TRADE TALK CONTINUED

TRADE TALK CONTINUED ported a huge increase in yield with Cleereman’s new optimized edger and says the machine will pay for itself in yield saving alone. According to Jay Glime, you can stand by the chipper and just watch how much less waste he has going into it since he installed the optimized edger. Cleereman Industries displayed the edger at the Richmond Expo. “The reception of the new edger was incredible, and since the Expo we have taken orders on 13 edgers,” said Cleereman Vice President Paul Cleereman. “We offer the board edger line in both two and three saw models that can be 4” or 6” capacity with or without a gang side option. Our edgers can be manual with setworks or fully optimized. All edgers come with Cleereman Controls. This is different than some of the other edger manufacturers that use a different controls company to optimize their edger lines. Our customers can call one place for trouble shooting or parts and service for their Cleereman edger.” For more information, go to www.cleereman.com. MERCERSBURG, PA — Elk Forest Products, located in Mifflintown, PA, recently installed a custom Model 70E Log Flare Butt Reducer from Mellott Manufacturing, located here. The custom butt reducer was designed with dual kickers so the log can exit the machine on either side. Also, Mellott provided the support steel, heavy duty vibrating conveyor and a 60 horsepower hydraulic power source. The project also included modifications to the vibrating conveyor under the Nicholson ring debarker. The Mellott log butt flare reducer standard unit will handle 12” to 48” diameter logs with a maximum flare diameter of 60” and log lengths of 8 feet up to 17 feet. The Mellott cutterhead design is 14” diameter by 28” wide sectional steel with 48 reversible teeth and a 3-15/16” shaft. The cutterhead is driven by a 100 HP, 1200 RPM, electric motor direct-coupled to the drive shaft. The overhead hold-down wheels can be operated with hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders. As featured on the Mellott LMR Debarkers, the log butt flare reducer also has solid cast steel alloy bull-wheels with Browning HS1 hubs and bushings. The bull-wheel shafts are 3-7/16” diameter with split urethane lined pillow block bearings. The bullwheels are driven with a 10 HP Sumitomo helical bevel reducer. The machine has an automatic control system with the option of a wireless remote to be controlled by the loader operator. The log flare butt reducer is designed and built with the same rugged quality as the LMR Debarkers and as all the Mellott product lines. Adding a log flare butt reducer to a mill infeed system will vastly reduce log handling problems and improve productivity, according to Mellott Manufacturing. To learn more, go to www.mellottmfg.com. Memphis, TN — Roman Matyushchenko recently taught 11 students in the National Hardwood Lumber Association Inspector Training School Class No. 196, held here at the headquarters for the National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA). A native of Russia, he began in the Hardwood industry in 2007 and worked his way Roman Matyushchenko up to his current position at NHLA: instructor and associate dean of education. Matyushchenko has always enjoyed learning new languages. He began learning English when he was 12. Matyushchenko now speaks Russian, English and German fluently. He began his career in the Hardwood industry as a Quality Manager for AVA Company in Russia. He attended the NHLA Inspector Training School in Elkins, WV in 2008 and graduated as the top student in his class. NHLA hired Matyushchenko in 2013 as an International Inspector, which involved traveling in China, Vietnam, and Malaysia for lumber inspection and lumber grading workshops. In 2019, Matyushchenko moved to the U.S. to become the Associate Dean of the NHLA Inspector Training School. In the Fall of 2020, he also became the Instructor of the NHLA Inspector Training School. Matyushchenko says one of the reasons he enjoys his position as Instructor is the reward of seeing each student develop and grow as they learn the Hardwood grading skills, knowing this is their pathway to a solid career. These skills are crucial for success as a Hardwood Lumber Inspector, as well as working in the industry, in general, he said. Students often reach back out to Matyushchenko to touch base and let him know how well they are doing after graduation. Matyushchenko may be reached at r.matyushchenko@nhla.com or at 901-399-7569. n CLARK LUMBER COMPANY • 6 Sawmills producing 48,000,000’ of Appalachian Hardwoods 4/4 - 8/4 • 900,000’ drying capacity • 2,500,000’ kiln dried Lumber Inventory • Species: Red & White Oak, Hard & Soft Maple, Poplar, Ash, Cherry, Hickory, Walnut and Aromatic Red Cedar • Export prep & container loading • A team of over 130 employees manufacturing Appalachian Hardwoods Hugh Clark, President; Brandon Clark, Vice President; and Joseph Draper, Sales “From our Forest to your Facility” Brandon Clark bclark@clarklumbercompany.com Joseph Draper jdraper@clarklumbercompany.com Clark Lumber Company 552 Public Well Road Red Boiling Springs, TN 37150 Office: (615) 699-3497 www.clarklumbercompany.com 62 CHRISTMAS 2021 n NATIONAL HARDWOOD MAGAZINE CHRISTMAS 2021 n NATIONAL HARDWOOD MAGAZINE 63
