Abstract:<br />
Objectives: the aim of this study was to evaluate the attitude and the knowledge of the mothers towards<br />
digit sucking habit and investigate the association between certain factors and the existence<br />
of this habit.<br />
Methods: a cross-sectional sample of 150 mothers were interviewed in the primary care centers<br />
whom they had children currently practicing digit sucking habit .A questionnaire was distributed to<br />
obtain information regarding mothers age, nationality, education level, employment status and their<br />
attitude towards this habit, in addition to the required information about their children in relation to<br />
sex, age and the number of the children practicing this habit in the family.<br />
Results :the analyzed data revealed different nationalities of the participating mothers ,younger<br />
ones represent (52.7%),(47.3%)of the mothers were educated and (70.o%)were unemployed.<br />
Females(65.3%) practicing this habit more than males and(45.3%)of the children were less than 3year-old<br />
. Significant factors associated with mothers attitude towards digit sucking habit,(88.6%)of<br />
them were never tolerated this habit ,instruction was given by unemployed mothers (75.0%) and<br />
(89.9%)of the mothers never ask for dental advice.<br />
Conclusion: mothers did not find digit-sucking habit an acceptable behavior regardless their nationalities,<br />
they try to stop the habit using different techniques without any scientific basis or professional<br />
advice. Mothers need a motivational program, scientific advice and certain tips to discourage<br />
this habit.<br />
Obiettivo: Lo scopo di questo studio era di valutare l’attitudine e la conoscenza delle madri verso<br />
l’abitudine al succhiamento delle dita e investigare l’associazione tra certi fattori e l’esistenza<br />
dell’abitudine.<br />
Metodi: All’interno di centri di cura primari un campione eterogeneo di 150 madri, i cui figli succhiavano<br />
le dita, e’ stato intervistato. Un questionario e’ stato distribuito per ottenere informazioni<br />
sull’età, nazionalita’, livello educativo, stato lavorativo delle madri e la loro attitudine personale<br />
verso il succhiamento. Inoltre esse erano invitate a riportare informazioni sui figli in termini di eta’,<br />
sesso, numero di fratelli e sorelle con l’abitudine al succhiamento.<br />
Risultati: I dati analizzati hanno rivelato l’impatto demografico con madri giovani rappresentanti il<br />
52.7%, madri con un certo livello educativo (47.3%) e madri-casalinghe (70%). I bambini con l’abitudine<br />
al succhiamento sono risultati essere per la maggior parte femmine (65.3%) e il 45.3 %<br />
aveva una eta’ inferiore ai 3 anni. Fattori significativi sono la non tolleranza dell’abitudine da parte<br />
delle madri (88.6%), il fatto che la maggior parte dei consigli alle madri veniva dato da madri senza<br />
educazione formale (75%), e dal fatto che 89.9% delle madri non aveva mai chiesto consiglio al<br />
dentista.<br />
Conclusioni: Le madri non accettano l’abitudine al succhiamento delle dita indipendentemente dalla<br />
nazionalita’, cercano di interrompere l’abitudine riferendosi a tecniche che non hanno basi scientifiche<br />
e non a pareri professionali. Cio’ di cui le madri hanno bisogno sono un programma motivazionale,<br />
suggerimenti scientifici e tante idée per scoraggiare l’abitudine.<br />
Resume:<br />
Dr. Hussein Al-Obaidi is a lecturer at the Ajman University in the UAE, where she teaches pedodontics.<br />
Among others, she is the author of an article on baby-bottle induced cavities. She was awarded<br />
by the Ministry of Education of Iraq in 1988, and subsequently by the Al-Oais Institution for Cultural<br />
and Scientific Research in Dubai, in 2006 for her contributions in research and education.<br />
Dr. Hussein Al-Obaidi insegna pedodonzia all’Universita’ di Ajman negli EAU. Ha pubblicato diversi<br />
articoli, tra i quali uno sulla carie come conseguenza del’uso prolungato del biberon. Ha ricevuto un<br />
premio dal ministero dell’educazione iracheno in 1988 e il primo premio dall”istituto Al-Oais per la<br />
Ricerca Scientifica e Culturale, a Dubai, per il suo contributo in ricerca ed educazione.<br />
