TEXTILE INNOVATIONS Linen, air on the skin ——— 02 01 Whether it is “woven wind”, its Japanese nickname, or light as a breeze and with a double skin as in architecture, linen – a purveyor of intimacy – flows towards new textures and spidery effects – an eternal return to the source of its history. Weavers everywhere, undress me… 01. Rosy by Stella Cadente, houndstooth, 100% linen / pied de poule 100% lino 02. Enamore, Mon Cheri Bralette silk and hemp / seta e canapa As soon as we evoke the universe of linen, one name leaps forward. She doesn’t hide herself, linen has been part of her since her first summer lingerie collections, her fragile nighties and floaty panties but also her lightweight corsets and linen stockings… Now, Chantal Thomass may be surprised – as we are – thanks to these stretch fabrics and refined, technical linen laces which have been developed to give linen a “sophistication it doesn’t necessarily have” in our collective unconscious. Second skin linen invites itself into collections of weavers and lacemakers at the cutting edge of innovation. Burn-outs with dotted swiss motifs (Siegl), linen-cotton bobbin tulle (Sophie Hallette), linen lace re-embroidered with mohair (Solstiss), silk linen, linen with iridescent lurex yarn (Tejidos Bages), a glen plaid burn-out with panther effect, houndstooth linen… all these fabrics in the Linen Dream Lab collections were given to Stella Cadente, who returns to her roots by developing a capsule collection with the technicians at Rosy (note: part of the Wolf Group for whom Stella Cadente is artistic director, one of her many design and interior design activities). For Stella Cadente, “linen is different: it is the idea of a nude body under linen sheets”. This new expression, this experiment with linen, takes us back to the origins of women’s under-garments in the 50’s and 60’s. Because although “linen has few stretch qualities”, this deliciously successful experiment gave her the idea “to rummage about and work in advance, hand-in-hand” with weavers and finishers. If linen, an incomparably sensual fiber, provides a daily dose of well-being, close to our skin’s inherent needs, its modernity naturally rids it of environmental pollutants linked with other traditional lingerie fibers. Like the delicate, ethical silk and hemp line from Enamore, British lingerie’s “enfant terrible”, who provocatively undresses contemporary pin-ups in chic undergarments certified without CO 2 . “Il lino non fu mai tanto figlio dell’aria quanto in una delle sue declinazioni più misteriose: il pizzo.” Claude Fauque, Secrets de lin, ed. La Découverte et Syros, 1997 Quando si evoca l’universo della lingerie, un nome sorge spontaneo. Il lino le appartiene sin dalle primissime collezioni, lingerie estiva, certo, per le sottovesti delicate e le culotte fluttuanti, ma anche, da tempo, per la corsetteria leggera, le calze di lino… D’ora in poi, Chantal Thomass potrà stupirsi, e stupire noi, grazie a questi materiali estensibili e ai nuovi pizzi di lino sofisticati e tecnici, sviluppati recentemente per infine conferire al lino una “sofisticatezza che non possiede necessariamente per sua natura” nel nostro inconscio collettivo. Il lino seconda pelle entra nelle collezioni delle aziende tessili e dei produttori di ricami più innovativi. Devorato con motivi plumetis (Siegl), tulle Bobbin in lino-cotone (Sophie Hallette) o pizzo di lino ricamato in mohair (Solstiss), lino seta, lino e filo di lurex iridescente (Tejidos Bages), Principe di Galles devorato effetto pantera, lino pied de poule… Tutti questi tessuti, provenienti dalle collezioni Linen Dream Lab, sono stati affidati a Stella Cadente, che torna quindi alle sue radici con la creazione di una linea pilota sviluppata in collaborazione con i tecnici di Rosy (nota: gruppo Wolf del quale Stella Cadente è direttrice artistica, tra le sue innumerevoli attività di stilista o di decoratrice di interni). Per Stella Cadente “il lino è tutta un’altra cosa: è l’idea di un corpo nudo avvolto in drappi di lino”. Questa nuova espressione, questa sperimentazione del lino ci riporta alle origini della corsetteria degli anni ‘50-60. Perché se “il lino resta poco elastico”, questa esperienza, deliziosamente riuscita, avrà almeno coccolato l’idea “di sperimentare, di lavorare a monte, mano nella mano” con tessitori e finitori. È esattamente la vocazione del Linen Dream Lab: offrire percorsi di esplorazione, fonti di ispirazione alle quali i creatori possono attingere senza sosta per sviluppare inedite interpretazioni del lino. Se il lino, fibra sensuale come nessun’altra, ci procura la nostra dose di benessere, più vicino alle necessità della pelle, la sua modernità è libera per natura dagli inquinamenti ambientali legati ad altre fibre tradizionalmente utilizzate nel settore dell’intimo. Ad esempio, la delicata linea in seta e canapa della collezione etica del marchio Enamore, enfant terrible della lingerie inglese, che sveste le pin-up di oggi con capi chic certificati privi di CO 2 . — 04 —
