SULLE TRACCE DI DANTEIN TOSCANAIl Trecento fiorent<strong>in</strong>o, che con Giotto vede fiorire un nuovol<strong>in</strong>guaggio figurativo, assiste con <strong>Dante</strong> anche alla nascitadella nuova l<strong>in</strong>gua letteraria. Il Passaporto propone untragitto attraverso le memorie dantesche di Firenze e dellaToscana, seguendo anche la fortuna iconografica della suafisionomia attraverso dip<strong>in</strong>ti e sculture. Secondo Boccaccio«il suo volto fu lungo, il naso, aquil<strong>in</strong>o, e gli occhi anzi grossiche piccioli», «il colore era bruno, e i capelli e la barbaspessi, neri e crespi, e sempre nella faccia mal<strong>in</strong>conico epensoso». Spesso i ritratti di <strong>Dante</strong> non rispettano questecaratteristiche, ma ricorrente è il naso aquil<strong>in</strong>o che tuttaviale immag<strong>in</strong>i più antiche non avallano. <strong>In</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>footsteps</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dante</strong><strong>in</strong> <strong>Tuscany</strong>The 14 th century <strong>in</strong> Florence saw <strong>the</strong> birth not only <strong>of</strong> a newfigurative style <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> art <strong>of</strong> Giotto but also <strong>of</strong> a new literarylanguage <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> works <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dante</strong>. This passport takes <strong>the</strong>reader on a tour <strong>of</strong> sites associated with <strong>Dante</strong> <strong>in</strong> Florenceand <strong>Tuscany</strong> while simultaneously track<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> popularity <strong>of</strong>his image <strong>in</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g and sculpture. Bocaccio tells us that“his face was long, his nose aquil<strong>in</strong>e, and his eyes largerra<strong>the</strong>r than smaller”, “his complexion was dark, his hair andbeard thick, black and cr<strong>in</strong>kly, his gaze always melancholyand thoughtful”. 1mUSEO Casa di <strong>Dante</strong>“House <strong>of</strong> <strong>Dante</strong>” MuseumLa Casa di <strong>Dante</strong> è stataricostruita su antiche mura etorre appartenute ai Giuochi,anche se la casa dove il poetanacque e passò parte dellavita era proprio nei pressidella Torre della Castagna.Già nel 1866 si cercò dilocalizzare l’abitazione, masolo nel 1911 il Comune<strong>in</strong>iziò i lavori, su progettodell’architetto GiuseppeCastellucci, demolendo unedificio d’angolo per darluogo a una piazzetta. Laricostruzione è arbitraria,ma lo stile neomedievale dàforma all’idea di una Firenzetrecentesca. Nel 1965, <strong>in</strong>occasione del VII centenariodella nascita di <strong>Dante</strong>,il complesso fu affidatodal Comune alla UnioneFiorent<strong>in</strong>a che vi istituì ilMuseo della Casa di <strong>Dante</strong>.All’esterno fu posto un bustobronzeo del poeta opera diAugusto Rivalta (1837-1925).Il museo si articola su trepiani che scandiscono imomenti fondamentali dellavita del poeta e della Firenzeda lui vissuta. The outside<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g was adornedwith a bronze bust <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>poet by Augusto Rivalta(1837–1925). 2*TORRE DELLA CASTAGNAQuesta antichissimatorre, già adibita a difesadell’adiacente BadiaFiorent<strong>in</strong>a, fu dal 1282residenza del supremomagistrato dei Priori delleArti, prima della costruzionedel <strong>Palazzo</strong> della Signoria.I Priori, che al tempo di <strong>Dante</strong>erano sei (uno per ciascun“sestiere” <strong>in</strong> cui era divisala città) dopo aver prestatogiuramento nella chiesadi San Pier Scheraggio, eper tutto il periodo dellamagistratura, cioè per duemesi, erano r<strong>in</strong>chiusi nellaTorre della Castagna. <strong>Dante</strong>fu priore dal 15 giugno al 15agosto 1300, ma forse nonabitò <strong>in</strong> questa torre.This ancient tower, orig<strong>in</strong>allyerected to protect <strong>the</strong>adjacent Badia Fiorent<strong>in</strong>a,became <strong>the</strong> residence <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> supreme magistrate <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Priori delle Arti <strong>in</strong> 1282prior to <strong>the</strong> construction<strong>of</strong> <strong>Palazzo</strong> della Signoria(now <strong>Palazzo</strong> Vecchio). Nellacappella della MaddalenaGiotto e la sua équipe hannoaffrescato – probabilmentefra 1334 e 1337 – un ciclocon il Paradiso, l’<strong>In</strong>fernoe le Storie di san GiovanniBattista e della Maddalena,lasciandovi, <strong>in</strong> basso adestra, il più antico ritratto di<strong>Dante</strong>. 13*Monumento a <strong>Dante</strong>*Monument to <strong>Dante</strong>Il 14 maggio 1865, nel sestocentenario della nascita,ebbe luogo lo scoprimentodi un monumento a <strong>Dante</strong>Alighieri posto al centrodi piazza Santa Croce.<strong>In</strong> un’Italia che ancoranon aveva completatol’unificazione, il monumentoacquisiva particolaresignificato poiché il poetaaveva immag<strong>in</strong>ato l’unitàl<strong>in</strong>guistica e politica dellapenisola. Già nel 1864Firenze, futura capitale delRegno, affidò al ferrareseEnrico Pazzi (1819-1899) l’esecuzione di unmonumento a <strong>Dante</strong>, che loscultore eseguì chiedendosolo le spese vive. Nel 1968,a seguito dell’alluvione, ilmonumento è stato trasferitosulla s<strong>in</strong>istra della facciatadella chiesa.A monument to <strong>Dante</strong>Alighieri was unveiled <strong>in</strong><strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> Piazza SantaCroce on 14 May 1865 tomark <strong>the</strong> six hundredthanniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> poet’sbirth. <strong>In</strong> an Italy not yet fullyunited, <strong>the</strong> monument wasespecially significant because<strong>the</strong> poet had envisaged <strong>the</strong>pen<strong>in</strong>sula’s l<strong>in</strong>guistic andpolitical unification <strong>in</strong> hiswork. Nell’opera di StefanoRicci (1765-1837), <strong>in</strong>terpretetoscano del neoclassicismocanoviano, il poeta è seduto<strong>in</strong> atteggiamento pensososopra un cippo con laCommedia sulle g<strong>in</strong>occhia,e sotto di lui piangonol’Italia e la Poesia. UNA GRANDE CASA:STORIA DELLA FAMIGLIAE DEL PALAZZO STROZZI<strong>In</strong> questa piccola esposizione, o “muse<strong>in</strong>o”, primo nucleodel futuro Museo di <strong>Palazzo</strong> <strong>Strozzi</strong>, brevi testi <strong>in</strong> italianoe <strong>in</strong>glese raccontano le vicende di personaggi, illustranoopere d’arte e famosi eventi collegati alla famiglia <strong>Strozzi</strong> eal loro palazzo: una storia strettamente connessa con quelladi Firenze. Otto pannelli tracciano la storia della famigliadalle orig<strong>in</strong>i f<strong>in</strong>o al Novecento. La sala accoglie il grandemodello ligneo del <strong>Palazzo</strong> (attribuito a Giuliano da Sangalloo a Benedetto da Maiano), rimasto proprietà degli <strong>Strozzi</strong>e conservato nel <strong>Palazzo</strong> f<strong>in</strong>o alla vendita dell’edificio,avvenuta nel 1937. L’albero genealogico degli <strong>Strozzi</strong> relativoal ramo di Filippo il Vecchio aiuta il visitatore a comprenderela complessa storia della famiglia dal Medioevo f<strong>in</strong>o algiorno d’oggi, mentre i bamb<strong>in</strong>i saranno affasc<strong>in</strong>ati da brevididascalie loro espressamente dedicate. A great House:<strong>the</strong> <strong>Strozzi</strong> familyand <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>Palazzo</strong><strong>In</strong> this small exhibition or muse<strong>in</strong>o, <strong>the</strong> first step towardsa future <strong>Palazzo</strong> <strong>Strozzi</strong> Museum, short illustrated bil<strong>in</strong>gualtexts tell <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> historical figures, works <strong>of</strong> art andfamous events associated with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Strozzi</strong> family and <strong>the</strong>irFlorent<strong>in</strong>e palazzo – a history <strong>in</strong>timately bound up with <strong>the</strong>history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> city itself. Eight panels trace <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>Strozzi</strong> family from its beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs to <strong>the</strong> 20th century.The exhibition also features <strong>the</strong> large wooden model <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>palazzo attributed to Giuliano da Sangallo or Benedetto daMaiano, kept by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Strozzi</strong> family before <strong>the</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g was sold<strong>in</strong> 1937.
