Larsen’s idea was to take a flight of fancy in each movement and create the musical equivalent of a character drawing. The movements ‘Glint’, ‘Glow’, and ‘Glide’ evoke particular aspects of this fantastical creature. The piece was commissioned for the inaugural concert of Monarch Brass. 11 minutes Firebrand Piccolo or flute, violin, cello, and piano Score and parts 9780193868465 Larsen states that she chose the instruments for Firebrand for their colour, combination, and agility. However, rather than a nonstop, wildly virtuosic affair that might be suggested from the title, it is in fact quite the opposite: the piece centres on the image of a flame moving outwards towards its turbulent and flickering edges. A refrain from June Carter Cash’s song ‘Ring of Fire’ is also interwoven throughout the piece, in homage to the famous songwriter who died whilst Larsen was composing the piece. 4 minutes Four on the floor Violin, cello, double bass, and piano Full score and set of parts 9780193861305 Hire score and parts on hire 9780193405103 In the 1940s and 50s, ‘four on the floor’ referred to a high performance car with a four-speed gearbox and a gear change mounted on the floor.
