BRAND IDENTITY
When a company like Flexform
reaches the point of having a catalogue
containing products recognized
as timeless classics in the
world of high-end furnishings, it
is time to take a moment to think
about the commitment and dedication
with which a solid, experienced
family management, at the
helm of the firm for over fifty years,
has pursued corporate policies
oriented more towards reform than
revolution, steering clear of excess
and never straying from a path of
certainties and careful reflection.
Flexform is an Italian industrial
company that relies on deeply
rooted expertise in the production
of finely crafted sofas and
furnishings, with an innate focus
on design culture, a past of outstanding
collaborations with the
best designers and creative talents,
a capillary, efficient international
commercial and distribution
network, and major investments
in the areas of communication,
research and innovation.
The company’s identity and success
are based on a system of
shared values that form the true
core of the corporate project: Made
in Italy, Timeless Elegance,
Comfort, Quality, Coherent Design,
Contemporary Character,
Beauty, Durability.
This is the strategic map that has
brought Flexform to its position,
recognized all over the world,
as one of the historic brands of
Made in Italy of the highest quality
in the field of furnishings.
THE STORY OF A FAMILY
BUSINESS
Flexform’s history is a family history.
Now at the third generation,
FLEXFORM, I VALORI
e all’innovazione.
Made in Italy, Eleganza senza tempo, Comfort,
design Made in Italy.
Flexform was founded in the furniture
manufacturing district of
Brianza, in Northern Italy. This
is where the unique worldwide
phenomenon of design Made in
Italy began, in the 1960s. A territory
where the history of many
small crafts workshops working
with wood, metal and upholstery
since the early 1900s intertwines
with that of the great masters
of Italian design, trained in the
School of Architecture in nearby
Milan. The Flexform story is part
of this historical context.
In 1959 the Galimberti brothers
started a crafts workshop, which
they called “Flexform di Galimberti.”
They opened their first streetfront
showroom, displaying sofas
and armchairs that found their
way, in the postwar era, into elegant
buildings in Milan, villas overlooking
Lake Como, and even the
foyer of Teatro alla Scala.
Their sons transformed the workshop
into an industrial facility,
and in 1967 Flexform became a
joint-stock company. Intuition
prompted the family to work
with the leading designers of
the time: Joe Colombo, Asnago-Vender,
Cini Boeri, Rodolfo
Bonetto and many others. With
the young architect Antonio Citterio,
during those same years
Flexform embarked on a path
of professional growth that has
continued without interruption to
the present, for over forty years.
The decade of the 1970s marks a
decisive turning point in the firm’s
conception of products. Avoiding
repetition of past styles, the
production became increasingly
original and contemporary.
“The family is a great value, an
important legacy of resources,
stimuli, knowledge. Roots allow
us to look to the future. Without
awareness of our history we cannot
imagine future scenarios. It
is true that only he who knows
where he comes from can know
where he is heading. It is an honor
and a commitment for all of
us in the third generation to continue
the work of our predecessors.
To keep alive what we like
to call the “we attitude,” i.e. the
awareness that it is the team
– and therefore the brand –
that is the real player, not the
individual. No soloists, but a
group that thinks in the first-person
plural, never the singular.
The challenge is to keep intact
that “expedition behavior” – to
use a term borrowed from Jeff
Ashby, the Space Shuttle commander
– namely the altruistic
and generous behavior typical
of mountain climbing expeditions,
where valuing the team
above all other concerns is the
key to success. So continuing
to think in collective terms for the
benefit of the brand is the most
important challenge for our family
business.”
In the 1970s the family understood
the importance of exploring
new markets, beyond
the national borders. They
approached Europe, where the
German-speaking countries, in
particular, demonstrated great interest
in their understated, elegant
and comfortable sofas, especially
in Germany. Overseas growth was
also constant and unstoppable,
as Flexform gained visibility in the
most exclusive furniture stores in
America, Asia and Australia. With
the advent of the new millennium,
the company launched a program
Continuare a pensare
varcando i confini nazionali.
nei cinque continenti, fiori all’occhiello dell’azienda.
L’ECCELLENZA DEL MADE IN ITALY
Un’identità di valore tutta italiana. Una storia di successo tutta italiana. Un solo paese,
l’Italia, dove i prodotti sono think&made. Un’unica sede produttiva, a Meda, dove tutto
viene prodotto a Km zero. Tutto è Made in Italy, tutto è Made in Meda.
“La famiglia è un grande
valore, un patrimonio
importante di risorse, stimoli,
conoscenze.
Le radici ci consentono
di guardare al futuro.
Senza la consapevolezza
della nostra storia,
non si possono immaginare
scenari futuri.
È vero che sa dove va,
solo chi sa da dove viene”
of internationalization through
the opening of exclusive Flexform
flagship stores.
From a Russian dacha to a villa
in Santa Monica, a hotel in the
Arab Emirates to a penthouse
in Shanghai, Flexform seduces
both mature and emerging markets,
and its products are sold
in almost one hundred countries
around the world. The upper distribution
echelon is represented
by over twenty monobrand stores
on five continents, places of full
immersion in the unique style and
taste of the living room according
to Flexform.
MADE IN ITALY
An identity of total Italian value. A
totally Italian success story. A single
country, Italy, where products
are “thought & made.” A single
production plant, in Meda, where
everything is produced with the
most local resources possible.
Everything is Made in Italy,
everything is Made in Meda.
“We have kept faith with our identity
with tenacity and determination,
and we have been able to
make a name even in faraway
lands. The interaction
with different cultural
models has undoubtedly
enriched us, stimulating
our desire to be open to
new things. But our production
philosophy has
not been influenced. People
love us because we
are Made in Italy and because
we offer products
that are an alchemical
distillate of elegance,
comfort and aplomb. That is
what is expected of us. And that
is what we continue to give our
clients, because it is in our DNA,
and therefore comes effortlessly.”
“Flexform is a Made in Italy company
also in the choice of the
craftsmen who work on our production.
Our sofas, our furnishings
require great know-how,
that “knowledge in the hands”
that is required to make a product
of such high manufacturing
quality. The Brianza district in
which we operate is a special territory
for the world of furnishings,
filled with specialized craftsmen
who possess the necessary expertise,
skills passed down from
one generation to the next, making
the products unique and inimitable.”
The safeguarding of Made
in Italy also depends on the
supply chain. Leather, fabrics,
woods, metals, upholstery materials
are selected with the most
severe criteria. Since Flexform is
world famous for its sofas with
soft, large cushions, representing
its stylistic signature, great
care goes into the quality of the
feathers and down they contain.
“Ci amano perché siamo
Made in Italy e offriamo
Pelli, tessuti, legni, metalli e materiali d’imbottitura vengono selezionati
These materials bring precious
lightness, warmth and softness,
and are of guaranteed, certified
origin.
The world wants Italian things.
Italian design stands out for the
lifestyle it suggests, for expertise
and intellectual honesty. While
the excellence of the products
has to do with manufacturing
quality, it is equally true that the
great competitive advantage of
“I nostri divani, i nostri arredi richiedono
manifatturiera”
Italy is beauty. And beauty generates
beauty, as in the evolution
of the Flexform collections.
Beauty lasts in time and never
goes out of style. This is the
Italian style of Flexform. Light,
measured, aimed at a market
not driven by mere necessity,
but by the desire an object is
able to attract.
STYLE ACCORDING
TO FLEXFORM
Flexform offers a large collection
of home furnishings focusing on
the production of sofas, the company’s
core business. Though the
firm is internationally renowned
for its products for the living area,
its range also covers the dining
room and the bedroom zone.
There is one constant: elegance.
The boundaries that establish the
values of a brand and define the
“Flexform
rappresenta un pezzo
di storia nel mondo
dell’arredamento
di design in Italia e
il fascino dei nostri
prodotti senza
tempo sopravviverà
a lungo, incurante
delle ondivaghe
mode del momento”
spirit of its collections are subtle.
The term luxury understood as
redundancy, as useless abundance
and excess, certainly does
not apply to Flexform.
The company’s aesthetic is better
represented by the concept of
sober elegance that translates
into essential forms and soft, never
gaudy materials. The Flexform
world is made of good manners
and good taste, a gentle aesthetic.
A Flexform sofa is like a blue
blazer in the world of clothing:
simple, deconstructed, refined
down to the smallest details.
“Flexform represents a piece of
history in the world of designer
furnishings in Italy, and the appeal
of our timeless products will
survive for a long time, oblivious
to passing fashions.”
The Flexform style blends several
key values that have little to do
with fashion. The coherent design
that avoids the allure of fashions
that win instant applause but
cannot gain lasting consensus.
The discreet and reassuring
elegance of the collections, with
in forme essenziali e materiali morbidi, mai chiassosi.
L’eleganza discreta a rassicurante
Antonio Citterio
their never flaunted beauty, disarming
charm, their sober, clean
lines, where the aesthetic value
of elegance lies in subtraction.
The contemporary character of
design that is never loud and aggressive
– proof of the persuasive
force of silence – but charged with
aesthetic expression due to the
sense of proportion, the precious
materials, the fabrics and finishes
that make every living room configuration
a true atoll of emotional
wellbeing. The timeless design
approach is made of a balanced
mixture of refined lightness that
is never passé. A concentrate of
aesthetic poise and moderation,
an understated, eternally modern
approach. And, above all, tactile
and visual comfort, that warm,
enveloping sensation of protection
felt by anyone who relaxes
on a Flexform sofa, surrounded
by a cozy world of familiar objects
– armchairs, end tables, accessories
– that generate an intimate
cocoon effect. Flexform’s job is to
continue to back up the promise
of a product of extreme quality,
aware of the fact that if habitation
is an aesthetic gesture, the beauty
of a sofa can also contribute to
increase the quality of life.
The expression Effortless Style
precisely sums up the flavor of
the Flexform collections. Measured,
calm, understated spaces
with rare accents of color, illuminated
by a harmonious “Morandi
palette” based on linen, cotton
and cashmere fabrics, in neutral
ivory and sand tones, warm
grays, champagne and burnished
metal hues, leathers in shades of
cowhide, tobacco, honey and
dove gray.
The overall result is a visual and
tactile comfort that seduces and
puts people at ease.
“Every sofa is a constellation of
different functions.”
felice, una vera e propria zona franca. Far sentire chiunque al sicuro, a casa propria,
Antonio Citterio
in un sofisticato nesting-refuge significa aver colto in pieno il senso dell’abitare
contemporaneo.
Resting, reading, watching TV,
working with a computer, making
phone calls, dining. The sofa is
a protagonist, surrounded by an
ecosystem of products in choral
dialogue: chaises longues,
armchairs, end tables, ottomans
generate a serendipitous island,
a truly “duty-free” zone. To make
anyone feel safe, completely
at home, in a sophisticated
nest-refuge means having fully
grasped the meaning of contemporary
living.
A new social phenomenon is
emerging that bears out Flexform’s
emphasis on elegance
rather than luxury. A “lux-immune,”
affluent, refined but never
showy target is coming to the fore
around the world, people who
like to surround themselves with
beautiful things not to impress,
but to live. This is Flexform’s audience.
“Our clients are demanding and
feel the need to find their own
style. Like Flexform, they sense
that the only way to do this is to
demonstrate an innate elegance
that requires just a few very carefully
chosen pieces for their surroundings.”
I tessuti in cashmere
CO 2
clienti ci chiedano
di rifare la fodera al
divano dopo più
di vent’anni
dall’acquisto.
La struttura è ancora
solida.
E la valenza estetica
che non passa mai di
moda, immutata”
recognizable, conceived for everyday
use and always easy to use.”
Antonio Citterio
SUSTAINABILITY
Fabrics, leathers, woods and
metals are selected according
to the highest quality standards,
also with a criterion of sustainable
proximity to the company.
The cashmere fabrics come
from nearby Piedmont, while the
leathers are tanned in the Vicenza
area.
The goosedown utilized – for
the large, soft cushions that are
Flexform’s stylistic trademark
- has Assopiuma Gold Certification,
guaranteeing maximum
quality of raw materials
and manufacturing processes.
Respect for the environment,
processes and the animals
themselves is ensured by this
certification.
The durability of products is
a crucial value of environmental
sustainability. Long-lasting
things lead to less waste and
pollution, not generating material
for disposal, requiring transport
and resulting emissions of
CO 2
. Flexform products, crafted
with the best materials and the
most advanced manufacturing
techniques, are made to last in
time.
“Clients sometimes ask us to
replace the covering of a sofa
more than twenty years after its
purchase. The structure is still
solid. And the image never goes
out of style.”
“What sets every Flexform product
apart is the fact that it is easily
Flexform believes in the development
of projects with an
outlook of Corporate Social
Responsibility. One example
is the partnership with Porsche
Italia in the project Porsche “Ex
Machina” supported by H-Farm,
the leading Italian start-up incubator
aimed at young talents
3.0. Invited to work on the development
of digital projects to
apply to the corporate business,
Flexform has supported this operation
aimed at giving a concrete
opportunity to the younger
generations, fostering trust and
promoting the culture of merit.
IMAGE
AND COMMUNICATION
The way a story is told can make
it an interesting or a boring tale.
The story of Flexform was born
under a lucky star. The company
immediately understood the
importance of image and communication,
and in 1969 they
assigned the design of a logo
to Pino Tovaglia, a visionary
creative spirit, graphic designer
and architect (also creator of the
logos of Pirelli and Alfa Romeo).
Tovaglia proposed the name
Flexform – a contraction of Flexible
Forms – going against the
trend in the furniture industry
of using family surnames. The
first ad campaigns appeared
in magazines. These were the
years when Andy Warhol and
Studio 54 were inspiring creative
talents around the world,
and this was the spirit behind
the images, colors, forms and
positive energy that filled the
Flexform brochures, catalogues
and ad campaigns.
Starting in the 1980s, for many
years the narration of the elegant
Corporate Social Responsability.
di start-up italiano e rivolto a giovani talenti 3.0.
In sintesi, to turn a
world of Flexform, under the art
direction of Natalia Corbetta,
shifted towards the intense ex-
internazionale.
black and white photographs
in the advertising, all made
by outstanding photographers.
Stripped down of everything except
the emotions, the shots of
the great masters of photography
– Aldo Ballo, Gabriele Basilico,
Gianni Berengo Gardin,
Giovanni Gastel, Gian Paolo
Barbieri, Maria Vittoria Backhaus,
Mario Ciampi, Fabrizio
Ferri – traced the contours of a
unique, original narrative dimension.
Today Flexform is shifting the
brand’s narration from the
quality of production to quality
of life. From the product to
the experience of the product.
In short, “to turn a house into a
home” is the sentiment the company
wants to share with its audience.
A totally updated range of channels
that work in unison - print
campaign, video, social networks,
website, catalogues, trade
fairs - contributes to convey the
correct perception of the brand,
to reach an ever wider, varied and
international audience.
The slogan Home at Last that
guides all the communication
today is a message that sums
up the value of homecoming,
as the arrival point of our day,
but also the home seen as the
dream of a lifetime.
“The design of a private home is
the design of the client’s dream of
a lifetime.”
Antonio Citterio
With the introduction of color
in the photographs and of the
Home at Last concept, the
company creates worlds of
meaning with which anyone
can identify in terms of affinities
and the sharing of places,
situations, sensations, through
storytelling that establishes
a relationship with the public.
The construction of high aesthetic
impact of images is thus
joined by the value of its meaning.
The focus is on clients and
their life experiences.
“We are working in continuity
with the past, keeping the quality
level of our communication
very high. We continue to work
with photographers known for
their images of great intensity in
our advertising campaigns, creative
talents used to thinking glocally,
directors capable of bringing
emotions to our audience,
transmitting our brand values
in videos. Our brand belongs to
the sphere of desirability, and the
ability to tell stories is undoubtedly
the proving ground of the future
of communication.”
Antonio Citterio
Paolo Nava, Rodolfo Bonetto, William Lansing Plumb, Gigi Radice, Guido Rosati,
Carlo Colombo, Giulio Manzoni.
collezioni.
Antonio Citterio
DESIGNERS
With a forceful synergic relationship
between design and
production, Flexform has a long
history of fertile interaction with
more than one generation of
great designers.
Since the 1960s the company
has worked with outstanding talents:
Asnago-Vender, Sergio
Asti, Cini Boeri, Joe Colombo,
Paolo Nava, Rodolfo Bonetto,
William Lansing Plumb, Gigi
Radice, Guido Rosati, Carlo
Colombo, Giulio Manzoni.
Of all the names, however, for
forty years Antonio Citterio has
been the designer who has contributed
most to write the history
of the firm and to translate its
values into objects, coordinating
all the collections. An architect,
director, deus ex machina, Citterio
is the designer who has given
a soul to the product. With a
design approach that starts with
study of the space that surrounds
objects, and of the architecture
in which that space is inserted,
Antonio Citterio has an overall
project vision ranging from the
large to the small scale. As a
designer he reasons in terms of
product families, not individual
items. Today he is a precious
counterpart, in dialogue with the
ongoing enlightened initiative of
the company, fostering a path of
sharing and exchange.
“Talking about my relationship
with Flexform means talking
about a group of friends who
have shared visions and experiences.
It also means talking
about a big part of my life, given
the fact that we have been getting
together for over forty years.”
