UPDATED LISTINGS OF FLORA AND FAUNA SPECIESINCLUDED IN THE CITES APPENDICES DISTRIBUTED IN CENTRAL AMERICA AND DOMINICAN REPUBLIC3. FAUNA ResearchFor fauna, the the work done by IRBio was the source of information from which the verification of species listed inthe CITES Appendices, the review of listings obtained from the countries, and the literature review were conducted.Panama and Belize listings created in this process were included.Species were verified using the database of the IUCN Red List of Threatened SpeciesTM (http://www.iucnredlist.org); for arachnids, the World Spider Catalog (http://research.amnh.org/); for Cnidaria, The Cnidarian Tree of LifeProject (http://cnidtol.com/), Anthozoa.com (http://www.anthozoa.com/); for reptiles, the Reptiles Database (http://tigr.org/reptiles/species.php); for amphibians, the Amphibian Species of the World 5.3 (http://research.amnh.org/vz/herpetology/amphibia/); for birds, the Avibase - Bird Checklists of the World (http://avibase.bsc-eoc.org/), BirdLifeInternational (http://www.birdlife.org/datazone/species/index.html), and the American Ornithologists’ Union(http://www.aou.org/) were verified; for mammals, Mammal Species of the World (http://www.bucknell.edu/msw3/);and for marine organisms in general, the World Register of Marine Species WoRMS (http://www.marinespecies.org/),and additionally, the references that may be found in the Bibliography section.4. Standardized NomenclatureIn this process and according to CITES, it is necessary to standardize scientific names since there is lack of standardizedreference work with appropriate information. This decreases the application of CITES in the conservation of speciesincluded in the Appendices. Changes must be evaluated by the Fauna and Flora Committees in order to determine ifchanges will alter the scope of the protection of any species. The different taxa are not included in the lists when changes are made, since such nomenclature must be adopted by theCdP according to Res. 12.11 (Rev COP14). An example of this is the nomenclature for the Dendrobatidae spp. familyand the Cattleya spp genus, which appear with that nomenclature in the listings.5. Data IntegrationThis document was created once the databases were reviewed. It is important to mention that this document containsgeneral listings only. The main body of the work and the more useful portion is integrated in databases contained in theCD-ROM. It is expected that authorities will use the databases in a convenient way, but most importantly, that eachone is able to review each species in order to correct and increase the listings.ResultsThe number of species (which include sub-species and varieties) of fauna and flora according to CITES Appendices areincluded in Exhibit 2. A total of 62 fauna species was found in Appendix I; 507 species in Appendix II, with cnidariabeing the most common. Appendix III shows 26 species, for a total of 595 fauna spp in the Region and the DominicanRepublic.A total of 2982 flora species were found, the larger number from the Orchidaceae family, representing approximately90% of the species in the Region and the Dominican Republic. They are distributed in 13 families of which 26 speciesare in Appendix I, and four in Appendix III; the majority of them are in Appendix II.Exhibit 2.
