0th MERDEKA CELEBRATION

In conjunction with the 50th Independence Day, a
celebration was held on the 29th September 2007.
Various activities were carried out to mark the event,
including a march past competition in the morning
and the ‘Malam Ekspresi Kemerdekaan’. The
highlight of the event was the presentation
of the national flag, ‘Jalur Gemilang’ to
the Director of PSP, Tn.
Hj. Noor Azahan Othman

a DPM student. Among
other colourful activities
were sketches and ‘Dikir
Barat’ performance. Pn
Khairul Bariah from
commerce department,
acted as the advisor of the
programme which aimed
at installing patriotism

YOU VIEW IT IN THE
TEACHING PROFESSION

A seminar on ‘English – How
Would You View It In The Teaching
Profession’ was jointly organized
by General Studies Department
and Training & Continuing
Education Unit. This two – day
– affair was held on 30 &
31 October 2007 at the Main
Lecture Hall of Seberang Perai
Polytechnic involving 67 staff and
240 students from Commerce
Department , Electrical Engineering
D e p a r t m e n t , M e c h a n i c a l
Engineering Department and
Mathematics, Science & Computer
Department as well as 26
polytechnics and community
colleges lecturers from northern
region.
The English Language Unit had
taken up the challenge for the
role of promoter by assisting and
motivating the technical lecturers
and students to use English
as the medium of instruction in
teaching and learning process.
This seminar also helped to
expose the participants to the
practical tips in building intrinsic
motivation to enhance learning.
Michael E. Rudder ( Ph.D.) , the
Regional English Language
Officer for East Asia presented
some misconceptions and
suggestions regarding language
teaching and learning. Lecturers
were exposed to a wide range of
issues: the historical perspectives
of English language teaching;
the acquisition of language by
non-native speakers and the
interaction between learner styles
and teaching strategies. In one
of the interactive sessions ,
lecturers were asked to assume
the role of students – using the
creativity to rewrite a poem titled

peringkat JKM telah diadakan pada
19-20 November 2007 bertempat
di Hotel Hydro Majestic, Pulau
Pinang. Kursus yang bertujuan
bagi memberi pendedahan dan
melengkapkan para pensyarah
dengan pengetahuan dalam
pembinaan soalan mengikut
prosedur yang tepat. Tajuk-tajuk
modul yang diperjelaskan amat
bertepatan dengan kehendak
seminar ini. Ribuan terima kasih
diucapkan kepada fasilitator yang
terlibat iaitu En Che Ghani B Che
Kob, En Chung Boon Chuan, En
Muhd Nasir Marzuki, En Mohd
Fadli B Abd Hamid, En Shuhaimi
B Samanol, En Hafaif B Murad,
Pn Hasnah Bt Muhammad dan Pn

‘ Feelings’. Besides that , lecturers
were shown how few popular
classroom-tested activities which
could be easily modified to
suit various classroom sizes and
student levels. Not forgetting the
students, Dr. Rudder allocated two
hours to talk on how students can
increased their motivation to learn
English.
After attending this seminar, the
English Language Unit hoped
that the sessions presented by Dr.
Rudder will contribute towards
the success of using English as
the medium of instruction by the
technical subjects lecturers.
The students are exposed to the practical tips of building up their
intrinsic motivation.
