<strong>The</strong> Rupert Barneby Award<br />

<strong>The</strong> New York <strong>Botanic</strong>al Garden is pleased to announce that Jason Alexander, currently at the Department of Botany & Plant<br />
Pathology, Oregon State University, is the recipient of the Rupert Barneby Award for the year 2003. Mr.Alexander will be<br />
studying the systematics of various species of Astragalus in the western United States.<br />
<strong>The</strong> New York <strong>Botanic</strong>al Garden now invites applications for the Rupert Barneby Award for the year 2004. <strong>The</strong> award of<br />
US$ 1,000.00 is to assist researchers to visit <strong>The</strong> New York <strong>Botanic</strong>al Garden to study the rich collection of Leguminosae.<br />
Anyone interested in applying for the award should submit their curriculum vitae, a detailed letter describing the project for<br />
which the award is sought, and the names of 2-3 referees. Travel to the NYBG should be planned for sometime in the year<br />
2004. <strong>The</strong> application should be addressed to Dr. James L. Luteyn, Institute of Systematic Botany, <strong>The</strong> New York <strong>Botanic</strong>al<br />
Garden, 200th Street and Kazimiroff Blvd., Bronx, NY 10458-5126 USA, and received no later than December 1, 2003.<br />
Announcement of the recipient will be made by December 15th.<br />
Leucaena Genetic Resources Handbook available on the Web<br />

At the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Oxford, UK, work is underway to convert Colin Hughes's Leucaena<br />
Genetic Resources Handbook into an e-book that will be available in English by June 2003 as well as Spanish at a later date.<br />
Once the conversion is complete the document will be found on the Oxford University Herbaria website<br />

English Summary<br />
<strong>The</strong> 5 th satellite meeting of Latin America legume research was held in conjunction with the 8 th Latin American <strong>Botanic</strong>al<br />
Congress and the 2 nd Colombian <strong>Botanic</strong>al Congress, Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, 15 October 2002. <strong>The</strong> meeting was<br />
chaired by FORTUNATO, with MIOTTO acting as secretary. <strong>The</strong>re were 26 participants, who discussed various legume<br />
topics including Rupert Barneby´s Obituary (1911-2000) and a summary of <strong>The</strong> Fourth International Legume Conference,<br />
July 2001, Canberra, Australia presented by FORTUNATO.<br />
A resume of the research was given for the following countries at the meeting: Argentina (represented by PALACIOS and<br />
FORTUNATO), Bolivia and Ecuador (represented by NEILL), Brazil (represented by MIOTTO) and Colombia (represented<br />
by FORERO and QUINONEZ).<br />
<strong>The</strong> International Scientific Agencies and Foundations which fascilitate cooperation and offer financial support to Latin<br />
America researchers especially those working on legumes gave a presentation.<br />
<strong>The</strong> next satellite meeting on Legume Studies will be held during the 9 th Latin American <strong>Botanic</strong>al Congress, Dominican<br />
Republic in 2006. FORTUNATO has been invited to coordinate the next Latin American Legume Symposium by the<br />
Organizing Committee of the 9 th Latin American <strong>Botanic</strong>al Congress<br />
Introducción<br />
En el marco del VIII Congreso Latinoamericano de Botánica — II Congreso Colombiano de Botánica (Cartagena de Indias,<br />
Colombia) se efectuó la V Reunión Satélite de especialistas en Leguminosas el día 15 de octubre de 2002 (14,30-16 hs),<br />
continuando con la modalidad iniciada a partir de 1986 durante el IV Congreso Latinoamericano de Botánica (Medellín,<br />
Colombia). Esta reunión fue dedicada en homenaje a la memoria del Dr. Rupert Barneby (1911-2000).<br />
