Established in 1973, <strong>the</strong> Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) is a Commonwealth<br />

statutory authority that operates under <strong>the</strong> Criminology Research Act 1971.<br />

Mission<br />

The functions of <strong>the</strong> AIC include:<br />

• Con<strong>du</strong>cting criminological research<br />

• Communicating <strong>the</strong> results of research<br />

• Con<strong>du</strong>cting or arranging conferences and seminars<br />

• Publishing material arising out of <strong>the</strong> AIC's work<br />

Activités<br />

• Research: publications tackling drugs and crime, indigenous issues, violent crime,<br />

crime prevention, fraud, human trafficking and high tech crime; organizing conferences<br />

and roundtab<strong>les</strong><br />

• Monitoring programs that collect <strong>the</strong> basic data that are vital <strong>for</strong> policy makers to<br />

manage, evaluate and respond effectively and efficiently to crime problems.<br />
