Foreword<br />
<strong>Marcello</strong> <strong>Lo</strong> <strong>Giudice</strong> is a leading contemporary Italian artist whose work focuses on<br />
recurrent affinity between human and material. He is considered as one <strong>of</strong> the most<br />
innovative artists in the second wave <strong>of</strong> the European Art Informel movement and his<br />
rich and textured telluric work has been acclaimed by critics. Based on his geological<br />
knowledge, the artist developed his own unique style and paints organic landscapes.<br />
<strong>Opera</strong> <strong>Gallery</strong> is pleased to present <strong>Colours</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Eden</strong>, the first solo exhibition in Korea<br />
by renowned Italian monochrome artist <strong>Marcello</strong> <strong>Lo</strong> <strong>Giudice</strong>.<br />
Many artists have academic backgrounds in diverse fields and it influences their<br />
approach to work and artistic style significantly. <strong>Marcello</strong> <strong>Lo</strong> <strong>Giudice</strong> studied geology<br />
at the University <strong>of</strong> Bologna. He gained broad knowledge and deep understanding<br />
in soil and nature and mineralogy, and the concept <strong>of</strong> planet forces in particular<br />
inspired him immensely.<br />
The artist uses his knowledge <strong>of</strong> planet Earth as well as his passion for organic<br />
and geologic elements to create vibrant and dynamic paintings that are covered in<br />
a variety <strong>of</strong> colours and thick layers <strong>of</strong> paint. During different stages <strong>of</strong> drying, his<br />
technique provides a solid textured surface that forms subtle and beautiful interlaced<br />
designs. <strong>Marcello</strong> <strong>Lo</strong> <strong>Giudice</strong>’s monochrome paintings are the result <strong>of</strong> experiments<br />
with chemical reactions between colour and medium: they are murky yet clear, and<br />
as dark as soil but glows exquisitely. The overlaid media on his canvas disappear and<br />
reappear on the surface through various stages that involve overlaying, scratching,<br />
scraping and leveling. Once the surface has dried, his masterfully rendered media<br />
are given a new life and a new meaning in his work.<br />
His abstract paintings, which depict nature as seen from above, reconstruct our<br />
planet Earth in his own distinctive style. In the shadow casted by the dried painting<br />
pigment, incredible images <strong>of</strong> nature such as mountains, rivers, lakes, deserts and<br />
volcanoes can be found. The artist depicts his own perception <strong>of</strong> ‘<strong>Eden</strong>’ as a pure and<br />
unpolluted paradise, untouched by human hands. In his painting, he uses formative<br />
language to enhance visual and poetic effects <strong>of</strong> the natural world which cannot be<br />
fully portrayed in engineering, architecture or other artificial faculties.<br />
<strong>Opera</strong> <strong>Gallery</strong> presents a new aesthetic <strong>of</strong> Italian monochrome and invites you to see<br />
<strong>Marcello</strong> <strong>Lo</strong> <strong>Giudice</strong>’s work which honours and explores the beauty <strong>of</strong> the mother<br />
Earth and the importance <strong>of</strong> preserving it for future generations.<br />

물결에서 가장 혁신적인 예술가 중 한 명으로 간주되며 풍부하고 질감이 있는 "텔루릭(telluric)"<br />
작품으로 비평가들의 찬사를 받았습니다. 오페라 갤러리는 지질학에 대한 지식을 바탕으로<br />
독특한 스타일을 개발하여 유기적 지상 풍경화를 그리고 있는 이탈리아 모노크롬 회화의 대표<br />
예술가 마르셀로 로 기우디체의 국내 첫번째 개인전 을 선보입니다.<br />
많은 예술가들은 다양한 분야의 학문적 배경을 가지고 있으며, 이는 그들의 작품 스타일과<br />
접근 방식에 큰 영향을 미칩니다. 작가 마르셀로 로 기우디체는 볼로냐 대학에서 지질학을<br />
공부했습니다. 따라서 토양과 주변 자연에 대한 깊은 지식과 호기심을 갖게 되었고, 광물학,<br />
행성을 구성하는 힘 등의 개념은 그에게 엄청난 영감의 원천이 되었습니다.<br />
작가는 지구 환경에 대한 자신의 지식과 유기적, 지질학적 물질에 대한 깊은 애정을 결합하여<br />
캔버스에 다채로운 색상의 안료를 두껍게 펴고 레이어링하여 생생하고 활기찬 그림을 만듭니다.<br />
이 기술은 다양한 건조 단계에서 미묘하고 강력한 아름다운 인터레이스 디자인(interlaced<br />
design)을 형성하는 견고한 촉각 표면을 만듭니다. 색과 매체의 화학 작용을 자유자재로 실험한<br />
결과물인 마르셀로 로 기우디체의 모노크롬 회화들은 탁하면서도 선명하고, 흙 같이 어두우나<br />
동시에 화려한 빛을 뿜어 내고 있습니다. 캔버스 위의 재료들은 서로 겹쳐진 상태로 형태가<br />
없어지다가 긁힘, 삭제, 마모, 평탄화 등 여러 단계의 작업을 거쳐 표면 위에 나타나고, 여러 단계의<br />
작업을 거쳐 재료들을 말리면 작품은 절제된 화폭으로 심오한 뜻을 갖고 새롭게 탄생합니다.<br />
작품은 위에서 본 자연의 이미지를 담고 있으며 그의 그림은 추상적이고 동시에 우리 행성을<br />
독특한 방식으로 재현해 내고 있습니다. 건조 안료에 의해 생성된 그림자에서 산, 강, 호수, 사막<br />
및 화산과 같은 경이로운 자연의 이미지를 볼 수 있습니다. 작가는 ‘에덴(<strong>Eden</strong>)’에 대한 자신의<br />
개념을 인간의 손이 아직 닿지 않은 순수하고 오염되지 않은 낙원으로 표현합니다. 그의 그림은<br />
공학, 건축 및 기타 인공 능력으로는 그 아름다움을 드러낼 수 없는 자연 세계를 시각적, 시적<br />
효과를 극대화한 조형 언어로 보여줍니다.<br />
