Lewis Award Recipient John Murphy has been named the 2023 Bronson J. Lewis honoree. Now in its 18th year, the Bronson Lewis Award recognizes individuals for their leadership and outstanding contributions to the engineered wood industry. Murphy was presented with the award at the APA Annual Meeting in Palm Desert, California. The meeting took place Oct. 14-17, 2023. The award is named in honor of the late Bronson Lewis, who served 24 years as secretary and then executive vice president of APA – The Engineered Wood Association. Having served the industry for over 50 years, Murphy’s dedication and contributions are well-respected. He is the third generation to lead the Murphy Company as current president and CEO. Born in Portland, Oregon, Murphy moved to Florence, Oregon, in 1973 to help operate the Murphy Company’s Cushman, Swisshome and Myrtle Point veneer mills. Just a few years later, in the early 1980s, he operated his first plywood mill Continued on page 44 The world is catching on quickly to the fact that the built environment is a major contributor to greenhouse Jackson Morrill gas emissions, and there are some significant initiatives that have recently launched that will be critical in defining what policies and approaches are taken to reduce those emissions. At Climate Week NYC last month, AWC attended a CEO Dialogue on Built Environment Transformation hosted by the World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD). At that event, the French Government announced plans for a first ever “Ministerial Forum on Buildings and Climate,” to be held March 7-8, 2024, in Paris. This event will bring together stakeholders from “governments, business, finance and civil society organizations, around a joint commitment and call to action to decarbonize the building sector and make it more resilient.” At an all-day workshop attended by AWC and hosted by WBCSD the following day, we learned of another initiative, entitled “Built Environment Market Trans- A Great Year for NAWLA By The NAWLA Editor Continued on page 43 It’s hard to believe that 2023 is already coming to an end but with 2024 fast approaching, we’d like to take a few moments to reflect on this past year and all the success NAWLA has had. 2023 Highlights Traders Market The industry event of the fall, the 2023 Traders Market is gearing up to be another successful event for NAWLA.
