Glyptemys insculpta and Terrapene carolina in South East NY The weather was hot throughout, and so we set out early for meeting with John Foley for a very special excursion in the South East of New York State. Air temperatures had risen to 36 °C by late morning and we were glad that we were first led into a forest. Wearing gumboots and mosquito repellent, we followed John who has been continuing the telemetry project originally initiated by Michael Musnick. Operating as a volunteer under permit by the authorities, Musnick had fitted nearly 100 turtles with transmitters over a period of thirteen years, funded through donations and from his own pocket. His research was focused mainly on Wood Turtles (Glyptemys insculpta) and a few Box Turtles (Terrapene carolina carolina). John is an animal caregiver by profession and works for a private trust that specialises in taking in unwanted, Fig. 14.
