Viktor Mislin & Gabriela Eberling Publisher’s note: The Malagasy population is currently assigned to the subspecies Kinixys belliana zombensis, but some authors accept it as a separate subspecies, Kinixys belliana domerguei. Fig. 7. Female. Photo: V. Mislin Notes from the Protocol of the Discussion Forum of the Kinixys Workshop 2006 Kinixys homeana The high-legged gait is ascribed less to the “frequent” wading in shallow water but rather as serving improved “offroad ability”. The outdoor keeping of this species at Frankfurt/Main Zoo mentioned in some literature actually refers to captive-bred specimens and has since been discontinued. One participant successfully propagated this species already before the Zoo did. Keepers varyingly described either the males or the females to be more susceptible to stress. Some keepers need to keep their males separated, while others do not. A diet largely based on animal protein must be advised against. It appears to cause persistent health problems and death. Kinixys homeana appears to be the most sensitive species of Kinixys. Terrarium populations must not be too dense. Frequent relocating should be avoided. Kinixys spekii This species is commonly described as very shy and susceptible to stress. Kinixys belliana Individual housing is recommended. The species is highly susceptible to stress. 32 RADIATA 16 (4), 2007
