Title: Central neural dysfunctions induced by stomatognathic proprioception: case studies
Neuro-disfunzioni centrali indotte dalla propriocezione stomatognatica: presentazione
di casi
Activity: Lecture / Presentazione
Abstract:
The research arose from the clinical observations during treatments of re-balanced occlusion
in patients suffering from postural rigidity syndromes. The functional evaluation of the
stomatognathic apparatus was performed through examinations of Surface Electromyography
and computerized Kinesiography. The cognitive efficiency was tested through the saccadic
movements and the number and quality of the relief points during ocular fixation. The
patients were observed at first in occlusal equilibrium, determined by the positioning of an
inferior bite and, subsequently, in normal occlusion. The study, based on 120 subjects, revealed
a variability of the fixations in about 50% of the subjects, whereas the ocular saccadic
movements varied in the 90% of the tested cases and all show physiologic saccadic
drifts. The therapeutic objectives were not only finalized to aesthetic dentistry but also to
determine a sensory-motor interaction, which can produce a cortical-subcortical syntropy.
I pazienti erano osservati inizialmente
sintropia corticale e sottocorticale.
Dr. De Cicco is an MD and has a specialty in Implantology and Neuro-muscular Occlusion.
Since 2001 he has been instructor in postural and neuro-dysfunctional dentistry at L’Aquila
University. He is Cultural Secretary of the International Myofunctional Association (IMA)
and he is a referent for the Italian Society of Maxillo-Dentistry (SIMO). In 2004, he presented
a study showing the influence of oral proprioception on cognitive performance and
now he works with Prof. Brunelli to extend the research on the topic, which was originally
presented at the International congress of neurosciences in Madrid, in 2006. Dr. De Cicco is
the promoter and coordinator of a course in neurostomatology applied to posture, at Chieti
University.
Il Dott. De Cicco stato docente in Implantologia all’Accademia Italiana degli Impianti (MI).
Perfezionato nel 1986 in occlusione neuro-muscolare. Dal 2001 è Professore a contratto di
“odontoiatria posturale e neuro-disfunzionale” Università di L’Aquila. Segretario Culturale
IMA (International Miofunctional Association). Referente gnatologia SIMO ( Società Italiana
Maxillo Odontostomatologia).
tale ricerca e insegna neurostomatologia e postura all’Università di Chieti.
