KENYA HO-YOU-FAT, DEDICATION AND DETERMINATION
Sport stratégique,
le golf attire de plus
en plus d’adeptes.
Notamment en Caraïbe,
il réunit chaque année
davantage de jeunes
espoirs.
Entrevue avec Kenya
Ho-You-Fat, recrue
montante de la Guyane.
Golf is attracting
younger athletes and
a number of new talents
are from the Caribbean.
French Guianan Kenya
Ho-You-Fat is one golfer
to watch.
~ D’ici l’an prochain, Kenya, suivie
A Golfer with Drive ~ Kenya Ho-You-Fat may look like your
typical, shy 17-year-old. But don’t be fooled. Underneath the easy smile
is a steely determination to become a professional golfer. Kenya first
came to the game at the age of 6. Her mother, Lynda, thought it could
help Kenya channel her excess energy. Golf quickly became her passion.
After winning the 2013-2014 Women’s Golf Championship in French
Guiana, Kenya decided she wanted to pursue a professional career.
This past year, she made a big change: “I left Cayenne for Guadeloupe
so that I could continue going to school while training.” Kenya lives
with a host family and has a special school schedule that allows her to
play 3 afternoons a week at the Golf Club of Abymes. She also plays
on the weekends at Golf International de Saint-François. It’s a strong
sign of commitment from such a young player. “She’s more determined
than ever,” says Lynda. “It’s a sacrifice not see each other all the time.
But I know she’ll succeed.” With solid support from her coach, Hubert
Prot, her training team, and family and friends, Kenya is working hard
to achieve her dream. “I’ve grown a lot. I’ve become more independent
and stronger -qualities that are useful in life, but also in competition!”
Green Means Go ~ Those qualities are already helping Kenya. At
an early tournament in 2015, Kenya ranked 6 th among amateurs at the
Mauritius Golf Masters. This past summer, Kenya played at number
of tournaments in the Caribbean with excellent results: she ranked 1 st
in Barbados and Guadeloupe, 3 rd in Trinidad. She then continued with
the French Golf Federation’s Grands Prix tournaments, including the
junior championship at Wimereux, ranking 2 nd at Golf de Béthemont
and at Golf de Gap. Most recently, she ranked 9 th at the Mauritius Golf
Master and 1st at the Eastern Caribbean Golf Association hosted in
Sainte-Croix. Her performance has pushed her up national rankings to
14 th among 692 junior players ranked.
Looking Ahead ~ A year from now Kenya can join CREPS, a
specialized post-secondary institution for elite athletes in Guadeloupe,
taking with her the goal of joining France’s national team and going to
the 2020 Olympics.
