125ème anniversaire - Le Rosey

On the academic front, 2003-4was a year to remember. Five yearsago, two crucial decisions weretaken, and this was the year toevaluate their success :1.The creation of a “Bilingual Section” forclasses 10 to 4 (grades 2 to 8). Le Roseyhas always been a bilingual school, but thereform undertaken in 2000 did away with thetwo “sides” and instead allowed students tomove from classes in one language to theother. Now, the first of the bilingual cohorthas moved into the last two years of schoolingand it was time to take stock. An in-depthstudy suggested that the experiment was agreat success : English-speaking studentsstudied subjects in French, French-speakingstudents performed particularly well intheir IGCSEs, and the French-speaking IB isa reality for Rosey students.This is surely thefoundation for an increasingly bilingual future– and the finishing touches are being addedto a new Rosey bilingual system for 2005onwards.Et l’avenir consiste à étendre ce programme,qui fonctionne de la 10 e à la 4 e , dans lesclasses de 3 e et 2 e à partir de septembre2005. Ofthese, over 60% were bilingual diplomas. TheIB is increasingly seen across the world as ahallmark of educational excellence, and ourpolicy of the “IB diploma for all” confirms LeRosey’s commitment to the highest academicexpectations, showing that academic excellencecan accompany a broad and demandingtimetable of sporting and extra-curricularactivities. So, while we are justifiably proud ofthis success, it also underlines our belief in arounded Rosey education.En outre, pour la 6 ème fois depuis 1998, lesRoséens obtiennent 100% de réussite aubaccalauréat français. This year’s class terminal isvery aware of the competition and we lookforward to acceptances at the same level aslast year’s class. There are five applicants forOxford and Cambridge and nine applicants forearly action / decision in the US.

Marvellous performance of Ionesco’s “Rhinoceros” by the French-speaking drama group.Le Rosey’s choir and orchestra (over 130 pupils) entertain 800 spectators at the Christmas concert with their performance of Handel’s “Messiah”.Swiss skiing champion,Michael von Grunigen, signsLe Rosey students’ helmetsbefore races get underway :and it is to bring them lucksince they win 11 team cups,well ahead of other SwissRomande teams.

Le Rosey teams are interschool champions of basketball (senior and “moyen” boys), hockey (senior girls and “moyen” boys), badminton (seniorboys), skiing (senior and “moyenne” girls, senior boys and juniors), swimming (“moyen” boys), tennis (senior boys), and horse-riding (girls). Le Roseyremains the only school to participate in all sporting competitions.There has been plenty to sing about in the past year, musically speaking ! Very positive results and greatly increased participation : it is an arduous journey from being ableto make a few low groans to performing one of the great choral masterworks of the baroque era ! Thus, the Fête de Noël 03 culminated with vocal soloists, a choir of eightystudents and the orchestra performing the Christmas Music from Handel’s “Messiah”. There hardly exists music that is more inspirational than this, and the students gavetheir all to produce a truly emotional and uplifting performance, and a treasured memory. As well as the many ensembles (flutes, clarinets, guitars, violins, voices, trumpets,percussion...) we had some fine soloists : to fit everything into one concert at Christmas is becoming just about impossible !Fortunately, there are other opportunities, and the Charity Gala in Gstaad is one of the best. This year’s went with a swing – the juniors singing and dancing, the jazzgroup (“It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing”), comedy from the theatre group, and the choir in Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”.At Graduation the new amphitheatre was the scene for our production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “SouthPacific”. Here was a superb opportunity for new talents to discover themselves : actors, actresses, singers, dancers,musicians and backstage crew alike, the students performed wonderfully. The true stars were the two choruses; thegirls as nurses, led by the tireless Alexandra, and the boys as sailors and marines... Who will ever forget their hilariousrendition of “Nothing Like a Dame” ?

Tousles défis relevés avec succès donnent droit à une mentionspéciale dans le curriculum vitae, qui est le relevé de toutesles activités intellectuelles, artistiques, sportives, humainesde la vie roséenne de chaque élève, et à la participation autirage au sort de deux magnifiques montres Bovet à l’occasionde la fête de fin d’année. Before, I was working at Aiglon College, inVillars, as a nurse. But there was also another nurse who had been therefor a long time and was going to stay there until she retired. In fact, Rosey is as strict as Aiglon. I was impressed bythe campuses, in Rolle and in Gstaad, and I enjoyed being near the lakeand near Geneva and Lausanne. I appreciate that in Rosey, we speak moreFrench : it is more bilingual than Aiglon and less British. I work harder here,but the injuries are the same !
