KIRKWOOD STAIR & MILLWORK - Continued from page 5 Kirkwood Stair & Millwork produces custom millwork products from its facility in Kirkwood, MO. Pictured here is a view of the Big Cedar Lodge’s entry and grand staircase, crafted by Kirkwood Stair & Millwork. The Big Cedar Lodge in Ridgedale, MO, is an example of the breadth of products Kirkwood Stair & Millwork produces, including stairs and custom millwork. Berger purchased Kirkwood Stair in 1994 and expanded its offerings to include custom and architectural millwork and doors. In 2005, the company opened its Kirkwood Home Gallery in Brentwood and began selling Kolbe and Sierra Pacific windows. Its window specialists have a combined 200 years of experience, so perhaps it’s no surprise that the company was named Kolbe’s “Dealer of the Year” in 2016. Chris Frentzel, his business partner at The Home Gallery, is well respected in the architectural and designer community for his expertise in windows and doors. Berger said. The company has also added solid wood countertops to its repertoire. The eco-friendly countertops are hand sanded, then protected and finished with Waterlox® tung oil to create a lustrous and food-prep safe surface. “Wood is much cleaner than granite as far as not absorbing bacteria,” Berger noted. “It’s also easy to maintain and clean.” The Kirkwood Stair & Millwork website offers a robust estimating system for its wood countertops. It also offers a very user friendly, interactive, electronic mouldings catalog that users can download profiles from Kirkwood Stair, as can architects that may require CAD drawings. Kirkwood Stair sells mainly to highend builders and remodelers, “along with folks who want to do a custom renovation to their staircase,” Berger said. The cost of such renovations can start at ,000 and go up to 0,000 for a commercial project. One of the commercial projects of which Berger is most proud is the creation and installation of a massive staircase at Big Cedar Lodge in Branson, MO. The contractor’s plans called for steel and concrete stairs covered with a wood veneer, and the job was running over budget when he called Kirkwood Stair in 2013. Berger and his team of production engineers conferred with the contractor and proposed an alternative material that had not been considered by the client previously. “Wood was nearly half the price of the steel and concrete and, frankly, double that in beauty,” Berger said. In less than two months, the Kirkwood Stair team built and assembled the staircase at its 40,000-square-foot Pacific facility, then trucked it to Big Cedar Lodge and installed it via crane. The Big Cedar staircase was a special case, taking 12 men to load it onto a truck. For most other projects, the company uses proactive, custom-designed customer service programs that track and log construction schedules to accurately pinpoint manufacturing, delivery and installation requirements, thus alleviating delays and backlogs in the construction schedules. “This virtually eliminates any missed closings that would revolve around our work,” Berger said. A full-time company programmer constantly creates and reworks the software systems to ensure optimal performance. LEFT: A view of some of the company’s custom ceiling inlays is shown here.
