NewsSix <strong>commissionaires</strong> <strong>meet</strong> <strong>Her</strong> Majesty, The Queenat UK Corps 150 th AnniversaryIn June 2009, six Canadian <strong>commissionaires</strong> from acrossthe country met <strong>Her</strong> Majesty, The Queen <strong>and</strong> His RoyalHighness The Duke of Edinburgh as part of celebrating the150 th anniversary of the creation of the Corps ofCommissionaires in Engl<strong>and</strong> in 1859. The Canadi<strong>and</strong>elegation joined <strong>other</strong> Commissionaires’ organizations fromas far away as Papua New Guinea <strong>and</strong> Australia. <strong>Her</strong>Majesty, The Queen <strong>and</strong> HRH The Duke of Edinburghinspected a specially selected group of <strong>commissionaires</strong> whoformed a 48 strong Guard of Honour at the event, then theymoved on to greet guests <strong>and</strong> staff in attendance.All six of the Canadian <strong>commissionaires</strong> presented to <strong>Her</strong>Majesty are decorated veterans of the Canadian Forces withexemplary service records. They are: John Lorne McIntoshof Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; Raymond Bernier of Montréal,Québec; <strong>Wayne</strong> <strong>Doucette</strong> of Ottawa, Ontario; Scott Harrisof Toronto, Ontario; Wesley Kopp of Regina, Saskatchewan;<strong>and</strong>, George Vondrasek of Victoria, British Columbia.<strong>Her</strong> Majesty is the Chief Life Governor of The Corps ofCommissionaires continuing a tradition dating back to 1901<strong>and</strong> the reign of King Edward VII.Profile of <strong>Cmre</strong> <strong>Wayne</strong> <strong>Doucette</strong>, Commissionaires Ottawa<strong>Cmre</strong> <strong>Wayne</strong> <strong>Doucette</strong> served 24 years in the CanadianForces <strong>and</strong> four years in the Reserves. During his militarycareer, he was deployed as a radio operator on multiple tours– to Germany (NATO, 1 tour), Egypt (Canadian ContingentUnited Nations Middle East, 1 tour), Lebanon (UnitedNations Interim Force in Lebanon, 1 tour), Golan Heights inIsrael <strong>and</strong> Syria (United Nations Disengagement ObserverForce, 3 tours) <strong>and</strong> Cyprus (United Nations Force in Cyprus,4 tours). He has also received the Canadian ForcesDecoration with the clasp, the Special Service Medal <strong>and</strong> theCanadian Peacekeeping Service Medal.<strong>Cmre</strong> <strong>Doucette</strong> was inspired by his stepfather, a WWIIveteran <strong>and</strong> former commissionaire of more than 20 years,to launch a second career as a private security professionalat Commissionaires Ottawa. Over the years, he has beenposted at the RCMP (6 years), Revenue Canada Agency (6years) <strong>and</strong> Emergency Measures Organization (2 years).Since 2004, he has been providing access control at IndustryCanada. He is also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion(19 years), the Canadian Association of Veterans in UnitedNations Peacekeeping, Ottawa Chapter (16 years) <strong>and</strong> a lifemember of the Signallers Club of Canada (since 1990).This will be the second time that <strong>Cmre</strong> <strong>Doucette</strong> has hadthe honour of being in <strong>Her</strong> Majesty’s presence. Back whenhe was a 15-year-old Boy Scout, he served as a Guard ofHonour at the front gate of the Lieutenant Governor of PrinceEdward Isl<strong>and</strong>’s mansion during a Royal Visit.<strong>Cmre</strong> <strong>Wayne</strong> <strong>Doucette</strong> said, “I was deeply honoured tohave been selected to make this wonderful journey to Londonto <strong>meet</strong> <strong>Her</strong> Majesty, The Queen.
