Phyllis Tate The Lodger

Phyllis Tate The Lodger Full orchestra Opera Score and parts on hire 9780193383500 The Lodger is based on the novel of the same name by Marie Belloc Lowndes and tells the story of the Jack the Ripper murders of 1888, with the mysterious murderer’s landlady being the main character of the opera. We see ‘Jack’ as a psychopath - one moment kind and gentle, the next a maniac. Tate describes the opera as ‘bridging the opposed worlds of more advanced contemporary music and that of popular entertainment’. The libretto is by David Franklin, who was also a well-known soloist at the Royal Opera House and Glyndebourne. The work was commissioned by the Royal Academy of Music and, as such, is suitable for the capabilities of student performers. 150 minutes What D’ye Call It Ensemble Hire score and parts 9780193383869 What D’ye Call It is a one-act opera based on a tragi-comicpastoral farce written by John Gay in 1715, with the libretto for the opera written by V. C. Clinton-Baddeley. Wanting to write something completely different to The Lodger, Tate ‘felt that this play-within-a-play had possibilities as an opera-within-a-play and that it offered real scope for a vivid and imaginative production’. Commissioned by the 1966 Cheltenham Festival. 60 minutes The Lodger by Phyllis Tate. Photo credit: Heiko Sandelmann_Stadttheater Bremerhaven 98

The excellent libretto by Ronald Eyre is a potted version of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s lengthy poem ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’. The voices have singable, melodious lines, accompanied by chime bars and the tuned and untuned percussion usually found in a primary school, with additional optional instrumentation available for a Gala Performance. *Vocal score available to purchase from Banks Music Publications 25 minutes Twice in a Blue Moon Children’s choir and ensemble Hire chorus part 9780193383784 Hire score and parts 9780193383791 Vocal score* 9780193383777 An amusing school musical with libretto by Christopher Hassall, telling the story of John Crome’s painting, Mousehold Heath.
