FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT IN LITHUANIA
The bulk of investment in Vilnius county was made by the investors from Sweden
(LTL 4 803.1 million, or 22 per cent of the total FDI), Germany (LTL 2 414.8 million, or
11 per cent), Estonia (LTL 2 012.3 million, or 9 per cent), Latvia (LTL 1 721.7 million, or
8 per cent), Denmark (LTL 1 702.1 million 702.1 million, or 8 per cent) and the
Netherlands (LTL 1670.6 million, or 8 per cent).
In Vilnius county, as of 1 January 2009, the bulk of investment was made in real
estate, renting and other business activities (LTL 4 690.8 million, or 22 per cent of the
total FDI), financial intermediation (LTL 4 657.9 million, or 21 per cent), post and
communication (LTL 3 970.9 million, or 18 per cent), wholesale and retail trade
(LTL 3 064.7 million, or 14 per cent) and electricity, gas and water supply
(LTL 2 222.9 million, or 10 per cent). Enterprises engaging in the said economic
activities are concentrated in Vilnius city municipality; in the rest of municipalities, the
bulk of FDI falls within manufacturing enterprises.
In manufacturing (LTL 1 361.2 million), the bulk of the FDI was made in the
manufacture of chemicals – LTL 261.7 million (19 per cent of the total FDI in
manufacturing), paper and paper products, publishing, printing and reproduction of
recorded media – LTL 210.9 million (15 per cent), and mineral products –
LTL 196.1 million (14 per cent).
