We look forward to working with you. PPG has application experts in the field with decades of coatings experience in the lumber and prefinish markets. As manufacturing costs continue to rise across industries, companies are taking a hard look at ways to protect their bottom lines. Most managers of lumber companies that paint, focus on the cost of the paint itself, without considering the actual painting process, which can be a big area potential savings. Finding ways to reduce waste on a paint line is not often difficult, but it does require diligence and continual follow-up. Here are some important things to consider: •Measure Paint Films – Too often, paint films are not measured, or they are measured inaccurately by running a metal panel along with production parts. An easy method to measure paint thickness on wood and composite material is to utilize a calibrated portable digital microscope. While taking a reading will require sacrificing a part multiple times daily, the data is key to keeping paint costs low. PPG has written procedures on how to measure paint films on wood and composites with a microscope that is available upon request. •Inspect Your Paint Guns – Paint guns are often running with worn tips, wrong tips or with plug- Five Tips to Reduce Paint Line Costs ged air holes. Worn tips alone can cost hundreds of dollars per day in paint waste. When the orifice increases due to wear, the fan width increases, which can lead to more passes and paint needed to cover the same area. Fan pattern checks and gun tips should be inspected each shift. •Know Your Flow – The fluid flow of paint guns should be spraying the same volume of paint. Inconsistent flow calibration can lead to poor paint quality like drips and striping, and potentially higher costs from defects, which can lead to more warranty claims. The good news is that fluid flows can easily be measured. Measuring fluid flows daily will lead to more application consistency, as well as improved paint booth cleanliness and reduced downtime. •Oven Temperatures – Many times oven temperatures are too high or adjustments are not made during seasonal changes. A reduction of just five to ten degrees can result in energy savings. If possible, run an oven tracker through the oven to ensure parts are only seeing temperatures within the bake window. Over or under curing causes many quality issues, so optimizing temperature is vital for both quality and cost control. •Evaluate Filtration – Inspect and ensure that the recommended filter sizes are being used at the pump and paint gun. Often, the wrong filter sizes are utilized, leading to costly downtime. A larger size (tighter) mesh filter in conjunction with too small of a tip size leads to gun clogging at the gun or pump filter. A smaller size (loose) mesh with too big of a tip size can lead to defects and/or paint flow restriction from inadequate filtering. Regardless of whether your organization uses spray application, roll, brush, curtain coating or another method of painting, it’s very likely that there are focus areas to drive cost savings. Every paint line is unique so PPG offers a dedicated product line of primers, sealants, topcoats and stains that are engineered specifically for the building products and prefinished lumber industries. taking the time to understand cost saving opportunities and adapting systems for optimization and efficiency is key to success and a better bottom line.
