Hawaii-Islands in Honolulu. Completed his studies in Russian and French language and culture at the Harvard
University, then he received a Ph.D. degree at the Yale University in 1965 on the field of linguistics. Taught in Kuala
Lumpur between 1963 and 1964. In 1967 he became professor of the English language in Chicago at the University
of Illinois. Mr. Makkai is member of editorial board of several professional journals. Next to that he writes poems,
essays and critiques in Hungarian. He is the editor and publisher of the three-volume large ’IN QUEST OF THE
MIRACLE STAG’ antology that presents the quintessence of 700 hundred years of Hungarian poetry in Hungarian
original as well as in English translation. Mr. Makkai received in 1997 the Hungarian Literary Observer prize of the
Hollandiai Mikes Kelemen Kör (Association for Hungarian Art, Literature and Science in the Netherlands).
SEGESVÁRY, Viktor
A budapesti Református Theológiai Akadémián nyert lelkészi oklevelet 1953-ban. A genfi egyetemen doktorált
politikai tudományokból, majd református theológiából. 1971 és 1994 között az Egyesült Nemzetek gazdasági
fejlesztési programjának igazgatója — Algéria, Afganisztán, Mali, — majd, korai nyugalomba vonulása után, mint
konzultáns, az ENSZ Fejlesztési Programjának főtanácsadója afrikai és ázsiai országokban. 1994 óta a civilizációk
közötti viszony és elkerülhetetlen dialógusuk feltételeit, valamint a globalizáció problematikáját tanulmányozza.
Born in Hungary, he left his homeland after the 1956 Revolution, and worked during 25 years with the United
Nations in the field of economics and social development. His experiences in Asia and Africa familiarized him with
the existence of different human worlds and taught him the necessity of understanding and tolerance in human
relations. He obtained a Ph.D. in Political Science and International Relations from the Graduate School for
International Studies and a D.D. from the Faculty of Protestant Theology, both at the University of Geneva
(Switzerland).
SULYOK, Vince
1932-ben a Győr melletti Ménfőn született és egri főiskolai hallgatóként vett részt a 1956-os forradalomban, amiért
utóbb el kellett hagynia Magyarországot. Norvégiában talált második otthonára, ahol újabb diplomát szerzett, majd
az Osloi Egyetemi Könyvtárban évtizedeken át volt a közép- és kelet-európai részleg (s benne a bőséges hungaricagyűjtemény)
szakértője és vezetője. 1958-ban Rómában jelent meg verseskönyve (Rámdöntött világ), 1961-ben
Brüsszelben (Céltalan ég alatt). A norvég, a német, az orosz és a magyar irodalom jeles műfordítója. Sulyok Vince
sok éves munkájának eredményeképp 1995-ben megjelent az Ungarns Historie og Kultur (Magyarország története
és művelődése) című, 700 oldalas, enciklopédikus mű, mely hiteles és bőséges ismeretet közvetít a magyar kultúráról
a skandináv világ számára.
Born in 1932 in Ménfő, near Győr (Hungary). Took part in the 1956 Revolution as a college student in Eger and
therefore he ought to leave his country. He found refuge in Norway, where he gained an additional degree and was
for decades with the Oslo University Library as the expert and leader of the Central and Eastern-European section. In
1958 his volume of poems entitled ‘A world knocked over on me’ was published in Rome and in 1961 another one,
‘Under aimless sky’ in Brussels. Mr. Sulyok has an extensive literary translation record; he translates the Norwegian,
German, Russian and Hungarian literature. In 1995 his 700 pages large encyclopaedic work written in Norwegian
entitled Ungarns Historie og Kultur (Hungary’s History and Culture) was published, which has already proved to be
an invaluable source to the whole Scandinavian world interested in Hungarian history and culture.
TÓTH, Alfréd
1965-ben született St. Gallenben, Svájcban, magyar anyanyelvűként. Két Ph.D. fokozattal rendelkezik (1989
matematika, Zürichi Egyetem; 1992 filozófia, Stuttgarti Egyetem) és egy master fokozattal (1991, általános és
összehasonlító nyelvészet, finn-ugor és romanisztika, Zürichi Egyetem). 2006 óta Tucsonban (Arizona) a matematika
professzora. Több matematikai, szemiotikai, kibernetikai és nyelvészeti társaság, valamint nyolc nemzetközi folyóirat
tudományos tanácsának tagja. Tucsonban és Szombathelyen él, ahonnan családja származik.
Born in 1965 in St. Gallen (Switzerland), his native tongue is Hungarian. Received two PhD's (1989 Mathematics,
University of Zurich; 1992 Philosophy, University of Stuttgart) and an MA (General and Comparative Linguistics,
Finno-Ugristics and Romanistics, University of Zurich 1991). Mr. Tóth is since 2006 Professor of Mathematics
(Algebraic Topology) in Tucson, Arizona. He is member of many mathematical, semiotic, cybernetic and linguistic
societies and scientific board member of eight international journals. Lives in Tucson and Szombathely where his
family comes from.
