Forme d’Arte
Forme d’Arte
in realtà.
Forme d’Arte
From an early age I was used to appreciating art.
My father’s house has always been a place who
painters and sculptors attended; it is natural to be
passionate about something when you breathe it
continuously.
Growing up, the work led me to take care of good
food and above all cheese, a product rich in history.
The ancient art of making cheese, therefore, for
me could only marry with the art form for excellence:
the painting.
From this idea and from friendship gained over
the years with a group of artists among the most
important of contemporary painting, all related
to Tuscany, by birth or by “adoption”, my dream
came true: Forme d’Arte, a small production of
particular cheeses, unique for taste and image.
After almost 20 years of tastings and presentations
of my cheeses in the vernissages of the
painting exhibitions of the artist friends, I decided
to do something that would pay homage to all
that they allowed me to do in these years, that
would talk about them and their work artistic.
I met Fabio Calvetti, a longtime and trusted friend,
and the project was born: “flock of art’s work” to
be carried around the world.
At this point we needed only one important curator
who was sensitive to the this theme and was
professionally prepared to take the idea forward
and transform it into reality.
When I asked Filippo Lotti to be the “shepherd” of
my flock, his enthusiasm was explosive and overwhelmed
me. He chose and contacted other artists
in addition to those already at home in Forme
d’Arte, he explained the project and enriched it
even more by involving photographers who have
interpreted the artworks and then painters adhering
to this idea.
Now... the “flock” is ready !!!
And before starting this transhumance I can only
give thanks to all the artists and a special thanks
to Filippo for the commitment and professionalism
that he put in this original initiative.
sapori presso piccoli produttori riuscendo a farci
nel caso specifico, all’arte.
Siamo tutti
meglio, siamo i protagonisti.
Gli artisti, attraverso un supporto pittorico del
tutto particolare, si raccontano, inventano, narrano
storie, costruiscono la loro versione della realtà
che ci circonda attraverso immagini, colori,
toni.
With Forme d’Arte Paolo Piacenti wanted to emphasize,
in a game of double meanings, a possible
link between his cheeses and painting,
re-proposing the ancient relationship between
figurative art and food.
In the context of an adequate exploitation of
high quality products, Paolo also plays a role: research
with love and patience, traditional flavors
with small producers succeeding in making us
feel “excite” in front of his cheeses.
But for Paolo it is not enough to identify and refine
these products; he wanted to highlight these
excellences by linking food, cheese in the specific
case, to art.
This is how the idea of “dressing” the forms of
pecorino with artist labels was born, designing,
years ago, the Forme d’Arte project, to which
important artists have joined and, consequently,
the pecorino’s range has been enhanced by wonderful
labels that now distinguish this product.
Ten artists are part of this project.
This was not enough anymore for Paolo, he
wanted to go over and wanted something more,
and two years ago he presented me this project
to which I immediately enthusiastically joined, so
that art, taste, research and creativity merge into
a only great reality.
From here the idea of making available to some
“historical” artists of Forme d’Arte, with other
masters, invited by me, sheep-shaped bifacial
wooden silhouette — in real size — on which to
express their creativity and their own inspiration.
All seasoned with a pinch of madness — pass me
the term — and extravagance, a key ingredient to
excite. And I want to do this...
But the fascinating, wonderful, enigmatic thing is
that this madness is widely shared by all the artists
who have shared this project.
We all need to tell; we need to somehow express
our innermost feelings to live. We are all artists
of the novel of our life, of which we are the protagonists
through the tools with which we can
manage better.
The artists, through a very specific pictorial support,
tell about themselves, invent, tell stories,
build their version of the reality that surrounds
us through images, colors, tones.
Each one with his own style, transmits us feelings
that he has lived, emotions that he is experiencing
and that he would like to live and, through
imagination, reconstructs and gives a semblance
of meaning to the chaos of existence.
12 13
spostarsi e soffermarsi poco tempo in ogni luogo
terreno all’altro.
pecora dipinta, ho invitato altrettanti fotografi,
fotografico di ciascun artista affiancato all’opera
sentito grazie.
And it is in this “chaos” of different styles, that 24
artists, all Tuscan by birth, inspiration or choice
as country in which one has chosen to live, have
expressed themselves to be able to find, each
according to their own pictorial style, the most
personal and sincere interpretation; a deliberately
orchestrated harmony or that spontaneous
image born from the artist’s mind, an inexhaustible
vein that manages to rise from the risks of
repetitiveness, by virtue of a language full of solicitations,
quotes and references, involving with
the passion that remains unchanged in time but
that, on the contrary, every time it is enriched by
emotional vibes.
This original artistic project is called “Sheep Art
- Arte in transumanza (Art in transhumance)”
which relates the two complementary spheres
of man and animal: wandering, the rambling being
of the world that does not include the idea
of a linear journey and functional but refers to
the concept of wandering, to a formative and uncertain
path in which man facing obstacles goes
to meet the unveiling of reality and its own errors.
And, in this sense, the exhibition can only
be itinerant and therefore move and dwell little
time in every place identified for the exhibition,
so as to convey the idea that accompanies the
whole project, the wandering of this flock, the
transhumance. In Latin “transumare”, word that
brings together the prefix “trans” (through) and
the noun “humus” (soil), means to pass from one
terrain to another.
Grazing, instead, identifies the precise place in
which the animal finds sustenance. Man and animal
interact in life as in art from time immemorial,
but with profound differences according to
the different epochs.
Together with the 24 artists who made the painted
sheep, I invited many photographers, also all
of them tuscan, to create a photographic portrait
of each artist flanked by the work or in any case
contextualized with the project, so as to enrich
a collective exhibition that I do not hesitate to
define the most original among the many that I
have taken care of.
To them, painters and photographers, my applause
and the most heartfelt thanks.
An equally big thank you to Paolo Piacenti for
giving me the chance to realize his dream, that I
not only pulled out of the drawer where he kept
it, but I think I have “dressed up” and worked out
in the best way beyond any false modesty.
una stella danzante”, diceva Friedrich Nietzsche;
questo caos, che ha permesso di plasmare
pensieri in immagini uniche e originali, è la nostra
nuova estrosa stella danzante, quella stella luminosa
pastore.
“You have to have chaos inside yourself to generate
a dancing star”, said Friedrich Nietzsche;
this chaos, which has allowed us to achieve
thoughts in unique and original images, is our
new whimsical dancing star, that bright star that
has allowed an amazing result, succeeding to
give, in the true sense of the word, “shape” to an
apparently extravagant project, certainly complex
in its organization, and of which I feel the
proud and enthusiastic shepherd.
nell’immaginario collettivo atteggiamenti e modi
scorrono visioni oniriche, miti classici, scorci
metropolitani e figure femminili.
sono opere dipinte come un quadro, ma non si appendono;
fa sembrare creature “vive” sorrette dalle proprie
gambe.
altre ampie e avvolgenti.
ancora intatta.
Riding with the imagination
on the back of a sheep
It is a symbol of meekness and innocence, but also
of a awry conformism and foolishness.
Few other animals like sheep represent in the collective
imagination attitudes and ways of being so
different. It is not by chance that we often find it in
fables and proverbs as a symbol of the contradictory
nature of the human being.
Even as an artistic subject, the sheep retains an
emblematic value, embodying meanings that
range over from the sacred to the profane.
The works published in this catalog, on the other
hand, offer an interpretation that is new and unusual
in many respects, starting with the choice of
making artists paint the wooden silhouette of a
sheep.
The back of the animal becomes like a screen on
which dreamlike visions, classical myths, metropolitan
views and female figures scrolling up. In
this case the support already expresses a content,
we could also say a “primary subject”, to which the
various representations do not simply overlap but
merge into an autonomous and complete meaning.
This happens both when the image exactly
emphasize the profile of the animal and when it
borders beyond the given limit. Moreover, the bilaterality
of the support allows us to identify two
different phases of the representation: a before
and after, a front and a back, a day and night vision,
a panoramic view and a detail. To this is added
a problem of definition: they are works painted
like a painting, but do not hang; their “body”
occupies the space, but they are not sculptures;
they are designed to be set up in the environment,
but can not be called installations. In fact, talking
about “Sheep Art” is the best way to frame the
complexity of a choral work and at the same time
guided by a unitary design. The fact that they are
works intended to be placed on the ground, with
the aid of a pedestal, makes them look like “living”
creatures held up by their legs.
It is the impression that comes from the interpretation
of Massimo Barlettani, where the floral motif
painted on both sides recalls the white fleece of
the sheep. The petals cover the body of the animal
as if they were wool tufts, some small and pointed,
others wide and enveloping. The fluffy drafting of
the color evokes something soft to the touch, a
soft cloak to caress. It is the representation of an
inviolate candor, of a still intact innocence.
Day and night are the background, in the work
of Antonio Biancalani, to a contest between arrogance
and docility. The daytime vision is domi-
18 19
protagonista.
voluttuosa. Le sue forme generose invitano ai piaceri
dell’amore, all’estasi della carne. Abbandonarsi
questi spazi asfittici dove i palazzi crescono l’uno
sull’altro rubando posto alla natura. La vita scorre
imperterrita lungo le strade, nelle periferie e nelnated
by the figure of a aries which, with a threatening
manner, induces a sheep to retreat: a game
of roles, we could say, where the strongest prevails
the weakest. At night, however, the scenario
changes and the situation is reversed: while the
aries sleeps, the sheep takes over, calling the
darkness to become an accomplice and witness
of their revenge.
With Alain Bonnefoit, female beauty becomes
the protagonist. A woman lying softly on a flowery
meadow offers a sensual and voluptuous look.
Her generous forms invite the pleasures of love,
the ecstasy of the flesh. To abandon oneself to
desire is like dreaming, letting instinct prevail over
reason: this seems to tell us the scene painted on
the back of the work, where the beautiful nymph
lies asleep. Her body, first welcoming, is now an
impregnable fortress. As she savored the secret
delights of the dream, new promises of love open
up to her soul.
The work of Vincenzo Calli explores the dimension
of myth representing a locus amoenus of virgilian
memory: valleys, hills, streams extend as far as the
eye can see in this pastoral eden where existence
flows far from troubles and sufferings. A female
figure extends her arms and raises a hand as if to
say: «Come! Enter you too in this paradise». Only
art allows us to ideally cross that threshold, beyond
which lives the beautiful fable of a fair world
and a happy humanity.
Even Fabio Calvetti is conditioned from the charm
of the myth, but choosing to adapt it to the aesthetic
standards of modernity. In fact, the one he
portrays is a Venus of our times, with red coral
lips and black eyelashes like crow’s wings. The low
and elusive look makes her seem absorbed in who
knows what thoughts: a distant love, a nameless
nostalgia. Perhaps, instead, she is dreaming, and
in her dream, her face turns into a landscape: her
lips become dunes, her eyes are very deep lakes.
She is the mother earth, the protectress of flocks
and crops; she is the unreachable woman, carnal
yet ungraspable as a mirage.
The work of Claudio Cionini takes us back to the
present, in the gray and anonymous light of an
ordinary metropolis. A dramatic presentiment
weighs on these asphyxiated spaces, where palaces
grow on each other, stealing from nature.
Life flows unperturbed along the streets, in the
suburbs and in the houses, and meanwhile the
murky smoke of indifference erases all hope in the
future of man.
grandi occhi e labbra purpuree. I loro profili si stagliano
sullo sfondo disegnando linee curve, verticali
ed oblique come fossero traiettorie di gabbiani
in volo.
destino.
Con Franco Mauro Franchi l’ambientazione si
sdoppia, mostrando una scena di vita campestre
e un paesaggio marino. Nel primo caso, il ritmo
della danza imprime movimento alle figure che
ballano con passi agili e leggeri. Anime felici in
Ars gratia artis ci ricorda Danilo Fusi, vale a dire
la ragione dell’arte risiede nell’arte stessa. Quella
che potrebbe sembrare una dichiarazione d’intenti
vuole essere, invece, un omaggio alla bellezza
femminile narrata dal cinema di Hollywood. Dalle
Raising your eyes to look at the sky can be the
solution: it’s what the lovers of Elio De Luca do
while they look at the great enigma of the stars.
They rise in flight with the thought, yet their bodies
have solid roots. They embody a remote era of
human history, when the moon was a goddess to
invoke and nature a temple to cherish. Two young
women linger in front of the mirror; they have long
tawny hair, big eyes and purple lips. Their profiles
stand out against the background by drawing
curved, vertical and oblique lines as if they were
trajectories of flying seagulls.
It is an epic scene depicted by Raffaele De Rosa:
we perceive it by the imperious look of the knight
and the impetuous impetuosity of his horse. We
are in the heart of a battle that takes place at the
gates of the city to be conquered. The severe
sound of swords invades the night air with a terrible
foreboding of death. The natural landscape
becomes the theater of fable and legend, the
place dedicated to preserving the memory of stories
that mix love, virtue and drama.
For the Japanese artist Satoshi Dobara, Florence
seen during the day is a daydream. Brunelleschi’s
dome stands high in the sky, even reaching the
clouds. It is a typical Florentine morning, when the
clear air allows you to embrace cities and hills with
your eyes. And just like in a dream, night falls suddenly
on this show. It is then that in the sky there
are distant lights, galaxies, constellations: custodians
of unfathomable mysteries and perhaps even
of our destiny.
With Franco Mauro Franchi the setting doubles,
showing a scene of rural life and a seascape. In the
first case, the rhythm of the dance gives movement
to the figures that dance with agile and light
steps. Happy souls in blissful places that the worries
of daily life do not reach. On the other side, the
demoiselles in the bathroom entertain in pleasant
feminine chatter, while the silhouette, which has
become a rock, welcomes and contains their opulent
bodies.
Ars gratia artis reminds us of Danilo Fusi, that is to
say, the reason for art lies in art itself. What might
seem to be a declaration of intent, on the other
hand, is a tribute to the feminine beauty narrated
by Hollywood cinema. From the stars of the silent
film to the disruptive sensuality of Marilyn: icons
of grace and founded myths of the modern imaginary
that art has rendered eternal.
Also under the quote is Giuliano Giuggioli, who
recovers Magritte’s reflection on the artifices of
20 21
dell’animale.
da lui declinato come espressione dell’intervento
distruttivo dell’essere umano sull’ambiente. Ampie
capannoni — denunciano l’agghiacciante squallore
delle periferie industriali, il vuoto straniante e
metafisico di spazi degradati. Un’anima metallica,
asettica e impersonale abita questi luoghi, dove
molto diversi: uno sereno e pieno d’incanto, cornice
to invite us to be wary of appearances. The work,
in fact, represents a sheep whose existence is
“real” only in pictorial fiction, as indicated by the
label hanging from the animal’s neck.
Even the image painted on the back underlies a
“deception”: it is not a flock that suspended in
the air, but a bench of clouds “sheep’s forms” rain
messenger. Perhaps it is not even a landscape, but
a subtle game that weaves form and thought to
unmask the illusion of painting.
In the work of Susan Leyland a theory of horses
in motion suggests the polarity of opposing
forces: dynamism/static, vitality/inertia, instinct/
rationality. Agile and powerful in the variety of
postures, these horses rebel against every form of
constraint, so symbolizing the indomitable forces
of nature. The iteration of the same subject generates
a continuous and multidirectional pattern
that invades the surface with a horror vacui effect.
The result is a different perception of the particular
and of the whole, recognizing the first a semantic
function and the second a compositional
value.
With Riccardo Luchini we find the urban theme,
which he declined as an expression of the destructive
intervention of the human being on the
environment. Large areas of color and few elements
distributed with an almost abstract principle
— pylons, electric wires, sheds — denounce
the chilling squalor of the industrial suburbs, the
estranging and metaphysical emptiness of degraded
spaces. A metallic, aseptic and impersonal
soul lives in these places, where the air, full of vapors,
has now become unbreathable.
For Mario Madiai no one better than Pinocchio
knows the merits and faults of the animals, having
himself been a donkey. What’s more, his story is
characterized with characters with legs, tails and
beaks. Among these are the shorn and cold sheep
that the puppet meets in the Country of “Acchiappacitrulli”,
where the unfortunate ones pay for
the punishment in place of their executioners. The
artist seems to refer to this episode, painting two
very different nocturnes: a serene and full of enchantment,
the ideal setting for gullible people,
the other ashy and dark, as befits a country where
injustice has become law .
In the work of Giovanni Maranghi the subject unravels
itself like a thread on the chromatic grid of
the background, thus combining the dynamism
of the sign with the color hieraticity. The artist’s
In
diurna, astrattamente collocata in pieno sole;
coltivati.
interest in drawing synthesis is reflected in two
compositions of flowers, fruits and objects where
the contour line captures the graphic essence of
the forms. In one case, the subject stands out on
bright chromatic marquetry that refer to a diurnal
setting, abstractly placed in full sun; on the other
side, instead, the figurative writing forms an arabesque
that flows on the compact black of the
background, evoking a more intimate and introspective
atmosphere.
The situation imagined by Francesco Nesi is quite
different: we are at the gates of an ancient Tuscan
village surrounded by hills streaked with cultivated
fields. A sheet music unrolls foregrounded, while
a violinist, suspended in mid-air, intones a song
for his beloved. A minutely described landscape,
not at all detached from the concreteness of the
world, yet mobile, light and impalpable like an apparition.
On the verso of the opera, other figures
rise in flight like musician angels in a Renaissance
painting; in place of the landscape, a white background
makes their weightless bodies seem even
more agile. It is a movement of the gaze beyond
the contingent forms, in a dematerializing space
where color leaves room for the “sacred” ritual of
drawing.
Beauty can be hidden everywhere, the important
thing is to know how to recognize it: this is the
conceptual assumption of Paolo Nuti’s work. In
his case, talking about beauty means, above all,
learning to observe reality with new eyes. Overcoming
the net of barbed wire with the gaze — a
dramatic symbol of imprisonment — that stands
between our visual habits and the authentic essence
of things. Beauty is the gash in the net, the
flower grown among the thorns, the robin lying on
the wire before taking flight. Details that the many
distractions of everyday life often prevent us from
seize. The task of art is to return these remnants
of wonder, bringing them back to the center of a
question that is both aesthetic and existential.
Nico Paladini is inspired by the advertising language
to transform the sheep into the protagonist
of a spot commercial. The peaceful animal, in
fact, is a means to recount the distance between
past and present of the means of communication:
from the postage stamp, image of a world destined
to disappear, to today’s recharge cards of
telephone, an unmissable presence in the always
“connected” life of the contemporary man. In this
transition from the old to the new something has
gone irremediably lost. Not only a large part of
22 23
co percorre per intero la superficie, estendendosi
anche alle ceramiche — medaglioni e piccole figure
— applicate in rilievo su entrambi i lati dell’opera.
Pur procedendo in direzioni diverse, spesso
suddividendosi in piccoli o in grandi gruppi, animali
Critico d’arte
nato a sparire, all’odierna ricarica telefonica, presenza
immancabile nella vita sempre “connessa”
dell’uomo contemporaneo.
occhi feroci e bocche fameliche.
dove “biondi agnelli” pascolano sulle colline fiorite
uomo e natura sembra ormai impossibile. Bisogna
habits, but also the value of what is authentic,
genuine, necessary. Thus, once the animal’s fleece
has disappeared, the sheep also becomes a product
with captivating colors, a commodity to offer,
like others, to the bulimia of consumers.
With Elisabetta Rogai the condition of naturalness
is restored. Flowers, fruits and garland cover
the body of the sheep as in ancient ritual. It is a
return to the origins of peasant culture, when animals
and nature were considered a sacred good
and not a resource to sacrifice.
Carlo Romiti paints a scene full of pàthos: a pack
of wolves surrounds a sheep, showing fierce eyes
and ravenous mouths. Such is the impetus of violence
to vibrate the air all around, while the landscape
is colored with dramatic colors. Meanwhile,
the poor helpless woman, suffers the terrible
threat, guilty, however, of having offered her tormentors
the opportunity to become executioners.
In the eternal race between predator and prey,
animals and men face the same destiny: there is
no escape for those who, unable to defend themselves,
are oppressed by the oppressor, neither for
those who, without courage, agree to be prevaricated.
Lastly, nature is a complex language that
man must learn to interpret.
Marcello Scarselli reminds us of this, who weaves
word and image to describe two specular but
different landscapes. The sentence transcribed
on the support evokes the atmosphere of a rural
scene, where “blond lambs” graze on the flowery
hills under the watchful eye of a young shepherd.
A luminous and serene dimension in which human
beings live together peacefully with other
living creatures. On the contrary, the painted image
suggests a situation of conflict between two
pairs of figures — the one anthropomorphic, the
other depicting birds — distant from each other
and not communicating. Even the landscape has
changed: a few stripes of color draw a desolate
space where the dialogue between man and nature
seems impossible. We must go back to the
dawn of the world to find a trace of this lost harmony.
This is what Paolo Staccioli does by drawing a
dense plot of animal and anthropomorphic figures
freely inspired by the graffiti of primitive man on
the walls of the caves. A continuous and dynamic
frieze covers the entire surface, extending also to
ceramics - medallions and small figures - applied
in relief on both sides of the work. While proceeding
in different directions, often subdividing themselves
into small or large groups, animals and
people compose an imposing choral scene,
as if in front of our eyes they were parading
together the long eras of human history.
An image in some aspects similar to that
painted by Armando Xhomo, even if in his
case is a large human flock. An indistinct
mass of people moves towards the observer
as if they were hypnotized, devoid of his own
will. They proceed with their heads down,
with the acquiescent and renouncing attitude
of the flock that let themself be guided
by the shepherd. No one can be said to be
a stranger to this stream of faces without
names or tamed identities. We have all been
part of it, at least once in a lifetime. As children
we are taught to be afraid of the wolf,
to know how to recognize and defend ourselves.
Once we become adults, we understand
how much worse it is to live in a world
that requires sheep.
Antonio Biancalani

Antonio Biancalani
Antonio Biancalani è nato a Montelupo Fiorentino
(Fi) nel 1948.
Ha avvertito fin da giovanissimo una spiccata
vocazione pittorica.
dall’artista. La figura umana è centrale, isolata,
oppure data per indizi. Figure che diventano
sembianze esistenziali in uno spazio pittorico tormentato,
come forme impresse su vecchie lastre
Numerosi i consensi e i riconoscimenti ottenuti,
con mostre in tutta Italia e all’estero (Francia, Caraibi,
Stati Uniti, Germania, Irlanda, Belgio).
Carlesi, Marco Cola, Enio Concarotti, Enrico Crispolti,
Enzo Fabiani, Giovanni Faccenda, Mauro
Falzoni, Guerrino Giorgetti, Linda Giusti, Valerio
Grimaldi, Paolo Levi, Giovanni Lombardi, Nicola
Micieli, Domenico Montalto, Elvio Natali, Nicola
Nuti, Dino Pasquali, Alessandra Scappini.
Biancalani vive e lavora a Lamporecchio (Pt).
Antonio Biancalani was born in Montelupo Fiorentino
(Fi) in 1948.
He felt a marked pictorial vocation from an early
age. The exercise of painting and the participation
in national prizes and exhibitions made it
clear soon the need to deepen the experience and
the technical and visual knowledge of the figurative
arts. Therefore, he dedicated himself to the
study of the human figure, which will remain one
of the favorite themes to date. From ‘75 and for a
few years, he attended the School of Nude at the
Academy of Florence. Subsequently, he dedicates
himself to engraving, a technique that he will cultivate
with a certain continuity over the years, in
parallel with painting.
In Biancalani’s painting, drawing is the protagonist,
because stories unfold in its folds, as between
rolls of rolled up mattresses and the sheets
left on the bed, often portrayed by the artist. The
human figure is central, isolated, or given by clues.
Figures that become existential appearances in a
tormented pictorial space, like shapes imprinted
on old photographic slabs, now on the verge of
disappearing, or solitary presences of flesh in their
physicality.
The first solo show at the Il Toro di Empoli (Fi) gallery
in 1973.
Soon the terms of his figurative language in the
direction of critical and existential realism will be
clarified.
There are also numerous participations in exhibitions
and the exhibition activity is getting intensifying,
coinciding with the full resumption of work,
at the end of the eighties, after a period of study
and reflection on language that will result in a new
figurative vision, based on the poetic revisitation
of everyday reality, through the emblematic objects
above all of the peasant culture.
Numerous consents and awards have been obtained,
with exhibitions throughout Italy and
abroad (France, the Caribbean, the United States,
Germany, Ireland, Belgium).
Among his work, Dino Carlesi, Marco Cola, Enio
Concarotti, Enrico Crispolti, Enzo Fabiani, Giovanni
Faccenda, Mauro Falzoni, Guerrino Giorgetti,
Linda Giusti, Valerio Grimaldi, Paolo Levi, Giovanni
Lombardi, Nicola Micieli, Domenico Montalto,
Elvio Natali, Nicola Nuti, Dino Pasquali, Alessandra
Scappini.
Alain Bonnefoit
Alain Bonnefoit
dello scultore italo-francese Antoniucci Volti,
a Parigi.
in Oriente.
a sciupare.
esposizioni in Italia e in Francia.
Born in 1937 in Paris, in the Montmartre district.
From 1953 he attended the École des Arts Appliqués
and from 1956 the École des Beaux Arts in
Paris; then, from 1959, also the École des Beaux
Arts of Brussels (section “Engraving and sculpture”).
From 1961 he attended the School of Applied
Arts in Paris and practiced the study of the
Italo-French sculptor Antoniucci Volti, who will
become his master of art; with him he will share
the approach to the female body and establish a
close working relationship and a true friendship.
In 1965 he moved to Campiglia Marittima (Li) in
Tuscany, while maintaining his own studio in Paris,
becoming in fact a Tuscan by adoption.
Alain Bonnefoit has cleverly changed the fluctuating
sign of Matisse, the plastic body of Arp and the
dancing casualness of Dufy; all diluted in the Tuscan
lights and shades. The artist, in fact, deepens
the representation of the nude just before moving
to Italy. Right here, he starts experimenting with
the various techniques, from mixed media to oil,
watercolor, lithographs, china and sculpture, with
the sole purpose of giving life to endless variations
in portraying the female body in a climate of
calm eroticism.
In 1969 he held the first major personal exhibition
in Paris.
The first trip to Japan is from 1973: an experience
that marks it deeply. There he discovers and studies
the technique of the sumi-e (to make a figure
with a single gesture, without ever detaching the
brush from the sheet), which he deepens, often
returning to the Orient. His encounters with great
Japanese artists and works imbued with Zen
thought, have matured man and his work.
Bonnefoit, especially after having learned the
sumi-e technique, in the early seventies, painted,
“writes” a life made of looks and bodies, holding
those fragile creatures hanging on them, which is
not enough to spoil.
Since the end of the 1980s, important exhibitions
have been reported in Italy and in France.
From the beginning of the Nineties the true artistic
explosion: many personal exhibitions, as well
as the success of critics and public.
To date he has held over 200 solo exhibitions
around the world.
Currently he continues to live and work between
France and Italy (Certaldo, in the province of Florence,
a city of which he is also an honorary citizen),
which he now considers a second homeland.
Fabio Calvetti
percorso formativo, certi amori, certe allampanate
Germania, Belgio, Spagna, Corea, Lussemburgo,
Lituania, Olanda, Svezia, Bulgaria, Svizzera, Oceania
e gli Stati Uniti, concentrandosi soprattutto
in Francia e in Giappone.
“World artist tour” insieme ad artisti come George
Segal, Tom Wesselmann e Alex Katz.
Negli anni successivi espone “The world in one
a Staggia Senese (Si).
Poi le personali: “La via dell’Arte”, Villa Schiff, Montignoso
(Ms); “Scraps of life/Pezzi di vita”, Palazzo
dei Priori, Volterra (Pi); “Litle tales/Piccole storie”,
ex chiesa di Santa Maria della Misericordia, Perugia;
“Enigmi e Segreti”, Palazzo Consiliare, Tavarnelle
Calvetti vive e lavora a Certaldo.
Fabio Calvetti was born in Certaldo (Fi) in 1956.
He graduated from the Liceo Artistico (1978) and
later at the “Accademia delle Belle Arti” in Florence
in the School of Painting section.
The formation of Calvetti took place under the
sign of the experimentation of the seventies, between
an unconventional figuration, pop thrusts
and visual poetry. A gradual maturation of the
sign has led the author to make the composition
more essential and efficient: environments in
which some traces of his formative journey seem
to be accessible, certain loves, certain solitudes
like Hopper’s style.
His exhibition was divided between Italy, Germany,
Belgium, Spain, Korea, Luxembourg, Lithuania,
Holland, Sweden, Bulgaria, Switzerland, Oceania
and the United States, concentrating mainly in
France and Japan. In Japan, Shiraishi Gallery in
Tokyo included it in the “World artist tour” project
together with artists such as George Segal, Tom
Wesselmann and Alex Katz.
More recently, starting from 2008, an exhibition
at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art
of Arezzo; then he exhibited at Palazzo Venezia
(Rome), at the Marciana Library of Venice and at
the Cloister of Sant’Agostino in Pietrasanta (Lu).
In the following years he exhibited “The world
in one room/Il mondo in una stanza” at Palazzo
Pretorio in Certaldo and in the Sala delle Colonne
in Pontassieve (Fi), in Catania with “Una notte di
primavera” at the Impressionart Gallery in Cetona
(Si) with “Possibile verità”, then guest of honor at
the 46th Salon des Arts in Cholet (France) and
the performance “Lyrique pour mon fauteuil” at
the Rocca di Staggia in Staggia Senese (Si).
Then the personal exhibition: “La via dell’Arte”, Villa
Schiff, Montignoso (Ms); “Scraps of life/Pezzi di
vita”, Palazzo dei Priori, Volterra (Pi); “Little tales/
Piccole storie”, deconsecrated church of Santa
(Pd), in France, “Tranches de vie” at the
Musee Utrillo-Valadon di Sannois, at the Galerie
Vieceli Art Contemporain in Cannes and “Consolazione”
altoforni e tubazioni. Si avvicina lentamente ad
una pittura prevalentemente monocroma.
Nel 2007, dopo aver visitato Parigi, nascono i primi
studi di paesaggio urbano. Affascinato dai suoi
dopo.
“Istanti – Under the Skin of Images”.
2016, prima a Pietrasanta, poi a Palermo.
Cionini vive e lavora a Piombino.
Claudio Cionini was born in Grosseto in 1978.
He attended the Art School of Grosseto and the
“Accademia delle Belle Arti” in Florence; city,
where exhibition activity begins in 2000.
The teachings of Prof. Daniele Govi and Adriano
Bimbi are significant for his formation.
After his studies his attention immediately turned
to the industrial landscape, reality that surrounds
him in the city of Piombino (Li).
The steelworks plants attract him: the strong chiaroscuro
and the smoky atmospheres that surround
blast furnaces and pipes. He slowly approaches a
predominantly monochromatic painting.
In 2007, after visiting Paris, the first urban landscape
studies were born. Fascinated by his large
boulevards and the boundless views of the city, he
senses the fundamental characteristic of his work:
the space, the depth of perspective, the vanishing
point.
In 2008 the personal “Luoghi dell’assenza” at the
Archaeological Museum of Fiesole (Fi).
In 2009, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary
of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the solo exhibition
“L’ombra del Muro”, in the rooms of Palazzo
Panciatichi in Florence. He also exhibited at the
collective “Il Muro - Vent’anni dopo. Quasi come
Dumas (Twenty years later. Almost like Dumas)“
at the Castle of Lari (Pi) curated by Filippo Lotti
and “I Muri dopo Berlino” at the Spazio Tadini in
Milan.
Cionini’s painting becomes more material, inserts
new shades and new frames. Thus, in 2010, the
personal exhibition “Scorci di verità” was born at
the Galleria d’Arte Contemporanea in Arezzo.
In 2011 he is at the Piaggio Museum in Pontedera
(Pi) with “Rust! Fabbrica-Città-Memoria (Factory-
City-Memory)”.
In 2013, the exhibition at the Angelica Gallery in
Rome “Istanti - Under the Skin of Images”.
In 2014 he exhibited at the Galleria Lupo ‘Art in
Palermo and at Fornace Pasquinucci in Capraia
Fiorentina (Fi) with “Blues of the big city”.
In 2015 he exhibited in Pietrasanta (Lu), in the
rooms of Palazzo Panichi with “Beyond the
deserts: the visible cities”.
The Galleria Lupo ‘Art dedicates two personal exhibitions
to him in 2016, first in Pietrasanta, then
dell’immagine, affiancato, all’inizio, dall’esperienza
di maestri come Vitaliano De Angelis e Oscar
Gallo, scultori fondamentali nella sua formazione
tecnica e linguistica.
a Cecina (Li).
poi in numerosi altri spazi pubblici e privati in
Italia e all’estero (Svizzera, Giappone e Stati Uniti).
Partecipa ad importanti rassegne, come la Quadriennale
di Roma, e allestisce personali in luoghi
istituzionali e gallerie private, in Italia e all’estero,
l’universo.
Franchi vive e lavora a Rosignano Solvay (Li).
Franco Mauro Franchi was born in Castiglioncello
(Li) in 1951.
Sculptor, painter, draftsman trained at the Istituto
Statale d’Arte of Lucca and then at the “Accademia
delle Belle Arti” in Florence.
Constant interest in the plastic development of
the image, flanked, at the beginning, by the experience
of masters such as Vitaliano De Angelis and
Oscar Gallo, fundamental sculptors in his technical
and linguistic training.
Franchi has built his shapes on a full-bodied and
well-structured sign, softly painted in the painting
and sinuously wrapped around the material in
sculpture.
He began his intense exhibition in the late sixties,
not yet twenty, exposing in the gallery of the artist
and friend Sirio Bandini in Cecina (Li).
In 1976 he took up his teaching career at the
Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, which led him,
in 1989, to win the Chair of Sculpture and to carry
out his teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts
in Foggia, then to Bologna and finally in Carrara
(2000), where he taught until 2018.
From 1978 he began to perform monumental
works, first in Cecina (the Fountain in Piazza della
Libertà), then in numerous other public and private
spaces in Italy and abroad (Switzerland, Japan
and the United States).
He took part in important exhibitions, such as the
Rome Quadriennale, and set up personal exhibitions
in institutional settings and private galleries,
in Italy and abroad, including, in 1991, the solo exhibition
at the Gianadda Foundation in Martigny
(Switzerland).
In 2011 he was invited to the 54th Venice Biennale
in the Sala Nervi of the Italian Pavilion at the Palazzo
delle Esposizioni in Turin.
In 2013 Franchi, received the title of Academic of
the prestigious Academy of Design Arts in Florence.
He works with equal participation in stone and
bronze, expressing a sense of the broad and solar
form, which aspires to represent, in the predominant
image of the woman, the vital force that pervades
the universe.
Danilo Fusi

Danilo Fusi
figurazione.
La sua attività professionale inizia nel 1974. Una
pittura elegante e pensata. La pagina di Fusi innesta,
sulla percezione dell’anacronismo, lo straniamento
del quotidiano, attraverso l’introduzione
dell’elemento incongruo, “anticlassico” e “antigrazioso”.
I critici Pier Paolo Castellucci, Tommaso
Paloscia e Dino Pasquali tennero a battesimo, fin
dai primi anni Settanta, l’attività dell’artista fiorentino,
Bologna, Modena, Parma, Padova, Verona, Napoli
Fiorino, in Palazzo Strozzi a Firenze.
e collettive a Damasco (Siria), Mantova, Palermo,
Barcellona, Madrid, Torino, Lucca. Nel 1979 aderisce,
con Del Testa, Nigiani, Cantini, al manifesto
artistico presentato da Pier Carlo Santini. L’anno
successivo Renzo Biasion lo segnala sul catalogo
d’arte Bolaffi.
In questi anni si susseguono importanti mostre in
Italia e in Francia.
Negli anni Novanta è a Tokio, Barcellona, Nizza,
Wolfsburg (Germania), Mantova, Rouen, Chaolon
(Francia), Lagenfeld. Poi partecipa a mostre a Milano,
Genova, Londra, New York, San Paolo in Brasile,
bipersonali insieme all’amico Paolo Staccioli.
Danilo Fusi was born in Scandicci (Fi) in 1940.
He has been in the circle of “young painters” active
in the historically famous Galleria Framings,
immediately taking the road of a sumptuous figuration.
His professional activity began in 1974. An elegant
and thoughtful painting. The page of Fusi, on the
perception of anachronism, the estrangement
of the everyday, through the introduction of the
incongruous element, “anticlassico” and “antigrazioso”.
The critics Pier Paolo Castellucci, Tommaso
Paloscia and Dino Pasquali baptized, since
the early seventies, the activity of the Florentine
artist, inaugurating the dense series of exhibitions
that will accompany him until today. In 1977 he had
already exhibited, as well as in Florence, also in La
Spezia, Bologna, Modena, Parma, Padua, Verona,
Naples and Rome, when he was invited to the
Premio del Fiorino, in Palazzo Strozzi in Florence.
Between 1978 and the beginning of the eighties,
then, which were those of “magical realism”, postmodernism
and citationism, the land became even
more fertile for the work of Fusi, which was shown
in personal and collective exhibitions, in Damascus
( Syria), Mantua, Palermo, Barcelona, Madrid,
Turin, Lucca. In 1979 he joined, with Del Testa, Nigiani,
Cantini, to the artistic manifesto presented
by Pier Carlo Santini. The following year Renzo
Biasion reports him on the Bolaffi’s art catalog.
In these years important exhibitions are taking
place in Italy and in France.
In the 1990s he was in Tokyo, Barcelona, Nice,
Wolfsburg (Germany), Mantua, Rouen, Chaolon
(France), Lagenfeld. Then he participates in exhibitions
in Milan, Genoa, London, New York, Sao
Paulo in Brazil, with great success with the public
and critics.
Since 2000, the exhibitions have become more
and more numerous, even with many bipersonal
exhibitions, together with his friend Paolo Staccioli.
In 2005 he is included in the Vittorio Sgarbi’s book
“I giudizi di Sgarbi. 99 artisti dai cataloghi d`arte
moderna e dintorni“.
Susan Leyland
Susan Leyland nasce nel 1952 in Inghilterra vicino
a Cambridge.
inizia a realizzare sculture.
Nello stesso anno
espone alla Galleria Villicana D’Annibale di Arezzo
nella bipersonale “Forme e Profumi Toscani” insieme
a Vincenzo Calli. Nella stessa galleria, l’anno
successivo, espone nella mostra “Camminando in
Toscana” insieme a Luigi Falai.
Francesca Sensi Art, e espone “Horse block
sculpture” a Palazzo Sansoni di Pontassieve (Fi).
Del 2015 la bi-personale (insieme a Marco Manzella)
alla Galleria Francesca Sensi Arte di Colle Val
D’Elsa (Si).
equina in bronzo per il First World War Memorial
all’Osborne Studio Gallery Belgravia, Londra.
Riccardo Luchini
Riccardo Luchini
stessa.
esistenziale”.
private in Italia e all’estero.
L’artista vive e lavora a Massarosa.
Riccardo Luchini was born in Milan in 1949.
At the age of 8 he returns to Massarosa (Lu), the
home town of his parents. He graduated from the
Liceo Scientifico of Viareggio (Lu) and began to
study medicine in Pisa and simultaneously painted,
but his passion for painting took over. So he
enrolled at the Art School of Lucca and then at
the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, painting section,
where he graduated in 1983, with honors.
Since 1969 he has participated in national reviews,
winning prizes and awards.
He was a lecturer at the Accademia di Brera in
Milan, at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, in
Carrara and in Urbino.
Exponent of that urban landscape that embodies
the spirit of our times. His cities, always caught
with moving cinematographic cuts, also constitute
an interesting metaphor of the human soul,
where the gray and the cold tones are dominant,
where solitude is the protagonist, where the instability
of things and the experience take place.
As Giuseppe Cordoni writes: “Even things, in order
to exist, require attention and love; otherwise
they end up dissolving, like the cities that disappear
from the look: which had never existed, if we
cease to contemplate them. Looking at the views
of Luchini is not facing out on a city, but inside, on
one’s own interiority “.
Nicola Micieli notes how the matter appears “a
dense and sedimentary dough, the color tends
to “monovalenza” (like one color), on a range of
low tones, dominating the browns and the burnt
lands, the steps from the shadow to the light are
not detectable in some way of pictorial areas, but
consist in variations intrinsic to the material, and
therefore the pictorial climate appears particularly
suitable to represent moments of intense existential
explication “.
“It is an autonomous painting — comments Tommaso
Paloscia— in a figurative language that
shuns the mimetic follies in which today’s figurative
art is involved”.
He has held exhibitions throughout Italy and
abroad and has participated in the most important
art fairs.
His works are present in public and private collections
in Italy and abroad.
Mario Madiai
Mario Madiai nasce a Siena nel 1944.
Ancora giovane si trasferisce a Livorno. Frequenta
Mario
Madiai utilizza i temi tradizionali del paesaggio o
della natura morta per approfondire un linguaggio
individuale.
italiana più apprezzato e riconosciuto dalla critica;
Mario Madiai was born in Siena in 1944.
Still young he moved to Livorno. He attended the
“Augusto Passaglia” Art Institute in Lucca and,
since he was very young, he dedicated himself to
painting and, with his precocious talent, he immediately
distinguished himself in the most qualified
national artistic events of the ‘60s and’ 70s.
Madiai is one of the most attentive and sensitive
artists to the issues of reality: the most astute criticism,
thanks to his extraordinary creative talents,
is one of the most prepared and accredited painters.
His works have as their main theme the nature,
the flowers, the landscape, with a technique that
focuses on the search for the balance of the composition,
achieved through the agreement of lines
and colors, almost like an abstract painting. Mario
Madiai uses the traditional themes of landscape
or still life to deepen an individual language. The
page of Madiai, sometimes clear and bright with
light, or cloaked in slight umbratility, represents
the same subject: the emotion of the look in front
of the images, or the memory of the images.
An extremely intense exhibition activity made up
of successes that have emerged since the first exhibitions
at the end of the Sixties and the first personal
exhibition at the Livorno House of Culture in
1971. While the character of Madiai’s painting was
maturing over time, the exhibitions increased.
Madiai is one of the most appreciated and recognized
names in Italian contemporary art; many
have dealt with his work. Martina Corgnati has edited
an important monograph.
He has participated in numerous exhibitions in
Italy and abroad, moving frequently between Europe,
Asia and the Americas.
His paintings have been included in the permanent
collection of the Museum of Modern Art
“Mario Grimoldi” of Cortina d’Ampezzo (Bl), in the
“Museo d’Arte dello Splendore” in the province of
Teramo and Il Ciocco in Barga (Lu) has a entire
room of his residence dedicated to the artist.
He lives in a charming farmhouse immersed in the
Pisan countryside but a few months per year, lives
and works in the United States.
Elisabetta Rogai, nata a Firenze, dipinge dall’età
in sé ogni prima e ogni dopo, ogni storia e
ogni quiete cercata, persa o conquistata.
a “Le salon des artistes” (Cannes, Francia), allestisce
tre personali, a Palazzo Borghese (Firenze),
all’Hotel Capri Palace (Capri, Napoli), poi al Palagio
all’estero, Stati Uniti, Hong Kong, Grecia, Lituania,
Venezuela e in Cina.
Sempre nel 2016 è all’Art Dynasty
fiorentina.
Elisabetta Rogai, born in Florence, paints from the
age of nine.
She began exhibiting in 1970, to publicly and constantly
re-appear in the art world in the early years
of the millennium. A pause that allowed her to
elaborate an expressive page in her lyrical values
and efficient in the robust structure. Portraits, figures,
nudes placed in a non-time, lying with their
thoughts on the tormented and vibrant funds, as
if their very presence welcomed in itself every before
and every after, every story and every quiet
sought, lost or conquered.
In 2001, the first personal exhibition at the Pharmaceutical
Perfume Shop in Santa Maria Novella
(Florence) followed by a series of events: in
Florence, Pietrasanta (Lu) and Lugano (Switzerland),
and participation in “Le salon des artistes”
“(Cannes, France), sets up three personal exhibitions,
at Palazzo Borghese (Florence), at the Capri
Palace Hotel (Capri, Napoli), then at the Palagio
di Parte Guelfa (Florence). Then the personal exhibition
“Reflections” at the Gran Caffé Quadri in
Piazza San Marco in Venice and at the Cloister of
Sant’Agostino di Pietrasanta.
In 2005 the City of Florence chose her as the representative
of the city for the 40th anniversary of
twinning with Kyoto (Japan), where she exhibited.
Then she is at Palazzo Crispi in Naples and at
the Galleria Schubert in Milan. She also exhibited
his works abroad, the United States, Hong Kong,
Greece, Lithuania, Venezuela and China.
Close to the traditional production, Rogai realizes the
fresco, like the one celebrated for the 70th anniversary
of the School of Aerial Warfare in Florence (2008).
In 2011 she launched EnoArte, the technique of
painting using wine, also realizing various live
performances of painting in public spaces and in
cellars of important italian wineries. In 2014 she
exhibited in Florence, in Palazzo Medici Riccardi,
with a personal “Molta follia suprema saggezza”.
In 2015 she painted the drapery of the Palio di Siena
and was awarded the title of “Academic” at
the Academy of Design Arts in Florence.
In 2016 for the first time an artist paints on the white
Carrara marble with wine at the Open Oven Gallery
of Pietrasanta. Also in 2016 she is at the Art Dynasty
Gallery in Forte dei Marmi, and at the Magazzini
del Sale of the Palazzo Comunale di Siena.
In 2018 Rogai receives, in Palazzo Vecchio in Florence,
the Caterina de’ Medici award for artistic merit.
The artist lives and works between Florence and
the Florentine countryside.

Carlo Romiti
Carlo Romiti è nato nel 1953 a Castelfiorentino
(Fi).
e Volterra.
Hannover, Sollingen, Heidelberg, Sassenberg), a
Londra, in Kazakhistan, nel Lussemburgo e a New
York.
Carlo Romiti was born in 1953 in Castelfiorentino
(Fi).
He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in
Florence.
Since 1987 he has directed the Theater Laboratory
of the Visual Arts Center of the Municipality
of Certaldo (Fi).
He collaborated with a research group on the expressive
activities of the Faculty of Magisterium
of the University of Florence for the realization of
educational texts. Has held courses on painting
techniques for the Didactic Section of the Uffizi
and at the Museum of Prehistory in Florence.
He leds a pictorial research on the chromaticity of
the lands where he lives, a peculiar feature of his
works. In fact, Romiti has been painting for years
with the lands that he himself is searching for.
Painting begins at the same moment when an embankment
is scraped and, with the hand, collects
the first handfuls of earth. The continuation of an
ancient technique of millennia and the continuous
research on color and its applications, are a
source of inspiration. Sometimes it is the earth itself,
with its different shades, to suggest the work,
in an alternation of priorities between subject and
color. The earth, ground by hand in stone mortars,
is mixed with water, egg or various glues, but
also with linseed oil. The use of this technique can
only find confirmation in the environment and in
the artist’s life choices: a measured isolation in the
countryside between San Gimignano and Volterra.
His horses, his dogs and in the nearby wood roe
and wild boar are, together with the landscape,
the favorite subjects and the means to find the
ancestral part that is in each of us.
Romiti has exhibited his works in numerous galleries
and public spaces, both in Italy and abroad,
both in personal and group exhibitions.
His first personal show in 1979 at the Galleria Orlandi
in Prato.
The international experience began in 1991 at the
Maison Visinand in Montreaux (Switzerland) and
in Geneva, then also in Germany (Berlin, Hannover,
Sollingen, Heidelberg, Sassenberg), in London, in
Kazakhstan, in Luxembourg and in New York.
In Italy he has exhibited in collective and personal
exhibitions throughout the Peninsula.
Romiti lives in a farmhouse in the countryside of
Gambassi Terme (Fi) where he has his studio.
dell’autore.
Armando Xhomo was born in Albania in 1965.
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tirana
(Albania) from 1985 to 1989.
He worked as a set designer in various theaters of
Albania and also had an important experience on
national Albanian TV.
Later he served as advertising graphic designer
from 1991 to 2000 at an important company.
At the end of theatrical experience, the painting
of Xhomo gets a special attention to the graphic
layout of his own works, full of a synthetic dynamism
that intersects with the anthropomorphic
figures in the foreground, which on the contrary,
instead, remind us of the most Mediterranean nature
and sanguine of the author.
During his career he has held several personal and
