Even Projects of

Even Projects of Biblical Proportion Aren’t Too Large for Shelton Lam & Deck Chehalis, WA–Shelton Lam & Deck, headquartered here, is a premier manufacturer of Lock- Deck laminated decking and has been for 26 years. In that time, valuable partnerships with lumber suppliers have been forged, in addition to an exclusive distribution relationship with Disdero Lumber Co., based in Clackamas, OR. As the exclusive distributor of Lock-Deck for Shelton, Disdero Lumber markets the company’s products into a variety of uses. Lock-Deck is often purposed for the construction of large building environments, including educational forums, airports, churches and the like. Nearly 1 million feet of the laminated material was needed to complete construction of the realisticallysized reproduction of Noah’s Ark for Ark Encounter. There, the attributes of Lock-Deck, manufactured from a variety of solid woods, can be admired not only by builders, who recognize its easy-to-install properties, but also the public consumer. Paul Ericson, son of Shelton Lam & Deck founder Steve Ericson, co-owns Shelton Lam & Deck with his father. The distribution partnership with Disdero Lumber was the brainchild of John Jayne of Disdero Lumber and Steve, who both saw the demand for laminated decking going un-served after Potlatch Corp., ceased the production of Lock-Deck material. While Lock-Deck is routinely used in the applications mentioned previously, once in a while a special project will arise that requires all hands on deck. For instance, when the 0 million Ark Encounter was under construction in Williamstown, KY, contractors in charge of the build came to Disdero with one of the largest orders ever placed for Lock-Deck. Nearly 1 million feet of the laminated material was needed to complete construction of the realisticallysized reproduction of Noah’s Ark for Ark Encounter, which is built using specifications from the Bible. All of the ceilings and floors at the Ark Encounter are made from Lock-Deck. Spanning 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high, few companies could have provided the necessary material needed. Shelton Lam & Deck was up for the job, though. More information can be found at www.disdero.com. Page 10 Softwood Forest Products Buyer n July/August 2019

Senators from Oregon and Idaho Team Up For Federal Endowment Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon, with co-sponsors Jim Risch and Mike Crapo, Republican senators from Idaho, introduced legislation that would create a federal endowment to compensate for the shrinking revenue experienced in rural communities due to reductions in timber harvesting on federal lands. The Forest Management for Rural Stability Act is a bill to amend title 36 in the United States Code and will grant a federal charter to the Forest and Refuge County Foundation to provide for the establishment of the Natural Resources Permanent Fund and other purposes. At presstime the bill had been read twice and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. Forest Service Chief Applauds Momentum of Mass Timber Market At Recent University of Idaho Groundbreaking USDA Forest Service Chief Vicki Christiansen recently joined with staff of the University of Idaho to break ground on a one-of-a-kind engineered wood arena. The 62,000-square-foot, 4,200-capacity facility will highlight Idaho’s wood products industry and will provide a unique home for the University of Idaho’s basketball programs. This project is an example of how modern technology and traditional wood use can be combined to bring benefits to emerging new markets while supporting strong forest health, as well as contributing to local energy production. “This ground breaking comes at an exciting moment for the mass timber market in the United States,” said Chief Christiansen. “A thriving mass timber market can help reduce excess vegetation in our overstocked forests, leading to safer, more resilient communities. It can also support rural economic development and provide an opportunity for the Forest Service to contribute to a more sustainable building sector.” The Forest Service supports the market for mass timber through the work of its Wood Innovations Program. Mass timber is a term that describes a group of wood products that are formed by mechanically fastening or bonding with adhesive smaller wood components (such as dimensional lumber) to form large pre-fabricated wood Washington Scene elements used as beams, columns, walls, floors and roofs in buildings. Examples of these products are cross-laminated timber, naillaminated timber, glue laminated timber, mass plywood, and many others. Builders Call on Congress to Address Housing Affordability Challenges The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) recently celebrated National Homeownership Month with a message to Congress urging their action to address America’s housing affordability challenges. “Removing regulatory barriers that contribute to the increased costs of housing will pave the way to homeownership,” said NAHB Chairman Greg Ugalde, a builder and developer from Torrington, CT. “Home builders and the residential construction community are committed to working with Congress to ensure homeownership is within reach of hard working families.” LOCK-DECK For more information visit LockDeck.com or contact Gunnar Brinck at Disdero Lumber at GBrinck@disdero.com Continued on page 35 Lock-Deck combines the timeless beauty, strength and durability of wood in a structurally engineered product.
