TS Manufacturing: Known

TS Manufacturing: Known The World Over For Quality Sawmill Equipment TS Manufacturing may be a name you are not familiar with, but for over 45 years, they have been providing innovative solutions for Sawmills and Planing mills worldwide. Established in the early 70’s to primarily serve the Ontario Northern Softwood industry’s growing need for a turnkey supply, manufacture and installation company at the time, this family business still offers that turnkey capability, albeit with a much larger product and geography range. From the initial offering of log handling and lumber handling to the Softwood Sawmill, Board plant and Pulp mill industries, to their current repertoire of complete Sawmill, and Planing Mill Systems, this family has grown along with their product line. “When we started, my brother and I would spend weeks installing equipment in the Softwood mills up north, with one of us doing drawings on the drafting board, and even the proverbial napkin, now we have a department of over 17 Engineering staff, 3D Design, and a shop complete with CNC Machining and Fabrication equipment, while the napkins are properly left in the lunchroom,” says Ted Smith, Founder and President about the dramatic changes from their fl edgling beginnings to their current status as one of the premier providers of solutions to the wood industry. As typical, these changes did not come overnight, but progressively with the addition of new product offerings. “Most of the time, our product line grew naturally out of necessity. We started making stackers in the 80’s because a supplier reneged on a deal we had provided to a customer, so we built the stacker to make it right, and now we make some of the most diverse offerings of advanced stackers in the market.” This natural expansion of product offerings has led to one of the most diverse product ranges for a mid-size manufacturer, with supply of Log Handling, Merchandising, Sharp Chains, Profi ling Log Breakdown C-Frames, High Speed Bandmills, Optimized Edgers and Gangs, Resaws, Lumber Handling, Trimming, Sorting, Stacking and Stick Placing, as well as high Speed Tilt Hoists and Planer Mill Systems. More recently, TS Manufacturing has released a highspeed lug loader to go along with its Trimmer and Sorter systems. “Our customer wanted a simpler lug loader than a tong dog system, and needed to be able to do a wide range of widths, so conventional cam lug loaders wouldn’t work,” says Riley Smith, Sales Manager. “We looked at the limitations of both the tong dog and ‘cam type’ lug loaders that were on the market, and designed a system that can handle boards from 3” to 20” wide in a variety of thicknesses.” The lug loader was designed for fi ll speeds exceeding 240 lugs per minute on 2” thick boards. Designed to be totally electric, it can be calibrated in nearly all aspects to suit the specifi c lumber it is loading, and most importantly for Sawmill applications, it can handle mixed lengths and thicknesses with its unique split lift system. Another popular catchphrase these days is ‘profi ling’, with the recent displays in Atlanta, profi ling was on display and on the mind of many visitors. While TS didn’t have a profi ler on display in Atlanta, they did have one running in Pennsylvania and on video. This unique project came from the customer’s need to add a small log breakdown line, but not burden their existing gang and board edger. “Our customers needed to efficiently process the smaller logs they were getting that just didn’t make sense on their carriage, however, conventionally doing so would cause their edger to bottleneck the sawmill. We happily worked with them to put profiling on the new Twin breakdown line offering profiling to a lower production point in the industry,” offers Dustin Smith, Engineering Manager. The Optimized Edger Feed System pictured here can process over 40 BPM. Regionally, they have expanded as well, from focusing on the ‘Northern Ontario and Quebec’ Softwood facilities in the 70’s, they began to pursue customers in other regions, including exporting to South America, Africa, and Russia in the 80’s and 90’s, to Asia and Australia in the 00’s and later. Today they have equipment on every forested continent worldwide: with Bandmill Systems in Australia, and Edgers, Trimmers and Sorters in New Zealand, to log handling in Japan, stackers in Russia, or Softwood mills in Guyana and Chile. Some of their best clients, however, are in the Southeastern USA, many processing Southern Yellow Pine. Whether it’s the Planer Mill retrofi t in Virginia, the Gang in Maryland, or the Trimmers in Georgia, North Carolina, and Alabama; or the Stacker and Stick Placer Systems in Georgia and North Carolina; they have more than just experience in the SPF market, having been working in the south since the early 90’s. With a focus on customer needs and support, TS Manufacturing will continue to provide the market with reliable, dependable equipment whether it be for logs or lumber. TS Manufacturing has a detailed website, international salesmen, and dozens of videos on its YouTube Channel for more information. For your next project, they welcome the opportunity to get to know you and your business’s challenges in more detail. More information is available at www.tsman. com.
