The first webinar, “LEED, FSC & the NWFA RPP,” was presented by Jason Grant, a consultant for more than two decades with the sustainable forest movement. Grant explored how the LEED rating system works and how it relates to wood products, progress with the Certified Wood Credit, and the major current and future trends in the broader development of the Materials and Resource Credit, FSC certification, and the NWFA RPP. The second webinar, “Indoor Air Quality and Wood Flooring,” presented by Jan Stensland, a leader with more than 20 years experience in green building, presented the basics of indoor air quality issues and how they relate to wood products, the latest CARB compliance and EPA regulations as they relate to wood, and help decipher the world of product certifications, especially those that relate to LEED projects. The third webinar, “Illegal Logging and Lacey Compliance,” presented by Anne Middleton, an Outreach Coordinator for the Forest Campaign at the Environmental Investigation Agency, defined illegal logging and its impact on the forest products industry, what the Lacey Act is and what it requires of wood products importers and their customers, and what the latest strategies, resources, and tools for managing risk and exercising “due care” are under Lacey. The NWFA has also recently redesigned and relaunched its consumer web site, www.woodfloors.org. The site features improved navigation, updated content, and numerous photos highlighting beautiful wood floors installed by NWFA members. OBITUARIES Bill F. Hanks Danbury, N.C.—Bill Frank Hanks, chairman of Bill Hanks Lumber Co. Inc., based here, died recently. He was 77. Hanks was born on April 26, 1933 in Galax, Va., to D. Frank and Elvanda Combs Hanks. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ann A. Hanks, brother Edward Hanks and sister Faye Vass. He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Susan Hanks, Oak Ridge, N.C.; daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and Michael Petty, Knoxville, Tenn.; Janet and Roger Callis, Winchester, Va.; grandchildren and spouses, Shelly Hanks, Daniel Hanks, Matthew and Anastasia Callis, Susan Tilley, Danny and Susan Callis; great-grandson, Isaac Callis; sister and brother-in-law, Katherine and Elbert Brannock. He was a member and lay leader of the Hernshaw United Methodist Church. Sheets worked in the Timber Industry for over 30 years. He worked for many years for Buck Harless who use to own Gilco Lumber Inc., that was located in South Charleston, W. Va. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Sheets; grandmother, Nannie Bailey; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Mitchell. He is survived by his wife, Marsha Sheets of Marmet; mother, Addalee Sheets of Sabine; sister, Nelda (James) Baugh of Sabine; father-in-law, Kenneth Mitchell Sr. of Hernshaw; special nephew, Shawn Sheets of Sabine; special cousin, Terry Bailey of Stickney; sisters and brothers-inlaw, Pam and Richard Burkhart of Hernshaw, Doug and Virginia Snodgrass of Elkhart, Indiana, David and Teresa Snodgrass of Standard and Dana and Lisa Snodgrass of Chesapeake; nieces and nephews, Janell, Jeremy, Joy, Jason, Jeffrey, Jodie; great nieces and nephews, Hailey, Jake, Hallie, Noah, Jonah, Wyatt, Jadyn; many aunts and uncles, family and friends. A native of Pikeville, he was a son of the late Herbert and Carrie Elswick Stratton. He was a graduate of Betsy Layne High School and the University Of Kentucky School Of Forestry. He was formerly the manager and vice president of the National Lumber Company in Glasgow with 42 years of service. He was a member of the National Hardwood Lumber Association, the Kentucky Forest Industries Association, and the Glasgow Baptist Church. Employed with National Lumber for 41 years, he was vice president of SilvaCor Inc., and an active member of National Hardwood Lumber Association. He retired May 2010, and his son Kevin Stratton became vicepresident. Kevin worked with his father for almost 20 years at National Lumber. Survivors include his wife, Dinah; two sons, Kevin Stratton and wife, Renee’, of Glasgow, and Greg Stratton of Lexington; three grandchildren, Nicole Pedigo and husband, O’Brian, of Russellville, Ashley Stratton and Daniel Grant Stratton of Glasgow; one brother, Jerry Stratton of Wishrim, Wash.; one sister, Joyce Spears of Prestonsburg.
