since 1949, the montGenèvre mountain pass, Between france and
itaLy, is the scene of severaL paGes of worLd cycLinG history, witness
to the rise of BartaLi, coppi, zoetemeLk and virenque on the famous
tour de france.
The Montgenèvre pass isn’t one of the most
prestigious mountain passes in the cycling world,
“but nevertheless a good little climb,” exclaims
Thierry Mathé, an experienced local young athlete.
Culminating at 1850 metres, it is classified as
category one or two, on a scale of four.
Two editions of the Tour de France on the
Montgenèvre pass remain extremely memorable:
In 1976, the village resort becomes an overnight
stop on the Tour. That particular year a
Dutchman, Joop Zoetemelk, rode to victory in
the last mile, breaking away from Lucien Van
Impe. The Belgian competitor won the Tour that
year, but Joop Zoetemelk received a very nice
consolation prize: an apartment in resort! Today
the champion and his family still regularly visit
Montgenèvre.
The second milestone year was 1996, when the
mountain pass was crossed twice, on both the 8th
and 9th of July. The first day, the weather was so
bad that the pack could only race from Monêtier,

instead of the official course from Val d’Isère to
Sestrières in Italy. The Montgenèvre pass in a snow
storm presented the only real difficulty on the Tour
that year!
Finally, last summer, the 17 th stage of the Tour
de France, from Gap to Pinerolo was marked by
an 11 km to the Montgenèvre Pass, crossed by the
leading French rider Sylvain Chavanel. A great
occasion for a party!
Montgenèvre is also the training base for the
AG2R cycling team that prepare here for the
alpine stages of the Tour de France and the
Dauphine Libere. But for cyclists in the village,
the Montgenèvre mountain pass is simply a way
back home, a gateway that has since become an
informal and friendly competition between La
Vachette and the Pass. The road itself is pleasant
off-season or in early morning, when not too busy.
This aerial route, overlooking the Clarée Valley,
offers magnificent views and sometimes the smell of
the larch wood warmed by the sun.

Non il colle più prestigioso del ciclismo ma si tratta sempre di
una piccola salita, commenta Thierry Mathé, giovane sportivo
di Monginevro. Mentre il colle del Galibier ha segnato gli
esordi della Grande Boucle nel 1911, seguita nel 1922 da
quella dell’Izoard, il colle del Monginevro ha visto il passaggio
del gruppo solo nel 1949 con Gino Bartali in testa.
Il colle del Monginevro resta nei ricordi per due edizioni.1976
: la stazione diventa arrivo di tappa. Un olandese,
Joop Zoetemelk, vince davanti a Lucien Van Impe.
Secondo anno importante : 1996, il colle del Monginevro é
scalato due volte, l’8 e il 9 Luglio.
Infine la scorsa estate il Briançonnais ha avuto un altro incontro
con il Tour per 3 giorni.
Monginevro é anche sede degli allenamenti della squadra
AG2R-La Mondiale, che viene a testare l’altitudine per
prepararsi alle tappe di montagna del Tour de France o del
Dauphiné Libéré. Cyril Charlot, che si difende bene per essere
un neofita, ricorda :« li ho accompagnati nell’ascesa dell’Izoard
dove ho constatato la differenza : loro salivano tranquillamente,
mentre noi eravamo sfiniti», e ridendo dice « ho fatto
lo stesso tempo di Jeannie Longo sul colle del Granon! ». Del
ciclismo, questo normando di origine, non conosceva altro che
la sua versione urbana nelle strade di Parigi : la bicicletta.
Ha comprato la sua prima bicicletta da strada nel 2009, all’
arrivo a Monginevro e poi non l’ha più lasciata. Il colle del
Monginevro ? Per i ciclisti del paese é semplicemente la strada
per il ritorno a casa, passaggio obbligato che si trasforma in
una competizione amichevole e informale.
Un percorso in famiglia
L’ itinerario comincia agli alberts, segue la strada della
vallata fino a névache. si puo continuare oltre, verso
gli chalet Laval, ma la pendenza é ancora più forte. « a
névache, a lato della chiesa c’é una panetteria/salone
da the dove ci si puo rifocillare degustando una torta
ai mirtilli. dopo névache la alta valle della clarée é un
angolo di paradiso segreto e selvaggio illuminato dai
colori dell’estate », spiega cyril charlot.
