Similar to the way landscaping or sod can take years to lose their newly-planted appearance, homes outfitted with Cedar shingles coated with MachineCoat Waterborne Weathering Stain can appear settled within months, as though they have been part of their environment for much longer. MachineCoat Waterborne Weathering Stain made its debut this past fall with availability from multiple suppliers. “We have a deep knowledge of the pre-stain, pre-prime and pre-finishing segments of the building products industry.” Continuing a trend that proved very successful last year, PPG recently announced “Night Watch” as its Color of the Year for 2019. Dee Schlotter, PPG senior color marketing manager, described the shade as, “Bringing the healing power from the outdoors into your home through color. Night Watch’s dark green hue pulls our memories of natural environments to the surface to create the calming, invigorating euphoria we feel when in nature.” Night Watch carries the fitting tagline “Bringing the outside in.” PPG is also announcing “Aspen Tan” as the Stain Color of the Year. “Aspen Tan is contemporary, warm and provides a timeless appeal. This fresh stain color is perfect for modern builds and more classic looks,” said Schlotter. The PPG family of brands strives to lift colors off surfaces all around A feature wall with Aspen Tan stain brings warmth to this outdoor environment. you and bring attention to the transformation that can take place by welcoming new hues into your environment. Jeffers said, “Customers can continue to count on our innovation as we are excited to launch new products in 2019. AWC- Continued from page 2 opment to those with employment challenges in the Baltimore area. As one of its goals, Second Chance has a clear aim to prepare these employees for reintroduction into the workforce, well-trained for better-paying construction jobs. In seeking a volunteer opportunity for staff as a way to give back to our community, AWC looked to align with a group that shared our industry’s interest in and mission of ensuring a resilient, safe, and sustainable built environment. Through our search we found Second Chance. AWC was impressed by their overall commitment to Baltimore, an impoverished nearby urban area with many abandoned buildings. After touring their facility and seeing the volume of wood they recover, we knew it was an organization we wanted to support. Second Chance has a focus on what it calls its triple bottom line, using environmentally sound, socially responsible and financially viable practices to create living-wage “green collar jobs” through teaching construction through deconstruction of buildings that would otherwise be demolished and dumped in a landfill. The deconstruction process takes apart a building in reverse order of construction and involves the skillful removal of valuable building materials. There are multiple benefits to deconstruction including, social, environmental and financial. During our day with Second Chance, AWC’s 14 staff volunteers chose between assisting in the deconstruction of a building in northern Virginia or helping at the Baltimore warehouse. Volunteers at the deconstruction site spent the day carefully harvesting hardwood flooring, salvaging approximately 1,000 square feet that can be reused. Volunteers in the warehouse worked on de-nailing recovered building products along with processing and sorting materials for resale. The North American wood products industry is committed to sustainability in its products and their use, and sustainability has long been one of the core pillars of AWC’s mission and the industry’s social license. In support of this commitment, the industry developed the first third-party verified Environmental Product Declarations and Transparency Briefs that describe the environmental performance of many of the products we produce. Another example of how AWC is committed to a resilient, safe, and sustainable built environment is our partnership with the Canadian Wood Council and Building Materials Reuse Association in sponsoring www.reusewood.org, an online North American directory outlining reuse and recycling options for wood products. Historically, there has been a lack of awareness of the opportunities to re- cycle and reuse wood products, and thereby extend their useful life and contribute to a circular economy. AWC is aiming to change that, and our industry wants to do its part when it comes to the full life-cycle impact of our products. The online directory helps educate builders, designers and consumers on the many opportunities to salvage, recycle or reuse wood products, which will in turn reduce waste. We are honored and privileged to serve such an important mission, and we’re thankful to Second Chance and its employees for teaching our volunteers and welcoming us into their space. AWC will continue to look for organizations to partner with who align with our objectives, while also contributing to the appropriate and responsible manufacturing and use of wood products. n Robert Glowinski is the President and CEO of the American Wood Council, which represents the interests of the North American wood products industry that provides approximately 450,000 men and women in the United States with family-wage jobs. On behalf of the industry it represents, AWC is committed to ensuring a resilient, safe, and sustainable built environment.
