharing their
uniqueness in this metropolis of diverse
cultures. The National Museums of Kenya
will also be introducing guided walking tours
in Nairobi’s Central Business Distric (CBD) on the history and
significance of various monuments within the CBD during this
period.
ALLIANCES FESTIVAL
Focus sur le patrimoine architectural de Nairobi
L’Alliance Française de Nairobi, en partenariat avec
l’Ambassade de France, l’Institut Français et l’IFRA Nairobi,
accueillera le premier d’une série de cinq cafés scientifiques
le 19 juin 2013 à 18 heures sur le thème « (Re)découvrir
le patrimoine architectural de Nairobi ». Chaque café
scientifique aura pour vocation d’inviter
un public varié à débattre, autour d’un
apéritif et dans une atmosphère conviviale et
informelle, de questions d’intérêt public en
présence de chercheurs spécialisés.
Ils permettront donc au public d’approfondir
leurs connaissances sur un sujet spécifique,
tout en mettant à l’honneur les partenariats
scientifiques franco-kenyans et leurs
résultats de recherche.
Alors que la croissance rapide de la
ville de Nairobi conduit parfois certains
promoteurs immobiliers à détruire de
vieux bâtiments porteurs d’histoire et de
mémoire pour ériger des immeubles locatifs
plus rentables, de nombreuses initiatives
– gouvernementales et privées – listent
et défendent les monuments historiques
de Nairobi, et cherchent à associer le plus
grand nombre à l’élaboration et à la mise en place de politiques
de gestion de la ville plus respectueuses de l’environnement et
de l’humain. Alors que la mise en place des nouvelles autorités
politiques suscite beaucoup d’espoir, ces initiatives arriverontelles
à faire prendre conscience de la richesse architecturale de
Nairobi et de l’importance de la protéger ? Venez en débattre
avec des universitaires, des professionnels et d’autres acteurs
défendant fièrement l’identité si particulière de Nairobi!
Nyrobi en images: D’un marécage à une capitale
L’Alliance Française de Nairobi accueillera, du 5 juin au
7 juillet 2013, l’exposition de photographies ‘NYROBY in
Picures: From a swamp to a capital city. Cette exposition
retracera l’histoire de la ville de Nairobi
par le biais de photographies anciennes
et modernes provenant des collections de
musées nationaux du Kenya, de collections
privées et de travaux de photographes
contemporains tels que Yasuyoshi Chiba
et Lydia W. Muthuma. L’exposition mettra
en avant les différentes étapes que la ville a
connue, depuis le marécage appelé ‘Nyrobi’
(fin du XIXème siècle) jusqu’à la métropole
que l’on connaît aujourd’hui.
Organisée par Lydia W. Muthuma,
historienne de l’art et Maitre de conférences
en Design Architectural, et Evelyne Wanjiku,
historienne en partenariat avec le Godown
Art Center, cette exposition fera partie du
festival ‘Nai ni Who’ (10 mai – 11 août 2013).
D’une durée de trois mois, ce festival prend
place dans différents parties de la ville de
Nairobi afin que tout les quartiers célèbrent
et partagent leurs singularités. Le National
Museum of Kenya organisera à cette occasion des visites guidées
du centre ville de Nairobi afin de faire découvrir l’histoire et la
signification de plusieurs monuments du CBD aux curieux.

Focus on Nairobi Architectural Heritage
Alliance Française of Nairobi – in partnership with the
French Embassy, Institut Français and IFRA Nairobi – will
host the first of a series of five Science Café on June 19th 2013
at 6 pm, on “(Re) discovering Nairobi Architectural Heritage”.
Each Science Café will aim at inviting an eclectic audience
to debate topics of public interest in the
presence of distinguished scientists,
sharing some refreshments while discussing
in an informal and friendly atmosphere. The
Cafés will therefore allow the audience to
deepen its knowledge on specific subjects
and contribute to publicise current scientific
partnerships between France and Kenya.
While the rapid growth of Nairobi city
sometimes drives developers to bring
down old – but full of history and memory
– buildings to construct new and highly
profitable middle-class housing estates,
many initiatives – carried out by public or
private institutions – have started listing and
defending historical monuments of Nairobi,
trying to associate as much people as possible
to the elaboration and implementation of
urban planning policies more respectful of
environment and individuals. While the new elected authorities
have raised people’s hopes and expectations, will these new
initiatives make people understand the richness of Nairobi’s
Architecture and the importance of protecting it? Come discuss
these issues with scholars, professionals and other organisations
involved in defending Nairobi’s strong and special identity!

Message du Consulat
Si vous quittez définitivement le Kenya cet été, il est
important d’en informer le consulat. En effet vous ne serez
radié du registre mondial des Français établis hors de France
que si vous en faîtes la demande.
Le consulat vous délivrera un certificat de changement de
résidence nécessaire pour votre déménagement ou pour la
constitution d’un dossier de demande d’échange d’un permis
de conduire obtenu au Kenya.
Le consulat vous indiquera également la procédure à suivre
pour votre enregistrement au registre mondial si vous êtes
affecté dans un nouveau poste à l’étranger.
Enfin, vous devez de façon concomitante demander votre
radiation de la liste électorale consulaire.
Le permis de conduire kenyan
Le permis de conduire français n’a aucune valeur au Kenya.
Il est préférable d’être titulaire d’un permis de conduire
international et de le transformer en un permis de conduire
kenyan dans les 3 mois après votre arrivée au Kenya.
NB : l’Ambassade n’est pas compétente en matière de permis
internationaux (prorogation, délivrance…). Ainsi, si votre
permis international arrive à expiration durant votre
séjour au Kenya, il vous faudra demander la délivrance
d’un nouveau permis auprès des autorités locales ou de
l’Automobile Association.
