“But rust taxa on extant primitive host taxa
are not necessarily more primitive than those
on advanced hosts. Rusts, in both specific and
generic levels, may jump to unrelated hosts in
the course of evolution (Jackson 1931b; Leppik
1953, 1955, 1959, 1967, 1972). Directions of
this jump are oriented mostly by ecophysiological
factors, and not always from primitive
to advanced host taxa”.
