Ontario With the summer behind us and with a somewhat stronger housing sector in Canada, businesses in the hardwood sectors prepared for the fall season and forecast planning to early winter. With the ongoing U.S.-China trade war, and the new tariffs imposed on certain the year. It was expected that the situation would not improve as new tariffs were imposed by China on U.S. exports for hardwood lumber logs and veneer. Species affected include Beech, Birch, Ash, Maple, Oak, among many others, which came into effect in September, and additional tariff increases expected in December following an announcement in late August. Ash demand is still strong for most regions, although the ravages of the Emerald Ash Borer to this stock is being felt across Ontario, the eastern provinces, and some U.S. states. This species has also been affected by the weak demand in export markets, especially to China. This has, as a result, had a downward pressure on prices. Supplies of Aspen are ample, but are not in overwhelming demand. Basswood continues With housing starts in Canada on the rise, it bodes well for hardwood producers as prefer- doing well due to an improved housing market. With the wet summer weather, Hard Maple production wasn’t at its peak due to poor logging conditions in some areas. The cabinet sector is leading the demand for this species, Soft Maple, on the other hand, is reported to be leading all species with regards to sales. It continues to be a strong dried inventories as well. Red Oak also continues to be in demand with sawmills processing on a regular basis to continue to supply demand. Demand for White Oak, noted contacts, is based on the grade in question. Certain grades are moving at a decent pace such as Green FAS and 1F and kiln-dried FAS. Demand for the upper grades are declining, noted some contacts. Business is reported as good for Poplar sales for both green and kilndried supplies, noted some contacts. According to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) the national trend in housing starts increased in July, which is the most current data at press time, despite a decrease in the level of Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rates (SARR) activity from June. High levels of activity in apartment and row starts in urban centres in recent months con- the total starts trend in July. The trend in housing starts was 208,970 units in July 2019, compared to 205,765 units in June 2019, said CMHC. The standalone monthly SAAR of housing starts for all areas in Canada was 222,013 units in July, down 9.6 percent from 245,455 units in June. The SAAR of urban starts decreased by 10.4 percent in July to 209,122 units. Multiple urban starts decreased by 12 percent to 162,722 units in July while single-detached urban starts decreased by 4.6 percent to 46,400 units. Rural starts were estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 12,891 units. The wet summer months slowed logging activity and limited green lumber production in many areas. Whitewood output was greater this summer than normal due to weaker demand for Red Oak and Ash. Some noted that the volume of these species of Whitewood had exceeded market demand. Sales of Hickory are remaining at stable levels, noted some area contacts. The secondary manufacturers’ demand is low for this species, yet remains consistent. Demand for this spe- Production is based more on immediate needs, they added. The regionally important species, Hard Maple, is selling well to the cabinet sector as the also maintaining a steady demand for this species. Again, Soft Maple is a best seller on domestic markets as it is widely used by furniture and wood components manufacturers. Demand for Oak is steady due to the improved housing sector in Canada. Flooring manufacturers started building their inventories in late summer for this species for fall and winter periods. Red Oak demand has decreased somewhat due to slow export sales to China. Contacts noted that demand for kiln-dried Number 2A Red Oak is slow in North sawmill production at this time, but not exceeding it.
