che vuole rendere omaggio a George Clooney;
Infatti, George Clooney, insieme a altri suoi colleghi
altrettanto illustri, è fondatore dell’associazione
“Not on our watch” che da anni si adopera
quasi scanzonata e informale. Quell’atmosfera
voluta dal Comitato Promotore, T.B.M. Service
& C., Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club,
dispensando sorrisi e rendendosi disponibile
davvero iniziare.
E sotto i migliori auspici.
Dentro la sala – magnificamente allestita da
Maria Luigia Faggian – un uomo semplice, ma
attento, gentile, elegante, con un inconfondibile
sorriso, luminoso e intrigante, disponibile e solare,
in gag improvvisate e in divertenti siparietti
che l’hanno visto protagonista con George
Clooney.
“lucia” in argento, entrambe incise
vitivinicolo Claudio Quarta - Magistra Vini.
to Darfur”.
Service & C.,
ideatrice di questo progetto, altra carta vincente
della serata. Un ringraziamento sincero a Elena
Massari, Nadia Baba, Elisabetta Comerio, Andrea
Pedretti, Andrea Ferrari, Maria Formigoni
e Silvia Galli.
and the Eclectica associate
‘A drop of lake for Dafur’. Said like that it may
seem to be a very appropriate slogan, but there’s
much more to it: it in fact encapsulates a philosophy
of thinking which has very deep roots.
The ‘drop’ represents our simple but profoundly
heartfelt contribution; the ‘lake’ encapsulates the
essence of our homeland, the very one wishing
to honour George Clooney; and lastly Dafur, the
project the Hollywood star is committed to. Our
desire to organise the benefit event ‘A drop of
lake for Dafur’, was thus born out of the sincere
need to pay proper tribute to George Clooney,
as if he were simply a fellow citizen, for his deep
commitment to a Country stricken by war, where
human rights have practically been annihilated
and future prospects have become no more than
dim lights in the distance.
Together with other equally famous colleagues,
George Clooney in fact founded the associa-
tion ‘Not on our watch’ which has for years been
supporting this region of Sudan. But the event
‘A drop of lake for Darfur’ was also meant to
acknowledge a special citizen on our lake who
shares the philosophy typifying the ‘lake mood’.
A ‘thank you’ to Mr Clooney for bringing home to
local inhabitants - sometimes with their heads in
the clouds - an awareness of living in a unique
area. George Clooney, a friend among friends
and not by chance a proud supporter of the evening;
and on this occasion it was ‘Amici di Como’
who appointed Mr Clooney as a member of this
association who have wholeheartedly backed his
solidarity project.
Not just a chance decision, but the brainchild of
specific affinities: Amici di Como and George
Clooney are in fact bound by the same deep
passionate love for our homeland and our lake
and valleys, and our wealth of fine architecture
and scenery. And now by an infinitely more noble
motivation as well: that of restoring hope and putting
a smile back on the faces of the people of
Dafur. In this way the ties binding Clooney to our
area are now more deep-rooted and indissoluble
than ever thanks to Amici di Como and a ‘A drop
of Lake for Dafur’.
THE EVENING
At Menaggio - Cadenabbia Golf Club on 4 th September
the atmosphere was friendly, quite laidback
and informal, as envisaged by the Promotion
Committee, T.B.M. Service & C., Menaggio
and Cadenabbia Golf Club, Petazzi Costruzioni
and the magazine Magic Lake.
But for the event to go off perfectly one ingredient
was vital: the involvement of George Clooney.
Mr Clooney came through the Golf Club gates at
8.30pm; before sitting down to dinner, made by
Osteria Del Pomiroeu chef Giancarlo Morelli, he
mingled with guests bestowing smiles and acting
in a completely approachable way.
At that point all fears were dispensed with: the
evening could really get under way - and things
augered well! And in the hall - magnificently
decorated by Maria Luigia Faggian - a simple yet
attentive man, who was polite and elegant with
his unmistakable smile, radiant and intriguing,
approachable and irrepressible, had 160 pairs of
guests’ eyes focused on him; a man who’d left
entertainment, spotlights and Hollywood luxury
at home, together with his awareness of being
one of the most (perhaps the most) desirable
and sought-after people in the world today, and
made himself available to ‘friends’.
Host of the evening Magic Lake magazine editor
Daniele Brunati who also represented the
organising committee, was involved during the
presentation of the event in some quick-fire gags
and entertaining entr’acte one-liners together
with George Clooney.
While this was going on, ‘Amici di Como’ President
Mario Pittorelli gave Mr Clooney the association’s
membership card and a typical silver ‘lucia’
(typical Lake Como boat), both engraved by
chaser Virginio Consonni, which will be displayed
discretely in George’s sitting room.
To enable the setting up of a more imporatant
joint project over the next few years, Rosaria
Casali then appointed George as Honourary
President of ‘A drop of lake for Darfur’.
This gesture was to symbolize and sanction the
mutual commitment of the organising committee
and Mr Clooney.
George moreover received a hamper of typical
local produce filled by the Consorzio Sapori di
Terra, Sapori di Lago as well as a case of wines
offered by vintner Claudio Quarta.
The Organising Committee then gave George
a ‘virtual album’ compliled by Mauro Cozza and
Giulino Piccolo encapsulating the essence of
our homeland, consisting of natural treasures,
breathtaking sunsets, the expressions of local
people and pictures of our traditions. Moreover,
so as to summarize the evening’s message and
values Maurizio Camponovo had made a short
film wth footage shot on the banks of Lake Como
which Sylvie Petazzi handed over to Mr Clooney.
Next George and Nick Clooney’s documentary on
Darfur was shown, entitled ‘A Journey to Darfur’.
Then the illustrious guest himself wanted to say
a few words to stress the need for commitment
to the project, as well as to thank all those present
personally for being in the forefront in raising
funds for an initiative that means a lot to him,
recognising the value of our ‘drop’. The Chairman
of the Golf Club Vittorio Roncoroni then wished to
thank his fraternal friend Clooney personally for
his presence and commitment, and at the same
time ask him not to leave Lake Como.
George replied with a smile and a nod of agreement
which meant much more than any words.
Clooney personally signed t-shirts on offer to
guests at the end of the dinner; the first was
purchased by new ‘Amici di Como’ member
Eclectica, a company specialising in devising
and running grandiose events, which snapped
up the precious ‘designer’ souvenir with a generous
offer and paved the way for other donations.
The dessert buffet was served outside the Club
House between dances and toasts.
The party went on all evening in that same atmosphere
of cordiality and friendship that marked
the whole event.
George stayed on in this informal atmosphere
dancing with ‘his friends’ into the small hours.
Security Transport’s excellent security arrangements
enabled the event to go off perfectly.
The organising committee’s prerogative was
teamwork: the availability of Vittorio Roncoroni
and his wife Maria Luigia was crucial; the commitment
of Celestino Petazzi and his wife Sylvie
was precious; the presence of Daniele Brunati
was decisive, who despite a recent accident was
always ready for action; the capacity of Rosaria
Casali was pivotal as she brought the whole thing
together.
Then as ever the great enthusiasm of the whole
T.B.M. Service & C. team who thought up this
project proved another winning card of the evening.
Our thanks go to: Elena Massari, Nadia
Baba, Elisabetta Comerio, Andrea Pedretti, Andrea
Now a sincere thank you to all those who collaborated
to make a success of the evening: Parco
Rurale ed Artigiana di Cantù.
Our next number will include all the curious happenings,
highly entertaining stories. So don’t miss the
escursioni. L’apertura dell’orizzonte da Oriente
a Occidente offre un panorama unico in tutta la
Lombardia.
Turismo legato alla nobiltà e all’alta borghesia
futurista, Antonio Sant’Elia. Chi sceglie
arriva in piazza Bonacossa, dedicata
borgo. Tra questi anche il poeta bulgaro Penco
Slavejkov.
scienziato, dall’ingegner Gabriele Giussani.
Tivano o a Bellagio.
Attualmente l’amministrazione comunale brunatese
locali e l’educazione civica. Il 30 novembre
appuntamento con la sagra patronale di
Sant’Andrea (mercatino, gastronomia tipica e
animazione).
BRUNATE,
the Balcony
of Como
Liberty Villas, the Funicular
and the Volta Lighthouse
On a holiday in Como, even if it’s just a weehend
break, you’ve just got to visit Brunate the balcony
of Como and its Lake, over 700 metres high and
easily reached by car or using the ATM funicular
railway which leaves from Piazza De Gasperi at
the start of Viale Geno. A historic hamlet called
‘Castello’ and the liberty villas nestling on a steep
wooded mountainside (which begins from the
Lariano Triangle between Como, Lecco and Bellagio)
make Brunate the crossroads of scores of
unforgettable excursions. The horizon sweeping
round from east to west is a panoramic view
which is unique in the whole of Lombardy.
A journey suspended above the town of Como
and the the first branch of the Lario with a view of
the Western Alps and Monte Rosa. The original
nucleus of the village is huddled together on the
side of the mountain shielded from the wind and
dates back to the Middle Ages. Large numbers
of well-preserved, enchanting villas with lovely
parks were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s
thanks to the hamlet’s development as a tourist
46 47
Il borgo di Brunate
Brunate’s village
destination guaranteed by the funicular railway
(inaugurated in 1894).
Tourism connected with Milanese aristocracy
and upper-middle classes, declining after the
war, but which is now enjoying a revival as people
escape from town. Villa Giuliani dates back to the
early 1900s (owned by the family which invented
the famous ‘Medicinal Amaro’), with its typically
liberty-style architecture in its construction and
embellishments and is still used today by the
Giuliani family for special events.
Climbing up the Via alle Colme you come across
Villa Elisi built in 1912 and designed by young futurist
architect Antonio Sant Elia. Those choosing
to get up to Brunate on the panoramic funicular
arrive in Piazza Bonacossa dedicated to the family
of Milanese Counts who own ‘Gazzetta dello
Sport’, who are one of the hamlet’s illustrious
guests; another is the Bulgarian poet Penmco
Slavejkov. On arriving you can’t miss two imposing
buildings, the Grand Hotel Milano currently
looking for someone to restore it after years of
semi-abandonment, and the former Hotel
Brunate, built in 1893 but now split up into luxury
flats looking out over Como. From the Corte del
Castello, one of the oldest spots in the historic
centre, you can walk down to the evocative Corte
degli Ebrei. The village’s main street − where
Villa Franceschini stands (the present premises
of the Town Hall) − is Via Volta dedicated to the
scientist who used to stay in Brunate as a child.
The parish church of St Andrea, restored in the
1600s and extended in 1932, is decorated with
a 15 th century fresco depicting Santa Guglielma,
as well as late 17 th century works by Giovan Battista
Recchi.
We mentioned scores of excursions, the simplest
of which is a half-hour
walk up the mule track between villas and gardens
(those who might find it difficult to walk up
from the Funicular can take a bus), which reaches
the hamlet of San Maurizio (906m) where the
Volta Lighthouse stands − built in 1927 (like the
Volta Temple in the lakeside gardens) to mark the
100 th anniversary of the scientist’s death by the
engineer Gabriele Giussani.
From San Maurizio the view opens out to the North
to include the Lario’s second branch as well. For
walkers and mountainbikers, San Maurizio is the
starting point of some fantastic routes along the
Lariano Triangle ridge joining the summits of Boletto,
Bolettone and Palanzone, as far as (after
several hours of cycling) the Pian del Tivano or
Bellagio. These days Brunate Council is very
much into cultural events; this summer 30 interesting
events were organised including ‘Sunset
Concerts’ in the Library Auditorium, poetry reading,
book presentations, film screenings, and
evenings on history, culture, local traditions and
civic education. On 30 th November make a date
with Patron St Andrea’s feast (stalls, typical local
fare and animation).
A colloquio
con un comasco
ILLUSTRE
di Elisabetta Comerio
foto Archivio Fondazione Cariplo
La sua vita, la missione
della Fondazione Cariplo
e il ruolo di Como
nell’Expo2015
50 51
“Magic Lake” incontra l’avvocato Giuseppe
Guzzetti, presidente della Fondazione Cariplo
per parlare del territorio lariano, della
sua brillante carriera e dell’Expo 2015.
Presidente Guzzetti, lei è considerato un comasco
d’eccezione, nato a Turate e cresciuto
altrove, a Milano, a Roma…
e i paesaggi, e mi piace rimanere informato
nonna materna, a malapena, sapeva scrivere,
portava in sé una grande saggezza popolare
che amava esprimere con proverbi in dialetto:
semplicità e umiltà, con quelle parole sapeva
trasmetterne tante.
chi lavora in silenzio, e spesso gratuitamente,
di enti no profit.
In
come corpi intermedi, e – aggiungo – insostituibili
molte città lombarde, è fortemente legato all’evento
EXPO2015. Lei come giudica questa
chance?
appuntamento internazionale?
Como
deve farsi trovare preparata per partecipare all’organizzazione
di eventi satellite, cercando di
cogliere le proprie peculiarità. Ma deve soprattutto
all’occhiello in vista dell’Expo 2015, quello dei
scientifica. Como dispone di due università
(Insubria e Politecnico); ho visto, recentemente,
rete.
vincente.
GIUSEPPE GUZZETTI
An interview with one of
Como’s illustrious sons
His life, the mission of the Fondazione
Cariplo and Como’s role
in Expo 2015
Magic Lake meets lawyer Giuseppe Guzzetti,
Chairman of the Fondazione Cariplo to discuss
the Como area, his brilliant career and
Expo2015.
President Guzzetti, you are looked upon as
an exceptional Comascan born in Turate and
reaching the heights of your profession in the
Lariano provincial capital. Tell us about your
personal ties with the area.
My roots, my family and my fondest memories
are here, although my life has taken me
elsewhere to Milan, Rome,... But I still live in
this area and appreciate its beauty and landscapes,
and I like to keep up to date with
what’s going on. I’ve managed to keep up with
friends, acquaintances and former colleagues;
and I’ll never forget the development I’ve seen
taking place under my very eyes, such as that
in certain areas like the Top Lake for instance,
which were backward in terms of infrastructure
and services as well as being poor. That many
of those problems have now been solved is
cause for personal satisfaction. This all happened
many years ago when smuggling to and
from Switzerland was still rife. Nowadays there
are cross-border commuters, workers who
have turned a negative starting position (living
up in the mountains often isolated and far
away from the provincial capital, with no jobs...
) round to their advantage.
Chairman of the Fondazione and ACRI, President
of Regional Council of Lombardy and
Senator of the Republic, member of both the
First Senate Committee (Constitutional Affairs)
and the Upper and Lower House Committee
for Institutional Reform, as well as of
the Council of Europe and the West European
Union.
These posts tell us about your present and
past and are indicative of a person of great
stature on the national and international
scene. What does your future hold?
In everything I’ve done I’ve always tried to
treat people with consideration and respect
in keeping with what my parents inculcated in
me. And above all I’ve always set great store
on the advice of old people who from my childhood
happened to be close to me; my maternal
grandmother who was barely literate but
possessed common wisdom which she loved
to impart through adages in dialect: simplicity
and humility, with those words she could communicate
a great deal. But nowadays English
is all the rage... The wisdom of those people
put me in good stead.
Then life has given me a great opportunity to
live out these principles in prestigious environments.
And that treasure chest of values has
been invaluable to me: even great institutions
are made up of people whom you have to work
with, come up against and battle things out
with if necessary, without ever ignoring the limits
imposed by having men and women in front
of you who possess absolute values. Although
politics used to play an enormous part in my life
for a long time, I’ve finished with them for ever.
My great current commitment to philanthropic
work draws a lot on my past experience: I’ve
tried to synthesize it and use it as effectively as
possible to do a good job in serving those who
work quietly - often for nothing - for others. So
my future will be spent doing this focussing my
attention on young people who in effect represent
the future of our country.
The Fondazione Cariplo has one specific
mission: philanthropy supporting non-profit
organisations. To what extent do you share
the foundation’s vision?
I’ve personally been lucky enough to live
through the total transformation of charitable
trusts like ours which used to be connected
with the Casse di Risparmio which was traditionally
involved in charity work. Foundations
can play a pivotal role in sustaining a country’s
social, cultural and economic development.
For this to happen foundations must be able
to operate freely. This all takes years of hard
work in order to obtain formal recognition as
go-between bodies which - let me add - are
irreplaceable in our society. In Fondazione
Cariplo’s mission I continue to see my past, my
culture and even my own persona; and that’s
why being its chairman is both a pleasure and
an honour for me. But what’s really satisfying
54 55
is the fact that the whole board of the Foundation,
the Central Benefit Committee and the
board of directors share this mission. So since
its inception in 1991, the Foundation has grown
and evolved in keeping with the continuous diversification
of the area’s needs by adopting
new approaches and strategies. Fondazione
Cariplo’s vision is that of working (for no financial
gain) towards goals of general interest
and public usefulness in various spheres such
as art, culture, education, scientific research,
health and supporting vulnerable members of
spociety. Fondazione Cariplo’s role might best
be summed up as “a resource to help social
and civil institutions to serve their own community
better.” I get enormous satisfaction from
seeing the Foundation grow, together with the
young people working in it and its range of activities;
we’re always seeking up-to-date ways
to achieve our ends more effectively.
The Fondazione Cariplo backs development
and social innovation, as it tries to turn ideas
into future actions. Like many towns in Lombardy,
Milan’s future is strongly bound up
with the Expo 2015 event; how do you rate
this chance?
Expo represents a great opportunity for urban
regeneration - as long as the real needs of
people, families, young couples, businesses,
and all those who live and work in the city are
catered for. Infrastructural urban regeneration
etc., makes sense if primary prerequisites are
borne in mind: the town needs redesigning so
as to be liveable and welcoming not just in the
city centre but also and above all on the outskirts.
What role could Como play in this international
appointment?
Como can exploit the event favourably to up its
world profile: it’s a pleasant locality near the
event’s pivotal city Milan, and is set in a highly
attractive area where visitors can find things
a great metropolis can’t offer them. The good
‘publicity’ from international stars choosing
to live here plays in its favour as well. Como
must make sure it’s ready to organise satellite
events showcasing its own unique points. But
the keyword is readiness - creating the preconditions
for the event to pave the way for the
future.
Based on your experience, what sort of projects
should Como be envisaging for such a
prestigious occasion singling it out from other
Lombard provinces? And how much can
such projects expect to be helped by you and
the Foundation?
The Fondazione Cariplo has always been sensitive
to the needs of the Como area - as it
has for other Lombard provinces: that’s what
we’re all about. Every year we donate millions
of euros. One hugely important project
which might well turn out to be the forthcoming
EXPO2015 jewel in the crown is that of the
Magistri Comacini; this is a grand, somewhat
complex scheme to reinstate the beauty of the
Isola Comacina and the Central and Top lake
areas. Funded some years back to the tune of
over 7 million euros the scheme is undergoing
implementation.
In 2007 (in accordance with the last budget
passed) the Fondazione Cariplo donated over
18 million euros to non-profit bodies operating
in the Province of Como. A third of the sums
donated went towards art and culture, whereas
38% went towards science projects - figures
confirming our area’s great cultural tradition
with an important artistic and architectural
heritage worth preserving and reinstating; it is
moreover an area capable of innovation and at
the cutting edge in scientific research. Como
boasts two universities (Insubria and Polytechnic);
I recently saw plans to raise human
capital of excellence to support vehicles of
research and funding, to give Como’s young
people and businesses a hand in tackling a
difficult future.
Such considerations prompt us to say that
Como should make the most of its traditional
way of welcoming tourists through exploiting
its area’s amenities, its splendid lake and fine
monuments. But Expo2015 shouldn’t be used
to stress differences but rather to interact.
Only this way will the event have positive longterm
repercussions. The management of an
area (like any other business) must entail risk
spreading, which is why putting all your eggs
in one tourist basket is wrong: all sectors need
harmonious growth in order to get through individual
sector crises. Hence the importance
of the Foundation’s trend also to back scientific
research in Como: it means that behind the
splendid backdrop of the lake and the mountains,
there’s action on other fronts too. This
may be a winning weapon.
In queste pagine e nelle precedenti, alcune
immagini del torchio di Palanzo
On this pages and on the previous pages, some
images of Palanzo’s old wine press
cortili, androni, ballatoi in legno ingentiliti
dai fiori.
lontano.
Tastes
of autumn
around
the old wine
press
Palanzo hosts a rerun
of the traditional
October feast
Every year when summer is over but autumn on
the banks of the Lario still has beautiful romantic
days to offer, an age-old giant reawakens and
around him from morning to night a whole village
is in festive mood. The village is Palanzo, a hamlet
nestling on Lake Como’s mountain slopes
above Faggeto Lario (which Palanzo is now part
of) at a height of 700 metres; an ancient group of
stone dwellings furrowed by cobbled mountain
streets.
The houses here have preserved the same architectural
features of simple peasant dwellingplaces,
embellished by stone portals and vaults,
and courtyards, entrances and wooden balconies,
ornated with flowers.
The feast is announced by a fragrant aroma of
chestnuts and sausages wafting through the
streets, bewitching and capturing hearts and
stomachs. And this very aroma leads you to this
giant imprisoned as if in a shrine by the stones
of the ancient buildiong built round him, as if to
shield him from the ravishes of time; then at last
within a casket of stone stands the huge 16th
century wine press carved out of a single chesnut-tree
trunk - and not just any old chestnut
tree - but a 12-metre long tree.
The inhabitants of Palanzo wanted to build it in
1572, using a chestnut tree which in fact stood
in that very place; and since then generation
after generation has used it to extract precious
walnut oil, and from the vines a sour yet tasty
little wine called bruschett. Every year on the second
Sunday in October, the giant is reborn and
pressed back into service to squeeze the juice
out of turgid bunches of grapes as well as enjoy
the merry village festivities consisting of music,
dancing and aromas.
An autumn feast with the flavours and atmosphere
of yesteryear: the smell of the roasting
chestnuts reminds you that autumn is here; the
tasty smell of the salami and sausages is reminiscent
of a rural atmosphere; the rhythm of
the seasons takes you back to when the fields
around Palanzo were cultivated with maize and
barley, and vines would be planted as farmland
boundries. In October all the peasants would be
tied up harvesting their few grapes; the grapes
picked would be crushed in vats and any remaining
marc would be taken to the press for a second
pressing.
In those days nothing was wasted. After your
adventures and overdoing things in the summer,
the feast of the wine press is a gentle way
of returning to the quiet normality of the natural
rhythms of the countryside, life as it used to be
with its ancient crafts: it’s an occasion for a jolly
get-together to enjoy the last warm days when
winter is still a long way off.
BSI Swiss Architectural Award intende riconoscere
e segnalare all’attenzione del pubblico
dall’autorevole patrocinio dell’Ufficio Federale
Campo Baeza (Spagna), Massimo Carmassi e
Roberto Collovà (Italia), Kenneth Frampton (Stati
Uniti), Dan S. Hanganu (Canada), Yung Ho
Chang (Cina), Kengo Kuma (Giappone), Paulo
Mendes da Rocha (Brasile), Boris Podrecca (Austria),
Anant Raje (India) e Bruno Reichlin (Svizzera).
Un collegio davvero internazionale, che ha comunicato
alla giuria del premio, presieduta da
Mario Botta e composta da Emilio Ambasz (Stati
Uniti), Valentin Bearth (Svizzera), Davide Croff
L’organizzazione del premio, affidata all’Archivio
In quell’occasione
sarà pure allestita, presso la Galleria dell’Accademia,
un’esposizione delle opere presentate
dai candidati: mostra che, insieme al catalogo
BSI Swiss
Architectural
Award
The international circuit for architecture
prizes will have an important new date this
year: 13 November 2008. On this date the
winner of the first BSI Swiss Architectural
Award will be awarded. This new award is
preannounced to become one of the most
prestigious in its field.
In December 2006 Banca del Gottardo set up a
foundation for promoting knowledge, education
and research in the field of architecture. The new
architecture award is a specific expression of this
interest.
This involvement in the field of architecture has
not stopped with the recent acquisition of Banca
del Gottardo by BSI AG. Participation in this project
is growing as its importance, demonstrating
once again BSI’s strong cultural ties. BSI is committed
to helping raise awareness of the importance
of science and the arts in daily life and in
the sustainable development of our society.
The purpose of the BSI Swiss Architectural Award
is to recognize, and bring to public and media
attention, those architects who have made an
important contribution to contemporary architecture
and who have shown particular sensitivity to
the landscape and environmental context of their
designs. The only conditions are that candidates
must not be older than 50 and must have produced
at least three major works. The purpose of
the two conditions is to showcase architects with
experience but who have not yet gained widespread
international fame.
The award includes generous prize money, with
the winner due to receive CHF 100,000. Its prestige
does not derive solely from the authoritative
sponsorship of the Swiss Federal Office for
Culture and the Academy of Architecture of the
Università della Svizzera Italiana (the director of
which, Valentin Bearth, is a member of the award
jury), but also from the specific way in which the
candidates are selected. A group of internationally
renowned architects and architectural critics
act as advisors to make the selections. In its first
year, the award will benefit from the collaboration
of architects and thinkers of the calibre of
Laurent Beaudouin (France), Gonçalo Byrne
(Portugal), Alberto Campo Baeza (Spain), Massimo
Carmassi and Roberto Collovà (Italy), Kenneth
Frampton (United States), Dan S. Hanganu
(Canada), Yung Ho Chang (China), Kengo Kuma
(Japan), Paulo Mendes da Rocha (Brazil), Boris
Podrecca (Austria), Anant Raje (India) and Bruno
Reichlin (Switzerland).
This international group gave the award jury the
names of 30 candidates selected from professionals
around the world. The award jury is chaired
by Mario Botta and comprises Emilio Ambasz
(United States), Valentin Bearth (Switzerland),
Davide Croff (Italy) and Zhi Wenjun (China). The
cosmopolitan nature of the advisor group and the
award jury has led to a wide range of countries
and cultures being represented among the candidates
and ensures that the award will have international
visibility and relevance. The organization
of the award is being handled by the Archivio
del Moderno of the Academy of Architecture in
Mendrisio, with the collaboration of BSI AG. The
award will be presented at an award ceremony
at the Academy of Architecture on 13 November.
For the occasion there will also be an exhibition
of the works submitted by the candidates at the
Academy’s gallery. The exhibition along with
accompanying catalogue will offer an insightful
look at contemporary architecture, including the
current trends, topics and emerging architects.
This purpose of the initiative, as Mario Botta, the
chairman of the award jury and vice president of
the BSI Architectural Foundation, pointed out, is
to raise the profile of Mendrisio as a hub of excellence
in the field of architecture. Mendrisio is
the home of the Academy of Architecture of the
Università della Svizzera Italiana and the Archivio
del Moderno.
The BSI Swiss Architectural Award is a symbol
of the dialogue between cultural and financial
institutions. Together, these institutions have put
a high priority on analysing and redefining the
complex links between growth, environmental
awareness, responsible commitment and independent
critical thinking in individuals and in the
community.
sesso sembrava impossibile conquistare ruoli
di rilievo nel mondo professionale. Ma queste
difficoltà non hanno spaventato Graziella Martini
Giobbi, che grazie alla determinazione tipica
dei porlezzesi come lei, è riuscita a imporre in
«Bisogna impegnarsi e lavorare duramente
Nord. È proprio all’ombra della Madonnina
Commercio all’Università Cattolica e una in Giurisprudenza
Ancora
oggi Graziella Martini Giobbi si dedica a tutti
questi impegni anima e corpo. E il segreto di
tanta energia non va cercato lontano. «Non appena
posso – ci confida Graziella Martini Giobbi
– ritorno nella mia casa di Porlezza. Qui mi rilasso
e mi ritempro godendo della bellezza del
nostro lago».
Graziella Martini
Giobbi
A Successful Woman
in the Boom Years
Woman and successful manager; an unlikely
combination especially back in the 60s when the
fair sex found it virtually impossible to make it to
the top in the professional world. But such difficulties
didn’t scare Graziella Martini Giobbi, who
used her Porlezza determination to break into a
totally male world with her entrepreneurial flair
and feminine astuteness.
Her innate ability and wealth of experience acquired
as a company executive, paved the way
for her and her husband Massimo Martini to
found Macef, the prestiious international home
fair born in 1964.
That’s how Mrs Giobbi began her brilliant career
as exhibition manager. All par for the course from
a DOC inhabitant of Porlezza in love with Lake
Como and its inhabitants’ attitude of quietly getting
on with the job.
A woman who’s always been faithful to her motto:
“Knuckle down and work hard rather than talk.”
That’s how she’s been since childhood: still
young she left the tranquillity of her native Porlez-
za and moved to Milan with her family, following
her father employed by Ferrovie Nord.
She graduated right beneath the Madonnina in
Economics and Business Studies at the Catholic
University and in Law at the State University.
These brilliant academic achievements were just
the beginning of a professionally demanding
life which has never however interfered with her
family ties: mother of three children she has ably
reconciled her being a mother with her top job in
the Italian exhibition world. A pivotal role in combining
work with private life was played by her
husband in whose memory the Como manager
(who since 2006 has been Vice Presidente Vicario
di Fondazione Fiera Milano) has introduced
the ‘Macef Design Massimo Martini’ award for
up-and-coming designers. Even today Graziella
Martini Giobbi gives such commitments all she’s
got. And the secret of all this energy is close at
hand. “As soon as I can,” she confesses, “I go
home to my house in Porlezza, where I chill out
and enjoy our lovely lake”.
sempre ci offre nuovi oggetti, nuove idee e nuove
forme esportate nel mondo intero. Potremo
Oppure dell’accappatoio fatto
con una fibra ottenuta al 100% dal legno.
«Tutti oggetti che poi vengono effettivamente utilizzati
in casa», precisa l’amministratore delegato
di Fiera International, Sandro Bicocchi. Intorno
all’aspetto pratico e tangibile dell’universo casa,
utilizzando tecniche e metodi innovativi.
laboratorio dove creare.
innovative».
The future is the brainchild of innovation. This
principle will animate ‘Macef Lab’: a prestigious
international conference, responding to the great
demand for the dissemination of knowledge. The
event is planned for January in the evocative setting
of Villa Erba in Cernobbio.
The project was thought up and implemented by
Fiera Milano International, which will present and
illustrate the most significant examples of innovation
and research in the world of household accessories.
Seventeen companies will be showcasing
the results of their ongoing research work
in the pavilions of Cernobbio’s exhibition centre.
Thanks to Italian ingenuity the home sector has
always offered us new objects, ideas and forms
which are exported worldwide. So we’ll be able
to see the evolution of such basic items as chairs
or stools into the shapes of molar teeth or human
faces. Or else bathrobes made from 100% wood
fibres.
“All objects that are in fact used in the home,”
specifies Fiera International’s managing director
Sandro Bicocchi. Practical and tangible aspects
of the house will undergo comparison by operators
gleaning tips to improve by using innovative
techniques and methods.
“The event aims to build bridges of know-how
and stimulus between companies who follow
Macef’s lead, i.e. the world of the home,” explains
Sandro Bicocchi. “The Lab - a spin-off of Macef
- has been conceived as a full-blown creative
workshop. It must be a response to the current
consumer crisis, and provide the certainty that
businesses who develop and consolidate their
capacity to be innovative will come out on top.”
in particolare quelle tributarie.
autorità italiane e svizzere emanavano leggi e
regolamenti, lanciando anche proclami contro il
contrabbando; che la Guardia di Finanza continuava
a impegnare centinaia di uomini lungo
il confine in qualsiasi ora di ogni giorno dell’anno;
che i contrabbandieri continuavano a fare i
contrabbandieri arrivando a proporre, addirittura,
all’Accordo di Schengen.
storica.
Once upon a
time there was
the BORDER
When you look through old photos and their
captions it’s hard to believe (considering the
present state of things) that for many years along
the mountain ridges and footpaths connecting
Italy to Switzerland there was a state of conflict
between men donning Guardia di Finanza uniforms
and smugglers.
Very many years; more than a generation if we
cast our minds back to the 2nd half of the 1800s
when even dogs were used to smuggle goods,
and a young Finanziere thought of introducing
a State Fence along stretches of the border for
customs’ purposes. So many stories of people;
bitter stories continuing into the 20th century as
well. Indeed, in the 1900s smuggling was to become
even more ruthless causing large numbers
of deaths and accidents.
Many deaths both of Fiamme Gialle (also Canton
Ticino’s Border Guards were killed) and smugglers.
Sometimes it was snowslides, others it
was crevices or drowning in the lake, other times
again through being shot. And all of them had
clean consciences: the Finanzieres’ duty was to
stop Italy’s borders being used for all kinds of illegal
traffic, not just to protect the Inland Revenue
but also honest businessmen and traders who
produced and sold goods respecting national
laws, especially those regarding excise duty; the
A border stone viewed by Switzerland
smugglers who considered contraband activity
‘necessary’ because of the state of the Como
economy, leading to the emigration of some people
to more developed areas.
Contemporary reports remind us that the Italian
and Swiss Authorities used to bring out laws
and regulations, and even make official proclamations
regarding smuggling: that the Guardia
di Finanza were continuing to deploy hundreds
of men along the border all day every day; that
smugglers were carrying on with their activities
and even suggesting the legalisation of contraband,
as they involved handreds of local young
people along the border in this illegal phenomenon.
In my view you can’t help wondering
whether national or local Bodies couldn’t have
done more (and better), including small municipal
authorities along the border, those involved in
education, the business community, intellectuals
and priests.
For example, I’m thinking about greater local
economic growth providing more (and better)
job opportunities; and schools where a culture
of legality - i.e. respect for a community’s rules
- is absolutely pivotal for the education of young
students who will be the future adult citizens of a
Nation. And meanwhile over many years, many
men (and sometimes women too) in the border
area challenged the laws of the State and its Finanzieri,
many of whom from the centre/south of
Italy found themselves on unfamiliar mountains
attempting to do their duty as well as they could.
The onus was on poorly paid immigrants, above
all not to disgrace the uniform by acting dishonestly.
Shortly (on 1st November) Italy and Switzerland
will be ratifying the Schengen Agreement enabling
their citizens to move freely between the
two States. And although the two Countries will
still have separate customs regimes and different
currencies, this date will undoubtedly be of historic
importance.
Switzerland and EU Countries will share the
same Police data bases, controls and activities
envisaged by the Agreement in the border areas.
It’s a big step for both entities.
So looking optimistically upon 1st November as
the first of many measures through which goods
and capital will also enjoy freedom of circulation,
it can be stated that “once upon a time there was
a border.” But let’s not forget it.
Not out of superficial, off-the-cuff ‘romanticism’
but out of respect for the memory of all Those
who Died, whose destinies were curtailed, and
the suffering of those along the border - uniformed
and ununiformed alike - who lived unforgettable
and irrepeatable moments of their lives in
the story of this great frontier land.
Cento anni e sempre “verde”.
e Bellagio.
E parlando
78 79
di golf, viene naturale interrogarsi sull’abilità di
Vittorio Roncoroni: «Ho incominciato a giocare
a 58 anni!». Ricorda qualche aneddoto curioso
capitato al club? «Rammento quando, il Golf di
Menaggio, vinse il primo Campionato italiano
Juniores a squadre giocato proprio sul nostro
campo, sconvolgendo tutte le previsioni e meravigliando
maestri e incaricati federali.
Ponti, che è sempre nostra socia e George
Clooney, adorabile e sempre disponibile. Tutte
MENAGGIO & CADENABBIA
GOLF CLUB
AN EVER
GREEN
“GREEN”
Hundred years old and ever “green”. A curious
pun to introduce to you not a sprightly old man,
but one of the most beautiful and envied realities
of Lake Como. The Menaggio & Cadenabbia
Golf Club boasts a noteworthy history. Together
with Vittorio Roncoroni, the Club’s President, we
make a leap back in the past to find out news
and curiosities.
“The history of this club - explains Roncoroni - is
absolutely charming and it resembles a fairy tale.
By the end of 19th century, Lake Como was one
of the most popular destinations among the Anglo-Saxon
elite tourism, in particular the Menaggio,
Tremezzo, Cadenabbia and Ballagio areas.
On 10th January 1907, four English men, headed
by banker Henry John Mylius, met at the Victoria
hotel in Menaggio to set up just what it would
have become the Menaggio & Cadenabbia golf
club”. The Roncoroni brothers approached the
golf after the Second World War.
One of the brothers, Antonio, was keen on golf
to such an extent that he succeeded in convincing
the other family members to purchase the
Club, which occurred in 1961. Not just holes and
“green”, the Golf Club offers a rarity, i.e. the suggestive
library that is universally considered the
most precious concentrate of publications on
golf all over the world. It is for meticulous people,
there are as many as 1,200 volumes! And talking
about golf, it is natural to wonder about Vittorio
Roncoroni’s ability: “I started playing in 1959, but
the real passion arouse some years later when I
started winning the first competitions. Still nowadays,
I can keep handicap 5, which is praiseworthy
at 58 years!”. Can you remember some
curious anecdote that has occurred at the Club?
“I remember when the Menaggio Golf won the
1st Italian Juniores Team-Championship on our
course, thus upsetting all forecasts and astonishing
Federal teachers and operators. It was a
great satisfaction for the Club”.
At the Club, you can breathe an “Old English”
atmosphere, but who have been and who are
your “VIP”? “Many famous people have surely
visited Menaggio, such as Adenauer, a famous
German chancellor, Sofia Loren, Carlo Ponti’s,
i.e. her husband’s sister, who is still our member
and George Clooney, adorable and always on
hand. All the people working with the Club have
defined him “one of our folks” in dialect. The Golf
Club and our Lake, what have these two realities
in common?
“The Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club is an
integral part of Lake Como because it has any
way written a small part of history. Elegance,
class and the green of the grass recreate a small
“Como”. Our activity is a sports activity, but also
a tourist one and I like thinking that tourism will be
the winning card of the future development of the
Lake and our Club”.
e in pochi anni anche a Firenze, Roma e New
York.
portato a realizzare gioielli unici e a diffondere
il suo nome a livello mondiale. Attualmente
i prestigiosi saloni e negozi “Gianmaria
Buccellati” sono nei luoghi più esclusivi: in
Italia, a Milano, in Costa Smeralda, a Venezia,
a Capri e a Firenze; nel mondo a Parigi,
Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Hong Kong, Beverly
Hills, New York, Aspen, Londra e Mosca.
Wefts made of extremely pure gold inspired
by the renowned Venice, Bruges and Valenciennes
laces as well as by the Renaissance,
the Baroque and the Rococo. Its precious
jewels are known all over the world.
They are full-blown works of art made by highly
professional master artisans faithfully
using the techniques from the past. We are
talking about Gianmaria Buccellati, the Milanese
goldsmith currently continuing the tradition
of Contardo Buccellati, i.e. the family
founder who opened a shop in via degli Orafi
in Milan more or less in 1750, and about his
father Mario (1891-1965), the founder of the
modern family tradition who took over his
cousins’ activity in 1919 and continued it under
his own name by opening the first shop
near Teatro La Scala in Milan and just a few
years later also in Florence, Rome and New
York.
Gianmaria Buccellati has definitely inherited
his father’s creative spirit which has enabled
him to create unique jewels and to make his
name known all over the world.
Nowadays, their prestigious showrooms and
shops “Gianmaria Buccellati” are located in
very exclusive places: in Italy in Milan, in Costa
Smeralda, in Venice, in Capri and in Florence;
in the rest of the world in Paris, Tokyo,
Osaka, Nagoya, Hong Kong, Beverly Hills,
New York, Aspen, London and Moscow.
The business consists of a network of companies
located over the whole Peninsula.
The head office in Milan produces high-quality
jewelry. The “Buccellati Collection”which
is a more versatile and modern line, is produced
on the banks of of Lake Lario, in Valesterni
distaccamento Usa e consigliere delegato
retrospettiva nell’Assumption Belfry.
L’esposizione si chiuderà il prossimo 10
gennaio 2009. L’Assumption Belfry fu costruito
Gianmaria Buccellati verranno quindi esposte
quanto in modo naturale abbandoni i canali
più commerciali occupando le silenziose
e preziose sale espositive. Già in passato,
in quella occasione, illustrò fotograficamente
permanente, una accanto all’altra.
Jewels as works
of art
brona. Silverware is produced in Bologna.
Lastly, the creation of jewel-watches, active
since 2000, originated in Chiasso. So success
is rooted in the past, is being strengthened
in the present and will be certain target
in the future.
Nowadays, the collections of Buccellati
jewels, silverware and watches are “longedfor
items” because they combine various and
exclusive artisan techniques that contribute
to an extremely refined finish.
And their secret is obvious. Unlike many Firms
relying upon external designers and the
work of contract artisans, Buccellati preserves
the tradition of an Italian shop: Gianmaria
and his son, Andrea, personally design
their own creations that are manually executed
by skilful artisans in their workshops.
Andrea Buccellati represents the third gene-
84
ation and the future of the group. Besides
personally designing the collections with his
father, he checks the production of all jewels
and has recently been appointed president
and director of the USA spin-off branch as
well as Buccellati Holding Italia’s managing
director. However, the Buccellati group remains
a family concern, whose members all
contribute actively and concretely, in cooperation
with Gianmaria Buccellati.
His wife, Rosie, is active in the marketing department;
Gino, the eldest son, manages the
silverware company whereas Maria Cristina,
the daughter, is responsible for marketing
and trademark promotion.
Last of all, the group’s range of activities is
opening up to new horizons.
KREMLIN’S EXHIBITION
The Kremlin Museum in Moscow opened its
doors on the 25th of September to the Master
Goldsmith Gianmaria Buccellati, with
its personal retrospective exhibition in the
Assumption Belfry. The exhibition will close
on the next 10th of January 2009. The
Assumption Belfry was in fact built between
1523 and 1543 by an Italian architect and
borders on Ivan the Great’s bell tower, which
it is said, marks the precise geographic
centre of Moscow. Thus the creations of
Gianmaria Buccellati will be exhibited in an
architectural structure of Italian origin and
will be in the exact centre of this enchanting
capital to enable visitors to the exhibition to
relive the history of the famous dynasty of
jewelers. The exhibition is organized in such
a way that the peculiarity of the craftsmanship
and the uniqueness of the products are
the connecting thread of these 147 objects
carefully selected to describe their history
and evolution.
Objects realized by Mario Buccellati, generational
precursor and founder of the brand,
are displayed which today are part of the
family collection. Authentic museum pieces
brainchildren of the creative genius of Gianmaria
Buccellati and his son Andrea as well
as unique items gathered from private collections
to mark this exhibition. The honeycomb
creations, the most precious and coloured
stones optimally matched as if on a
painter’s palette, the most regal
collies and the incomparable
cups. One’s attention is mainly captured by
the fusion between creativity and technical
skill, which together give the gold and stones
the power to convey their magic to the
eyes. Once again, after the exhibition at the
Smithsonian Institution, Washington in 2000,
the cooperation with a museum emphasizes
how much Buccellati’ s history is “art”,
meant as homage to both creativity and ability,
and the natural way in which he rejects
the more commercial venues for silent and
prestigious exhibition halls. Already in the
past, Gianmaria Buccellati had the chance
to cooperate with some important Museums:
in 2006 he was present at Poldi Pezzoli
Museum to give a new lustre to the Gold Hall
and, on that occasion, illustrated via pictures,
all the manufacturing phases of a ring
with a lace effect, showing all the passion
and precision needed to complete that operation.
In 2007, to mark the Nineteenth Century
Goldsmith Hall opening at Palazzo Pitti
Museum, Gianmaria Buccellati donated two
brooches, one designed by his father Mario
and one he created himself which nowadays
are in a permanent exhibition, one next to
the other.
descrivere cosa esiste dietro, all’interno del
nostro gruppo.
Permettetemi
«Assolutamente no, abbiamo grande voglia di
club elitario, vogliamo crescere in maniera intelligente,
pulita, vera e corretta. E penso esistano
d’Este, Mario Pittorelli, l’avvocato Antonio Spallino
e monsignor Lorenzo Bataloni.
In platea ospiti d’eccezione: inserzionisti, associati
inedito personalizzato “Magic Lake”, firmato
Henry Cotton’s.
To expain Amici di Como, Silvio Santambrigio
Managing director of ‘Tre-P & Tre-Più’ and one of
the founder members of the association chooses
the analogy with a house.
“Nowadays many people can see what Amici di
Como does for our area, but I’d like to describe
what’s going on behind the scenes inside our
group. The first aspect,” Santambrogio goes on,
“might seem banal; unlike other associations no
Amici di Como members have vested interests or
seek exposure. Nobody is politically motivated.
Opportunists fall by the way, but everybody has
the same opportunity. We all feel equal and involved
in this great building site. We’ve already
laid the house’s foundations and the first concrete
slab.”
A first floor created through pleasurable discussion
and by listening to others’ ideas in an atmosphere
of tranquillity and serenity, and by implementing
many of these schemes for the area.
But let’s get back to the comparison with building.
In order to go up another floor what targets
have you set youselves?
“The project is simple and is already under way,
namely not only to get our members interacting,
but also the Amici di Como companies - all top
level entities. Let me give you an example; I used
to get my company’s catalogues printed in Turin,
but thanks to Amici di Como I got to know a
printing firm who can provide the same service in
Lomazzo. Why patronise Turin and not my area?
So I changed supplier and I’m very satisfied. A
small example, but there may be many others of
synergy and collaboration.”
So here’s Amici di Como’s second slab, created
by cementing relations between members and
greater involvement in a mission of patronage for
the area. But you surely don’t want to stop at the
first floor, Santambrogio?”
Absolutely not! We’re dying to get up to the roof
of the house, a house which upon completion will
become a pivotal vehicle of reference for our area
with an ever-open door for everyone. We’re not
an elitist club, we want to grow in an intelligent,
clean, true and correct manner. And I believe we
have the prerequisites and qualities to do this.”
But what’s the point of further growth?
“The third crucial element, the concrete making
the house is the intelligence of our businessmen
and women, the concreteness of our members
who put the experise that has made their companies
winners at the association’s disposal.
MAGIC LAKE - AMICI DI COMO NIGHT
objective reached. The association has in fact
supported the event for many years, over which
period the tie has become increasingly stronger
and indissoluable. Amici di Como wanted to be
in the front line promoting the event because it
shares Città dei Balocchi’s philosophy: the desire
to give Como - and in particular families and
children in the area - a magic Christmas via a
return to tradition, emphasising sharing through
being together, and the laying on of free events
for everyone.
propria – spiega Gian Maria Casella – abbiamo
azzurro. È stato necessario smontare i vecchi
telai e realizzarne dei nuovi». Il dipinto verrà
montato sui nuovi assi d’abete impermeabilizzati,
soltanto questa operazione durerà un mese
e mezzo.
and the restoration
of the Cathedral
Picture Gallery
During the summer the imporatant work of tutelage
of our artistic heritage started thanks to
Amici di Como. In collaboration with the Diocese
of Como this long-term project will restore canvasses
belonging to the Duomo’s picture Gallery.
Restoration work will be undertaken by Brescia
artist Gian Maria Casella, assisted by his son Alberto
and the rest of his staff. Magic Lake visited
the Casellas’ laboratory to see how the artistic
work was progressing.
“Before we started full-blown restoration,” explains
Gian Maria Casella, “we took detailed
photographs. Next we met Daniele Pescarmona
from Lombardy’s Fine Arts Supervisory Board,
A sinistra, Gian Maria Casella.
Sopra, il primo dei quadri oggetto
dell’intervento di restauro
Left, Gian Maria Casella. Above, the
first of paintings bought in restoration
who authorised the touch-up work.”
Casella’s restoration career began in 1960 and
has included two Raffaellos in Brescia, a Tiziano
and some Caravaggios in Paris and Rome. He
will commence with a 215 x130 cm oil canvas depicting
one of the four Lombard Bishop Saints.
The painting is in a precarious condition at the
moment. “In some areas the paint has broken
off and it’s been patched up; there are cuts and
holes in it. Luckily no radical reconstruction is required.
In that case restoration would be much
more complicated. I’ve been working on old
masters for 50 years and you’ll see the results
on this painting too. The sky in the picture has
turned black, but you just need to know how to
treat it to return it to blue. We had to dismantle the
old frames and make new ones.”
The painting will be mounted on new waterpfroofed
deal bording, which alone will take six
weeks. “Restoration work is long and meticulous,
but it’s very rewarding,” concludes Casella.
CLERICI TESSUTO
ARTIGIANI
del LUSSO
Alessandro Tessuto presidente
della Clerici Tessuto Spa
Alessandro Tessuto
Clerici Tessuto Spa president
L’azienda
America. Nel 2007 il fatturato dell’azienda è
stato di 58 milioni di euro, quello complessivo
del gruppo di 78 milioni.
Oggi l’accorto custode della preziosa memoria
familiare, contraddistinta dalla passione per
l’eccellenza, è Alessandro Tessuto, presiden-
te della società. Rientrato in azienda trent’anni
lusinghieri risultati. Accanto alla già esistente
tessitura sorge la nuova sede commerciale di
Grandate, viene potenziato l’apparato vendite
In
microfiliera serica d’Italia.
tessile comasco. È così nato un minidistretto
agile, flessibile, tempestivo in ogni sua componente,
dal filo al prodotto finito.
Nel territorio è ancorata una catena produttiva
full Italy in grado di raggiungere ogni orizzonte
commerciale: abbigliamento, cravatte, foulard,
arredamento, intimo e beachwear.
Ideaitalia, dell’Ufficio italiano Seta, dell’Associazione
politico, prima in Comune a Como, come consigliere
e poi come assessore provinciale con
delega alla formazione professionale e al Lavoro.
LUXURY
CRAFTSMEN
Luxury craftsmen employing a workforce of 650
(300 alone in the main branch) and with its own
full-blown estate; it’s agile, flexible and dynamic
in all aspects, from the first thread to the finished
product. That’s what Clerici Tessuto & C. Spa
have pulled off.
The company was founded nearly 100 years ago
thanks to the indefatigable tenacity of a special
lady, Rachele Clerici Tessuto who in 1922 decided
to invest in a little textile mill with hand-operated
machinery and looms. Over three generations,
piece after piece, the company has woven
the fabric of its own success.
Today Clerici Tessuto is leader in Italy and enjoys
international acclaim for its prestige and guarantee
of quality. Its production is characterised by
the weaving together of two crucial values: the
weft of experience and the warp of research.
With its consolidated long textile tradition, the
company has in fact launched itself into the future
through its total and utter commitment to innovation.
It currently turns out two and a half million
metres of fabrics a year, with a sales network
serving about 1,500 customers split into 45% in
Italy, 41% in (the rest of) Europe, 5% in the Far
East and 9% in North America.
In 2007 the company had a turnover of 58 million
euros, whereas the whole group’s was 78 million.
Today the careful custodian of precious family
memory which stands out for its striving after excellence
is Alessandro Tessuto, the chairman of
the company. Back in the firm 30 years ago after
working elsewhere, Tessuto took over straight
away as vice-chairman and sales manager for
108 109
Below, rotating printing tables and the
Italy and abroad. Ten years later, on his father’s
untimely death he took over the chairmanship,
and the group thanks to his drive and management
was soon to achieve brilliant results.
Next to the existing mill new commercial premises
were built in Grandate and the sales network
was enhanced by opening new offices in New
York and Paris; production diversification took
place through the setting-up of new tie, furnishing
and accessories divisions, and holdings were
acquired in leading entities of Como’s textile industry.
His predecessors’ entrepreneurial courage
has inspired him to take up a new challenge;
and his intuition means he’s already on to a winner.
Clerici Tessuto’s response to global competition
has been to go into new partnerships yet
retain its own identity. In an increasingly erratic
market the company has opted for a strategy of
perfect teamwork. Today in Como Italy’s first silk
micro-mill is operating flat out.
Alessandro Tessuto has taken up the management
of an operation that has networked the best
resources of high energy and expertise in Como’s
tetile sector. The resulting brainchild was an
agile, flexible, dynamic mini-estate in every way
from the first thread to the finished prouct.
The area now has a production anchorchain full
Italy covering a full panorama of market items:
clothing, ties, headscarfs, furnishing, underwear
and beachwear.
The links it consists of are synonyms of creative
flair and reliability. “High product quality and
craftsmanship are crucial if you want to stay at
the top of the market,” says Alessandro Tessuto.
“In our group we manage to create ‘tailor-made’
clothes for customers; so you need to be able to
guarantee service and flexibility, albeit with figures
and costs typical of a business with a workforce
of 650. Our vocation calls for high - indeed
very high - quality products: we no longer work
with figures, metres of cloth, but with sheer jewels
of cloth.”
What are the present and future challenges facing
Clerici Tessuto?
“We’re currently taking stock of our past,” the
chairman replies, “by electronically filing all our
sample collections which make up the history of
our own and other Como textile companies. In
Clerici Tessuto’s future I envisage further product
diversification so as to cover the whole textile
range, and then the development of household
accessories and suitcase items. I don’t rule out
the launch of a new company brand or the evolution
of an existing one for this purpose.”
And over the last few years Alessandro Tessuto
has been active in public office as well: former
chairman of the Consortium for Ideaitalia exports,
in the Ufficio italiano Seta, in the Associazione
Serica italiana, advisor to Federtessile, chairman
of Tessile di Como and now member of Premiere
Vision’s Strategy Committee. He’s been involved
in poitics too, first in Como Town Hall as an advisor
and then as provincial councillor in charge of
Work and Professional Training.
e Colombo Super Indios 32 hard top, presentate
all’entertainment.
magnifiche Villa Erba, Villa d’Este, Villa Carlotta
spiega Paolo Guarnieri, amministratore delegato
proprio questi canoni.
Circle Club
luxury
no limits
A new service on Lake Como: motorboats, cars,
helicopters and villas on loan “Luxury you use but
don’t own.” This is the philosophy underpinning
the CircleClub venture whose new motorboats
were showcased in July at Moregallo Sporting
Club when a unique service was offered to all
those wishing to join this exclusive club.
The evening highlighted the elegance of the craft
bobbing on the waters of the lake and the prestige
of leading makes of automobiles in a truly
unique setting. CircleClub will be acting as top
‘private banker’ by offering luxury goods and a
wide range of services: prestige cars, private jets
and helicopters, villas and chalets in exclusive
locations, collectors’ works of art and, starting
today in collaboration with Eclectica, even new
Chris Craft Corsair 33’ and Colombo Super Indios
32 hard tops given a sneak preview during
the evening.
This collaboration with the new company will en-
able Lake Como to be further exploited regarding
all types of travel and entertainment services. By
paying an enrolment fee of 20,000 euros members
will be entitled to a 1000 redeemable points
membership card allowing them to use numerous
facilities.
The nationwide CircleClub too has wanted to become
involved with Lake Como - now recognised
as being the homeland of excellence - by exploiting
its most prestigious and luxurious lakeside
sites. Members will in fact be able to enjoy dream
evenings by going to magnificent Villa Erba, Villa
d’Este, Villa Carlotta and Serbelloni on board one
of our exclusive craft.
“CircleClub just couldn’t remain indifferent to
the charm and elegance of such spots as these,
which every year attract big names from the
world of fashion, institutions and the international
jet set,” explains CircleClub’s Managing Director
Paolo Guarnieri.
“Our philosophy in fact is that of always offering
the best to our members year round, and a weekend
or holiday on Lake Como at this time of the
year is pure delight.” So as to make interest in the
Como area even more concrete and hands-on,
CircleClub has asked if it can give its members a
complimentary copy of ‘Magic Lake’ in recognition
of the excellence, elegance and prestige of a
magazine which through its pages recounts the
essence of our land via these very canons.
Perché come
detto, Bruno Abbate aveva amici ovunque. «Posso
vicino a tutti i suoi familiari».
e sportivo lariano è ancora vivo e palpitante.
Grazie a lui, ho capito fino in fondo quanto è bello
Rosa Blu Onlus che, affiancata all’Anfas,
a quella già esistente.
«Abbiamo ricevuto diverse contributi dagli Abbate
«Ci
luce Bruno».
Remembering
Bruno
Last sumer, on a day in July, Bruno Abbate passed
away. He would have turned 57 later that same
month. Abbate was well known in Italy and the
world. The sporty and entrepreneurial man from
Como had an indissoluble bond with “Primatist”,
the company based in Grandola ed Uniti - a place
halfway between Lario and Ceresio - a leader in
the building of recreation boats. But Bruno Abbate
was much more. In his showcase he had laurels
of every kind, having been a champion of motorboating
in the ’80s. Of all of his successes, one of
the greatest was his European title of Offshore First
Class. After the disappearance of his son Giudino
in 1995, due to a road accident in Argegno, Bruno
Abbate became the promoter of the “Special
Team” dedicated to the memory of his son. With
this team, during the season of the F1 motorboating,
he raced the nine time champion of the world,
Guido Capellini, who had always been tied to the
Abbate family.
The racing number of Mariano Comense is 74, the
year of Guidino’s birth. At the funeral, celebrated at
the church of Sant’Abbondio in Mezzegra (which
could not hold all of the people who came for their
last goodbyes) there were people from the lake
as well as famous people. This is because Bruno
Abbate had friends evryhwere, not only on his beloved
Lake Como. “I can say that I not only lost a
friend, I lost an older brother”, was the comment
of the nine time champion of motorboating, Guido
Cappellini when he heard the news about Abbate’s
passing. “Bruno was always a step ahead of us,
with his brilliant ideas. He did great things and
he would have been able to do even more if he
had had time”. Staying in the world of motors, on
the Brno slopes, in the Czech Republic, even Loris
“Capirex” Capirossi, the 35 year old who has
competed in just shy of 300 motorcycle racing
competitions, wanted to remember Bruno Abbate
when he stepped up to the podium as a winner
for the 99 th time during the 19th world competition.
“Bruno always phoned me after every competition
to ask me how things had gone and to encourage
me. For this reason, when I learned about his passing
while in America, I thought about dedicating an
important win to him. It is what I am doing here in
Brno: this third place is for him, a true friend. I am
close to all of his family members”. But the Italian
motorcycle champion’s tale continues: “I have only
great memories of him. He was a big-hearted person.
I miss him a lot. I went to his commemoration
in Sardinia, an island that I came to know thanks
to Bruno, but it wasn’t the same. Even Sardinia
was less pretty without him.” His relationship with
the family continues. “I was with them twice after
saying goodbye to Bruno, the friendly relationship
with the Abbates is special. Thanks to Bruno I also
knew your splendid lake. He opened the door to
Como for me. He didn’t only make boats. He was
a unique person.”
The world of sport and that of show business. Even
if it is difficlut to understand Giorgio Faletti - the
singer, cabaret man, actor, and writer of bestsellers
amongst other things. Even he was a good friend
of Abbate and his memory of the entrepreneur and
a Larian sportsman is still alive. “Bruno taught me
to love the sea - he says - When I met him I was given
confirmation that the journey is almost always
more important than the end goal. Thanks to him, I
understand how beautiful it is to navigate, whatever
the weather conditions and I was able to realize
in a definitive way that that is a a real moment of
peace, rather than the arrival into a secure port.
Given that I am a dreamer, I hope that where Bruno
is now there is a calm sea ahead and behind, a
wake of a boat, a friendly wind, and a long journey
to the finish line with a smile on his lips. An eternal
instant, a brief moment forever.
But Bruno was, above all, a socially active person,
as attested to by Giulio Sala, President of the Fondazione
Rosa Blu Onlus that, along with Anfas, is
collecting money to build a house for the disabled
with 40 openings in Grandola ed Uniti, next to the
one already in existence. An effort - the first stone
was set in April - that will eventually lead to a disbursement
of between 5 and 6 million euro. “We
have received many contributions from the Abbates,”
says the President.
“His family has always honoured our foundation
that takes care of the psycho-physically disabled
who we help in our residential centre in Grandola
ed Uniti. We have a waiting list of over 20 people
who would like to come here and we are therefore
building a new centre that is larger.”
A structure to which the president of Inter, Massimo
Moratti, has also contributed, like the before-mentioned
Abbate family who, for Bruno’s funeral requested
that donations be made to the foundation
instead of flowers. “In the past, in Guido’s memory,
the Abbates also gave a large contribution, so
much that we dedicate the already existing building’s
gym to Bruno’s son. We will do the same with
Bruno, probably dedicating the laboratory to him. I
hope that others follow their example.”
“It is difficult to talk about Bruno using the past”
Jerry Calà is moved when he talks about his friend.
He opens the book of memories, starting with the
last one, when in the hospital Jerry Calà told him “I
don’t know if I have given you everything you gave
me”. “We met in Sardinia at the end of the ‘80ies
and for me it was just like meeting the sea. I learned
the passion for the boat from him, how to be out in
the sea and how to respect it. Our collaboration
continued for many years, I was his testimonial”.
Jerry with Abbate and Vittorio Grancia invented
the Primatist Trophy.”We were often in touch, with
his strong will we always created something”. Various
the episodes connected with the movie, in the
movie “Abbronzantissimi” Jerry Calà lives on a
Primatist 34. “It was the same as the one he gave
me” he explains. Jerry wrote also a poem for Bruno
Abbate’s family, we publish it for the first time.
