Instead of the usual two engines, there are three smaller ones that take less space from the cabins
shipyard stands out for the attention given to all the details and the flexibility of her interiors
THREE IS THE PERFECT NUMBER IN THE ENGINE ROOM
There are times when secret dreams remain just that for years on end.
That’s often not a bad thing in itself, sometimes it really is better to wait
until the time is right. In the case of AB Yachts the right time finally arrived
last year when its 140’ design for a maxi open turned out to be absolutely
a trend at the big end of the boat spectrum. “We had pulled up our range
at 92’, but we’d also been wanting to get into the maxi world for some
time. I’d had that design up my sleeve since 2001…,” explained engineer
Marco Arnaboldi, who created the new craft’s naval architecture in tan-
dem with the yard’s own technical office. “However, we wanted to ensure
that the maxi-open we were designing would immediately be recognisable
as an AB, that it would have the lines and comfort of our yachts despite
being a completely custom product.” The 140 footer’s sporty style and
high-performance hull are matched beautifully, in fact, by interiors and
exteriors worthy of any mega motoryacht on the scene today. “We structured
them so that they would be very flexible in terms of the interior designer
and owner’s needs. There are very few structural bulkheads, for instance.”
The need to give the designer carte blanche led to the decision to
stavamo progettando fosse immediatamente riconoscibile come
158 159
hand over the three craft in the series to two different architecture studios:
“The first (seen here), commissioned by a Greek owner, has interiors
by Giorgio Vafiadis. The second and third, on the other hand, were worked
on by De Groot, a studio we’ve been collaborating with for some time now.”
The Vafiadis 140 has four cabins while the other two feature five. Stylistically,
they’re all very different too. Vafiadis brings a classic touch to his
while the second version is modern with a focus on sophisticated materials
and juxtaposed colours. The Vafiadis boat also sports a bronze livery
while the De Groot one is silver. The former is also a 100% open while the
second is a coupé with fly and second steering position. The third version
should be leaving the yard in 2009 but will actually probably be preceded
by the fourth, which is currently being commissioned. AB Yachts intends
to build three of this model a year.
What every single 140’ will share with its siblings, however, is a meticulously
developed, very efficient propulsion system. “After several tests we
decided to opt for three smaller engines rather than two larger ones. That
saved us around three metres of space below decks which added to the
size of the cabins. We did a lot of work in the fantastic 900-metre test tank
esemplare, a firma De Groot.
Abbiamo lavorato molto a San Pietroburgo, in
Siamo riusciti a garantire
queste barche». Accarezzate, diremmo, come i veri sogni.
162
b
in St. Petersburg where they test using 1:5 scale models,” says Arnaboldi.
The tank testing meant that the yard knew the boat’s centre of gravity to
the nearest millimetre and allowed it to calibrate the engine set-up to
perfection. “7,200 hp is a relatively small number for a boat that performs
like the 140’. We’ve managed to guarantee a 46-knot top speed
and a 43.5-knot cruising speed at one-third capacity. That’s because we
used lightweight materials that cut around 15 tonnes off the overall
weight,” concludes Arnaboldi. It looks like the 140 was one dream worth
the wait!
