Mrs. Legge celebrated her birthday on January 27.<strong>The</strong> Treasurer advised that he had delivered the two-year report on paralegal regulationto the Attorney General.<strong>The</strong> Treasurer announced that <strong>Convocation</strong> and Committees would not meet in March.<strong>The</strong> Treasurer acknowledged the generosity <strong>of</strong> the Honourable Ian Cartwright and hiswife, Pat Cartwright, for their donation <strong>of</strong> $l,000,000 to the Association in Defence <strong>of</strong> theWrongfully Convicted. <strong>The</strong> Treasurer also acknowledged and thanked Paul Pape and HarveyStrosberg and their firms, Richard Meretsky and the Bank <strong>of</strong> Nova Scotia for the cy-prespayment <strong>of</strong> $l,000,000 to the <strong>Law</strong> <strong>Society</strong> Foundation for use by it for the <strong>Law</strong>yers’ Feed theHungry Program at Osgoode Hall.3

Re: Expansion <strong>of</strong> the Summary Hearing ProcessIt was moved by Ms. Rothstein, seconded by Mr. Hainey, that <strong>Convocation</strong> approve anexpansion <strong>of</strong> the summary hearing process to include the following new case types on the basis<strong>of</strong> grounds currently permitted by Ontario Regulation 167/07:a. <strong>The</strong> practise <strong>of</strong> law in Ontario by a lawyer whose license is suspended;b. <strong>The</strong> provision <strong>of</strong> legal services in Ontario by a paralegal whose license issuspended;c. Breach <strong>of</strong> an undertaking to the <strong>Law</strong> <strong>Society</strong>;d. BY-LAWS MADE UNDERSUBSECTIONS 62 (0.1) AND (1) OF THE LAW SOCIETY ACTBY-LAW 4[LICENSING]THAT By-<strong>Law</strong> 4 [Licensing], made by <strong>Convocation</strong> on May 1, 2007 and amended on May 25,2007, June 28, 2007, September 20, 2007, January 24, 2008, April 24, 2008, May 22, 2008,and June 26, 2008 be further amended as follows:1. Subparagraph 1 i <strong>of</strong> subsection 9 (1) <strong>of</strong> By-<strong>Law</strong> 4 is amended by adding “or jurisdoctor/ ou un doctorat” after “bachelor <strong>of</strong> laws/ baccalauréat” and before “degree from alaw school/ en droit”.2. Paragraph 3 <strong>of</strong> subsection 9 (1) <strong>of</strong> the By-<strong>Law</strong> is revoked.3. 12. <strong>The</strong> By-<strong>Law</strong> is amended by striking out the heading “SURRENDER OF LICENCETO PRACTISE LAW/ REMISE DU PERMIS D’EXERCICE DU DROIT” before section 23.13. Subsection 23 (1) <strong>of</strong> the By-<strong>Law</strong> is amended by striking out “to practise law inOntario as a barrister and solicitor/ d’exercer le droit en Ontario à titre d’avocat oud’avocate”.14. Clause 23 (2) (a) <strong>of</strong> the By-<strong>Law</strong> is amended by striking out “to practise law inOntario as a barrister and solicitor/ d’exercer le droit en Ontario à titre d’avocat oud’avocate” and by adding “or provided legal services in Ontario/ ou fourni des servicesjuridiques en Ontario” after “that the applicant has practiced law in Ontario/ pendantlesquelles le requérant ou la requérante a exercé le droit en Ontario” and before “and thereasons why the applicant/ , le cas échéant,”.15. Paragraph 4 <strong>of</strong> subsection 23 (1) <strong>of</strong> the By-<strong>Law</strong> is amended by adding “other thana financial institution, public body or reporting issuer,/ qui n’est ni un établissementfinancier, ni un organisme public ni un émetteur assujetti” after “organization/organisme”.15. Subsection 23 (3) <strong>of</strong> the French version <strong>of</strong> the By-<strong>Law</strong> is amended by striking out“s’ils se sont déjà conformés” and substituting “si eux-mêmes et tout tiers qui est leurmandataire dans le cadre du paragraphe (2.1) se sont déjà conformés”.22.
