Modern life is unimaginable without
electricity. The electricity considerably
determines the standards of living, creates
the conditions for further progress.
Unfortunately, until now it is impossible to
avoid the disturbances of the electricity
supply, sometimes even large ones. It is
until now impossible to ensure the continuous
supply of the electricity to all consumers,
but this goal is being striven for.
In the article the most notable accidents
of the interruption of the electricity
supply and their consequences are
analyzed. The are discussed the peculiarities
of Lithuanian energy supply and
ways of avoiding possible accidents.
It is more and more often spoken about
the disastrous climate change and, as
it is supposed, the increase of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere that speeds
up this change. One the most prominent
scientists, an astrophysicist living
in England Stephen Hawking, wishing to
attract the attention of the world‘s powerful
ones, has evaluated the climate change
as much more dangerous than the international
terrorism. The European Electric
Energy Industry Union EURELECTRIC,
concerned about the prospects of the
EU energetics, has begun in 2005 to create
the European energetics strategy, - it
has performed the study „ The role of
electric energetics - the new outlook to
energetics that is safe, competitive, and
diminishing the emissions of CO2“. This
study is analyzed in detail in the article.
It is begun actively to build and exploit
the power stations, producing the electricity
from renewable sources (wind,
sun and geothermic energy, water and
biomass) during the last years in the Europe,
as well as in Lithuania. In Lithuania
the most favourable conditions are for
the development of the systems that
use wind and water energy. After the
entering into the EU, Lithuania took an
obligation to perform the requirements
of the directive 2001/77/EC, according
to that, 7 per cent of the electric energy,
generated in Lithuania must be produced
from alternative energy sources until
2010. It is planned that, until 2010, the
capacity of wind power stations would
reach almost 200 MW. The capacity of the
wind power stations that are produced
and built now is about 1 MW, and the
capacity of their complexes (parks) is
larger than 10 MW. In the article there
are presented the technical decisions
how to protect the wind power stations
from lightning and excess voltages.
