Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own<br />

desire? <strong>The</strong>n would you be a guardian over him?<br />

{43} Or do you think that most of them hear or reason?<br />

<strong>The</strong>y are only like cattle; nay, they are even farther astray<br />

from the Path. {44} (Al-Furqan, 25:43–44).<br />

Animals serve the purpose for which they have been created.<br />

But those who have been created to worship God take<br />

their own ego as their master and worship themselves even<br />

though they have been given clear signs. This is where their<br />

‘hearing’ and ‘reasoning’ comes to no avail. 25 <strong>The</strong> Qur’an<br />

goes further and challenges those who claim to see and hear<br />

when in fact their conscience has been blinded:<br />

And among them are those who listen to you. But can<br />

you cause the deaf to hear, although they will not<br />

use reason? {42} And among them are those who look<br />

at you. But can you guide the blind although they will<br />

not [attempt to] see? {43} Indeed, God does not wrong<br />

the people at all, but it is the people who are wronging<br />

themselves. {44} (Yunus, 10:42–44).<br />

And We have certainly created for Hell many of the<br />

jinn and mankind. <strong>The</strong>y have hearts with which<br />
