Michael Stein s’installent THE ART en DAILY France, ils NEWS deviennent
germanique.
R.A. La question du cabinet semble précisément vous
relier...
Maintenant, je me rends compte
anti-moderniste.
ennuyeux.
T.O. Je suis quelqu’un
de religieux, je sais que
le temps qui me reste est
Photo Bernd Borchardt
L’institution new-yorkaise a
Mennour. De son côté, Yona Friedman précise : « Avec Kamel
Mennour, mon contrat se terminait le 15 octobre. Mais la suite
est ouverte ! ». ❚ A. C.
The collector’s role is paramount
As can be seen in the exhibition at the Grand Palais (until
January 16 th ), when Gertrude, Leo and Michael Stein settled
in France at the turn of the 20 th century, they became Picasso
and Matisse’s patrons, buying the artists’ first works. Does this
avant-garde mentality and intellectual complicity between collectors
and artists still live on today? Françoise and Jean-Philippe
Billarant have opened a magnificent private museum, ‘Le Silo’
located in Marines (95) at the heart of ‘le Vexin’ an area of
outstanding natural beauty. They consider that their approach to
collecting is close to that of the Steins: “A desire to live fully with
one’s times, to be extremely close to the artists, dialoguing frequently
with them about their works and art history, supporting and accompanying
them on a long-term basis.” For some collectors, this
support means commissioning, lending and exhibiting works
of art. Michel Poitevin, also a collector, doesn’t believe that the
collector’s mindset has fundamentally changed since the time
of the Steins. However, he says: “A collector’s outlook may not have
changed, but the times have. The Steins’ sphere of influence and intervention
was limited to Paris, which was at that time the uncontested
capital of art. There was an obvious notion of unity of place. Today if
you want to try and see even a fraction of the multitude of creations,
you have to travel around going from fairs to biennials and from
galleries to auctions.” Florence and Daniel Guerlain are in complete
agreement: “The Steins collected the work of just a few artists,
whom they socialised with regularly. Today, you don’t need to know
artists to like their work.” The general opinion is that for some
purchasers, the commercial side to the art market has become
pre-eminent, to the extent that it even tarnishes the reputation
of collectors. “What has undoubtedly changed in recent history is
that collections have become a sort of leverage to gain recognition
of one’s position in society, or even worse a mean to increase one’s
wealth through speculation. In our opinion, these kinds of collector
are subverting what could be the true role of a collector: a humanist
participating in the great leap forward that is art history”, deplore
Josée and Marc Gensollen from Marseille.
In spite of the perverse effects of the art market, the collector
is still a discoverer who often spots talent before it is officially
recognised by art institutions… and sometimes even
before galleries. The collector helps artists to make a name for
themselves and allows them to live from their art. “The collector
is a defender and an amplifier”, observes Henri Griffon another
collector, who for his part is an unconditional defender of the
work of Hervé Télémaque. Isabelle and Jean-Conrad Lemaître
have a real passion for video art and start searching for talent
amongst the students in art schools, even if they mainly buy
from galleries. “We often invite them to our house. We have created
a prize, ‘StudioCollector’, and a festival, ‘Video vidéo’. We are against
the notion that a collector holds on and takes possession, we feel our
role is to transmit”, explains Isabelle Lemaître. In the opinion of
Sandra Mulliez: “Even a recognised artist can have ups and downs.
The collector should be there to help and not just from a financial
point of view. If the collector becomes an artist’s patron, he / she
participates at every level: production, editing the catalogue, creating
networks, helping a young artist to find a gallery… There are thousands
of ways to help but unfortunately not thousands of people who
do help…” Some, like Michel Fedoroff, refuse the term ‘patron’.
“I don’t feel that corresponds to who I am, although it is always a
pleasure to be able to participate in an artist’s development.” Nadia
Candet insists that, even if the context has evolved over the
last century, the role of the collector remains paramount in
the artistic chain. In conclusion, in Michel Poitevin’s words of
wisdom: “There is no market without consumers and no creation
without the act of purchasing.” ❚

Yona Friedman
scatters his models
CORNETTE DE SAINT CYR
DROUOT MONTAIGNE / AT 7.30 THIS EVENING
Yona Friedman certainly seems to be busy.
The artist and architect is currently participating
in ‘Wander, Labyrinthine Variations’, a group
exhibition at the Centre Pompidou-Metz, but
he’s also at the 11th Biennale de Lyon and in
a joint exhibition in collaboration with Jean-
Baptiste Decavèle at Galerie Anne Barrault
(Paris). An accolade for this 88-year-old artist of
Hungarian origin, who settled in Paris in 1957.
This evening at the contemporary art auction
organised during FIAC by Cornette de Saint Cyr,
he is putting up for sale a collection of works
from his studio. “Pierre Cornette de Saint Cyr
already auctioned Yona Friedman’s work some thirty years ago”,
explains Stéphane Corréard, the director of the auction house’s
contemporary art department.
These incredibly poetic models, made from odds and ends,
crystallise the architect’s theories in favour of the ‘Spatial City’
and light, mobile constructions. Thanks to the support of such
well-established personalities as the curator Hans Ulrich Obrist
or Daniel Birnbaum, the current director of Stockholm’s
Yona Friedman, model (detail).
Moderna Museet, Yona Friedman’s oeuvre
enjoys the recognition of art institutions both
in France and abroad. MoMA’s Department
of Architecture will probably be bidding on a
model from 1958, Spatial City (10,000-15,000
Euro). Bridges of Shanghai, seven ‘pre-studies’
for models intended for Shanghai’s ‘Museum
of Architecture’, are even expected to reach
between 60,000 and 80,000 Euros.
The announcement of tonight’s sale wasn’t to
everyone’s liking, in fact it made Kamel Mennour’s
hackles rise. The gallerist has worked
extremely hard to promote Yona Friedman
over the last five years and he is adamant: “A sale like this spoils
forty years of Yona’s work and five years of mine by his side.” Yona
Friedman answers: “My contract with Kamel Mennour ended on
October 15th, but in the future anything can still happen!” ❚ A. C.
INTERVIEW
THE ART DAILY NEWS / ISSUE 11 / SATURDAY 22ND AND SUNDAY 23RD OCTOBER 2011
12
“We cross history
in the same way.”
THOMAS OLBRICHT AND ANTOINE DE GALBERT, COLLECTORS
A conversation with Thomas Olbricht
and Antoine de Galbert at the occasion of
‘Memories of Future’ showing at La Maison
Rouge.
R.A. Why did you choose to present each
other’s collections in your respective exhibition
spaces in Berlin and Paris?
T.O. It must be around ten years ago that I
first met Antoine when he was setting up his
foundation. He wanted to show private collections.
When I began to create a museum
to house my collection, I also wanted to show
other collections. You could say I am following
in Antoine’s footsteps! My exhibition in
Antoine’s La Maison Rouge is the first time I
have shown my collection in a non Germanspeaking
country.
A.G. First we decided to host Thomas’s collection
and then came the idea for the ‘All
Cannibals?’ exhibition in Berlin. The two exhibitions
are different in format: there are more works
in Thomas’s exhibition at La Maison Rouge. The fact
that his collection develops the cabinet of curiosities
theme was decisive in my choice.
R.A. And this theme is precisely your common
ground…
T.O. When we first met, I thought that Antoine only
Laurent Grasso, Memories of the Future, 2010, neon,
plexiglas box,cretificate neon, 4x60cm, box 50x74x42cm
collected contemporary art. Now I realise that we cross
history in the same way.
A.G. We are trying to re-establish a connection between
contemporary art and its roots. In Thomas’s collection,
there are a lot of references
to figurative art, which is both a
trendy and yet a very anti-modernist
stance.
R.A. You have another point in
common: death is omnipresent in
your collections.
T.O. I am a religious person. I know
that I won’t live forever; moreover
I saw death close at hand as a doctor.
You could say that death is no
stranger to me.
A.G. What interests me more is the
idea of death, how it is portrayed
and the history of funeral rites. ❚
