0th MERDEKA CELEBRATION<br />

In conjunction with the 50th Independence Day, a<br />
celebration was held on the 29th September 2007.<br />
Various activities were carried out to mark the event,<br />
including a march past competition in the morning<br />
and the ‘Malam Ekspresi Kemerdekaan’. The<br />
highlight of the event was the presentation<br />
of the national flag, ‘Jalur Gemilang’ to<br />
the Director of PSP, Tn.<br />

A seminar on ‘English – How<br />
Would You View It In The Teaching<br />
Profession’ was jointly organized<br />
by General Studies Department<br />
and Training & Continuing<br />
Education Unit. This two – day<br />
– affair was held on 30 &<br />
31 October 2007 at the Main<br />
Lecture Hall of <strong>Seberang</strong> <strong>Perai</strong><br />
Polytechnic involving 67 staff and<br />
240 students from Commerce<br />
Department , Electrical Engineering<br />
D e p a r t m e n t , M e c h a n i c a l<br />
Engineering Department and<br />
Mathematics, Science & Computer<br />
Department as well as 26<br />
polytechnics and community<br />
colleges lecturers from northern<br />
region.<br />
The English Language Unit had<br />
taken up the challenge for the<br />
role of promoter by assisting and<br />
motivating the technical lecturers<br />
and students to use English<br />
as the medium of instruction in<br />
teaching and learning process.<br />
This seminar also helped to<br />
expose the participants to the<br />
practical tips in building intrinsic<br />
motivation to enhance learning.<br />
Michael E. Rudder ( Ph.D.) , the<br />
Regional English Language<br />
Officer for East Asia presented<br />
some misconceptions and<br />
suggestions regarding language<br />
teaching and learning. Lecturers<br />
were exposed to a wide range of<br />
issues: the historical perspectives<br />
of English language teaching;<br />
the acquisition of language by<br />
non-native speakers and the<br />
interaction between learner styles<br />
and teaching strategies. In one<br />
of the interactive sessions ,<br />
lecturers were asked to assume<br />
the role of students – using the<br />
creativity to rewrite a poem titled<br />

Kursus Pembinaan Item<br />
peringkat JKM telah diadakan pada<br />
19-20 November 2007 bertempat<br />
di Hotel Hydro Majestic, Pulau<br />
Pinang. Kursus yang bertujuan<br />
bagi memberi pendedahan dan<br />
melengkapkan para pensyarah<br />
dengan pengetahuan dalam<br />
pembinaan soalan mengikut<br />
prosedur yang tepat. Tajuk-tajuk<br />
modul yang diperjelaskan amat<br />
bertepatan dengan kehendak<br />
seminar ini. Ribuan terima kasih<br />
diucapkan kepada fasilitator yang<br />
terlibat iaitu En Che Ghani B Che<br />
Kob, En Chung Boon Chuan, En<br />
Muhd Nasir Marzuki, En Mohd<br />
Fadli B Abd Hamid, En Shuhaimi<br />
B Samanol, En Hafaif B Murad,<br />
Pn Hasnah Bt Muhammad dan Pn<br />

‘ Feelings’. Besides that , lecturers<br />
were shown how few popular<br />
classroom-tested activities which<br />
could be easily modified to<br />
suit various classroom sizes and<br />
student levels. Not forgetting the<br />
students, Dr. Rudder allocated two<br />
hours to talk on how students can<br />
increased their motivation to learn<br />
English.<br />
After attending this seminar, the<br />
English Language Unit hoped<br />
that the sessions presented by Dr.<br />
Rudder will contribute towards<br />
the success of using English as<br />
the medium of instruction by the<br />
technical subjects lecturers.<br />
The students are exposed to the practical tips of building up their<br />
intrinsic motivation.<br />
