Becky McGlade

Becky McGlade Choral Leaflet Secular Change upon change SA and piano Vocal score 9780193555372 Digital 9780193555389 Setting a text by Elizabeth Barratt Browning, this thoughtful and evocative piece compares a dying relationship with the changing of the seasons from summer to winter, which McGlade skilfully reflects in her use of minor tonality, falling melodic phrases, and shifting chromaticism. Reminiscent of the English art song, this setting for upper voices and piano demonstrates McGlade's compositional versatility. 3.5 minutes The Oak SATB and cello Vocal score 9780193555556 Digital 9780193555563 This simple setting of words by Tennyson reflects a different side to McGlade’s compositional style, without sacrificing any of her trademark characteristics. The largely homophonic vocal lines move as one, with clarity and poise in abundance, creating a bed of sound over which the cello gently glides. 2.5 minutes Choral Advent & Christmas A spotless Rose SATB (with divisions) unaccompanied Vocal score 9780193535695 Digital 9780193539631 This setting of A spotless Rose reflects the wintry starkness of the fifteenth-century text through its minor key and bare upper-voice opening, while the warmth of the full voicing on the words ‘light’ and ‘might’ represents the coming of the Christ-Child. 2.5 minutes O little town of Bethlehem SATB unaccompanied Vocal score 9780193562370 Digital 9780193562387 This imaginative setting of the well-loved text O little town of Bethleham, by Phillips Brooks, displays McGlade’s characteristic rich and expressive harmonies, with their jazz inflections. It would be a superb choice for Christmas services and concerts. 4 minutes See amid the winter’s snow SATB unaccompanied Vocal score 9780193551220 Digital 9780193551237 This setting of Edward Caswall’s well-known text shows all the hallmarks of McGlade's characteristic style, with changing time signatures, beguiling chromaticisms, and a beautiful, fluid melody. Changing metres give a sense of fluidity, while a scintillating climax on 'Peace on earth' forms the centre of the work. 4.5 minutes 64
