Das Hochmoor „De Groote Peel“ hat eine Fläche von 1500 Hektar.
Sein Name geht vermutlich auf die lateinische Bezeichnung Locus
paludosus zurück, die „sumpfiges Gebiet“ bedeutet. Der Großteil
des Moores wurde im Laufe der Jahrhunderte zur Gewinnung von
Torf abgegraben. In der vielfältigen Landschaft wechseln sich
Wasser, Sumpf, Heide und kleine Waldgebiete ab. Hunderte Vogelarten
nutzen das Gebiet jedes Jahr als Brutplatz oder zum Rasten
und Überwintern. Seit 1993 ist „De Grote Peel“ Nationalpark.
The high moor bog known as “De Groote Peel“ comprises an area
of 3700 acres. Its name likely goes back to the Latin Locus paludosus,
meaning “marshy area“. Over the centuries, the largest
part of the bog has been dug out for obtaining turf. In this varied
landscape water, marsh, heath and small forests alternate. Hundreds
of species of birds use this area as their annual breeding ground
or as a resting and wintering place. The National Park “De Grote
Peel” was established in 1993.
La tourbière « De Groote Peel » occupe une surface de 1500
hectares. Son nom vient certainement de l’expression latine Locus
paludosus qui signifie « région marécageuse ». La grande partie
du marais a été utilisée au cours des siècles pour extraire de la
tourbe. Eau, marais, bruyères et petites forêts se relayent dans ce
paysage aux multiples facettes. Des centaines d’espèces d’oiseaux
utilisent chaque année cette région pour faire leur nid ou se reposer
et hiverner. « De Groote Peel » est un parc national depuis 1993.
