Itwas the burial place of thePortinari, including Dante’sbeloved Beatrice, whileDante himself may havewed Gemma Donati here.It houses the Marriage ofBeatrice Portinari, painted byRaffaello Sorbi in 1928.Via Santa Margherita 2Il Museo Nazionale delBargello ha sede dal 1865 nelPalazzo che fu costruito allametà del Duecento, comeresidenza del Capitano delPopolo e del Podestà. Nellacappella della MaddalenaGiotto e la sua équipe hannoaffrescato – probabilmentefra 1334 e 1337 – un ciclocon il Paradiso, l’Infernoe le Storie di san GiovanniBattista e della Maddalena,lasciandovi, in basso adestra, il più antico ritratto diDante. Il ciclo fu coperto conuno strato di intonaco dopoil 1574, quando la cappellafu modificata e adibita aprigione e dispensa.
