The Eden ‘Leap’, The Waterfall all on its
own, The Green stone. Just a few of the
places evoking a plethora of emotions that
the visitor encounters along the canyon
situated right at the heart of the park of the
Cascate dell’Acuafraggia, at Piuro. Hidden
corners with vegetation at its most luxuriant.
Thunderous water plunging wildly. Light
and colour combining magnificently.
The big adventure begins in Val Bregagalia,
in the village of Piuro. Valcolda is a tributary
valley of the wider and better-known Valle
Drana, but which insinuates its way within
the right hill-side of the main valley, not far
at all from the waterfall Acqua Fraggia. The
canyon includes a dozen ‘falls’ of differing
heights: some betwen 10 and 15 metres,

up to a maximum of 25-30 metres. It’s a
genuine adventure playground - and very
highly charged with emotion - as I discovered
when I explored it for the first time
along with Valchiavenna Alpine guides
Franco Giacomelli and Guido Lisignoli on
a spectacular July day last year, (to be
precise, the 30th).
If your appetite is whetted reading this and
you are considering a descent along this
lengthy stretch I recommend strongly that
you involve the help of a local alpine guide,
who, along with his technical expertise, will
take you to some of the most extraordinary
places which make this canyon the wild
and marvellous challenge that it is.
Along the route you run up against some
pretty demanding mountaineering sections.

Nature all around provides a magnificent
back-drop to the task in hand; man’s presence
hardly a feature at all, and every little
element which goes to make up this highly
original habitat makes its presence felt.
Here the abundance of water and the almost
tropical heat in summer encourage
the growth of a very particular species of
plant-life.
Water as pure as you’ll encounter anywhere:
deep pools along the way proving
far too tempting to deny ourselves a dip.
I’ve tried to select photographs that will
