FOREWORD
Upon his arrival in France in 1988, Feng Xiao-Min is struck by the vivid palettes of Western artists. Coming from China,
where Modern art has strayed from colourful approaches, he still remembers: “although my blood is filled with the
spirit and rhythm of Chinese painting and lines, I was most struck by the colours in Western painting”. Working with
colours thus becomes an integral part of his creation.
Gazing at an artwork by Feng Xiao-Min is entering one’s own world, where time stands still yet accelerates, where a
nostalgia for an unknown past emerges and where light transforms, coats and builds his Compositions.
To celebrate his first Parisian solo exhibition at Opera Gallery, the artist features a unique selection of twenty-four
paintings, created especially for the occasion. The ensemble resonates as an illuminated introspection onto recent
events.
Feng Xiao-Min’s systematised titles allow a total, unbiased immersion at the heart of light, of emotion, and of composition.
The artist’s signature abstract style varies in hues yet is centred around one permanent feature: an excellent master
of harmony and balance, coming from his training as a calligrapher.
Opera Gallery Paris is thrilled to present this exhibition where Feng Xiao-Min surprises us with his ambition: for the
first time, he ventures into greater formats, spread over several canvasses. More than an invitation to travel, these
new Compositions are a true dive into these lands of perpetual movement and overflowing light.
