The Chicago <strong>Opera</strong> Company had been announced for a four week run at the Shubert Theatre, but this Tuesday<br />

performance of Lucia abruptly ended that engagement. Mat<strong>in</strong>ée and even<strong>in</strong>g performances on Wednesday of<br />

Rigoletto and La forza del dest<strong>in</strong>o were cancelled as well as Thursday and Friday performances of Il barbiere di<br />

Siviglia and La gioconda. Then it was announced the Chicago company would open at the Metropolitan <strong>Opera</strong><br />

House on Friday with a ‘‘negro soprano’’ <strong>in</strong> the role of Aida, and <strong>in</strong>deed there was a another announcement for<br />

this on the day of the performance (I could f<strong>in</strong>d no review), but at some po<strong>in</strong>t on Saturday the company was<br />

forced to cancel the rest of its engagement. I do not know whether the Saturday afternoon double bill was<br />

performed, but the Saturday even<strong>in</strong>g performance of Carmen was cancelled.<br />
